Just switched over from the Hockey game in time to see Bregman steal second. One out in the first, Reddick batting.
-
That ball trailing away from the CFer was a thing of beauty.
-
Josh triples to LCF, Mallex Smith is a nightmare in the field. Astros lead 1 - 0.
-
Contact play, 2-0.
-
Chirinos!!!
3-0 Astros
-
This start is fine.

Not subtle!

Chirinos hit the shit out of that ball.

Listening via radio tonight and the homer by Chirinos sounded like an explosion off his bat!

Astros really need a good start tonight from Martin. He hasn’t really looked good since his debut. There is still some pop in that lineup but hopefully the Mariners are just the team he needs to see right now. Fingers crossed!

That is one fast outfield out there tonight.
-
Mallex Smith is really fast but can't hit, can't field, and has a noodle for an arm.

Who wins between White and Vogelbach in a sumo wrestling match?

But he wears a sweet necklace.

For Fuck's Sake, THROW STRIKES!

Vogelbach is a tree trunk in cleats.

The Blues score to go ahead of the Bruins 3-2 with 8:40 to go in the third period!

Wait, “the shift” has a fucking sponsor?

30 pitches when we need him to throw strikes and get deep into this game! You have a 3-0 lead. Quit walking sub .250 hitters.
-
30 pitches but at least no score.
-
Jake...takes one right in the but-tocks.
-
Hey, nobody slaps Jake's ass but us!
-
It’s got to be odd for a starting pitcher to come in down three.
-

They called that a million dollar HBP but Jake never saw a dollar of that.

The Bruins pull their goalie at the 2 minute mark and give up an empty netter with 1:43 left to go down 4-2. Looks like the Blues are about to even the series. with :24 left.

And now another HR from a guy who can hit.

Equally you can leave fat pitches down the middle to great hitters.
I'm officially fed up with Corbin Martin.

Is getting to 3 ball counts and then pumping the ball right down the middle not part of the game plan?

So, assuming Corbin gets sent down, which I'm ok with, what's the roster move?
Move Rodgers into the rotation? Valdez? James?

I'd go with James.

I'd go with James but if they want to continue grooming him for potential late inning work later this season then I'd be fine with Rodgers

And now the Astros getting shut down by a guy with a 6.99 ERA.
Christ.

And Corbin can drive White when he goes back.
These guys are making Leblanc look good.

That’s not a ground rule double, Kalas, it’s spectator interference. He can kinda be a dumbass sometimes.

He nailed that guy's hoodie description, though!

"Oh no. I'm a fan and I just fielded a fair ball. I'll just sit back down wearing my pink hoodie covered with roses, right next to this 300 pound man. Just blend right in."

How the fuck is Haniger hitting only .226?

Nice job by Framber to pitch around the shift and numbnuts it the stands.

Sparks and Ford briefly speculated that it could be Valdez who gets the spot, especially if he were to pitch well tonight. Noted that there was no one in AAA ready.
Just my opinion, but no way I’d put Rodgers in rotation.

You may have noticed I did not mention bringing anyone from AAA up for the rotation. I'm thinking Framber will get the start, but he really does seem to like baserunners.

It was Noe in Austin. So yeah. Not people, but a person, but I did spend more time reading his well written post than other people’s posts so it became “people”.

He really needs Several days off, and then a stretch where he only pitches every other day or so. I was hoping that Seattle would break the string of nail-biters, but we may not be that lucky.

I doubt he needs several days, but he certainly will be unavailable tonight. Harris, Rondon, James, and Osuna got last night off. Framber was the pitcher we hope he will be. I hope he has discovered something.

I get the impression that he doesn't keep score. He makes lots of mistakes.
Which is one of the reasons I pretty much exclusively listen to the radio guys. Robert Ford is constantly off on pitch location, but otherwise those guys are a joy to listen to.

Ford and Sparks are ok and certainly better than the last two bozos, but I like Kalas and Blum.

I'm pretty sure Kalas keeps score. I believe he was showing his card when that did that feature on scorekeeping a couple of years ago and the crew showed how they did it. Well, at least he kept it that day. Has there ever been a baseball broadcaster that didn't keep score? Not counting Harry Carey that often didn't know the score late in his career.
-
TV broadcasting is much different than radio. They can have lengthy conversations and tell stories because the audience is watching and does not need to hear about every pitch. Radio broadcasters assume their listeners are not watching, and the play by play guy must stay on each pitch. There is very little time for extended discussions unless they are willing to have them interrupted for each pitch. I think both Astros broadcast crews perform their jobs well.

Rerun of last year - James and Valdez coming through in the clutch.

I like all of our guys, and Julia.
Having said that Jim, I think it was your broadcast partner in RR, whose names escapes me as I type this, that did a couple of games for tv back in spring training. I REALLY liked him and I think his talent is being wasted in AAA.

Yep, it was Capps. Old brain just wouldn’t work. I loved his delivery during those spring games. If there was ever a change on the Astros’ tv or radio crew, he’s the first one I’m calling.

Really like Ford and Sparks - low key, matter of fact, strong, timely analysis.
Neutral on Kalas and Blum but they have been growing on me lately. They are personally enjoying the contributions of the second stringers and it shows through and elevates the broadcast. Don't like Morales - she is annoying and detracts from the game. However her interviews with the Mayfield and Stubbs families were great.

You can go jump in the lake. Julia Morales is great.

I like Kalas and Blum just fine. Kalas taunts the BBGs, but he's said he doesn't care, so it is what it is. He makes mistakes, everyone does. But then there are times when he doesn't seem to know the rule, or the situation, and I just find it annoying. Last night was a good example. Spectator interference is not a ground rule double. One, it has nothing to do with the ground rules of T-Mobile Park, and two, it's not an automatic double. The latter half is important because when the spectator grabbed the ball, Reddick was not far away, and was coming up to make a play on the ball. Now, he probably doesn't have a shot at that particular runner at 2B, but if were say, Vogelbach, he may well have a play at 2B or hold him to a single. Or if there had been a runner at 1B...the runners don't automatically get two bases in that situation. This was a good opportunity to point out what spectator interference is and how the rule is applied. Kalas swung and missed.

I do too. I especially regret not hearing Blum more often (and Julia). But as someone who listens to tons of radio broadcasts--not just of the Astros--i find that the FM/AM spectrum actually tends to be a little looser or more relaxed than the TV. You tend to run into large tracts of silence on TV broadcasts, or sequences of commentators reading verbatim the graphic on the screen (looking at you, Michael Kay!), while something much more convivial and casual unfolds in the more hidden realm of radio. Also, for whatever reason, the jockocracy seems to hold a little less sway on radio.

By your logic anything doing that job would be annoying. But you blame it on her? She is better than most in that role.

I like Ford and Sparks as well. And, Sparks in the post season, especially post game interviews, are a riot.
Kalas and Blum are good. I like the player stories Blum brings to the discussion. And, he really shines when they bring other former players into the booth for an inning.
Your Morales comment is confounding to me. MM nails it above.
And, finally, if ever I am critical of either the TV or radio teams, all I have to do is listen to another teams' broadcast team for a few minutes. My goodness, there's some crap broadcast teams out there. Flip over to the Seattle feed for a couple of minutes tonight if you want an example.

If you ever want to get a quick sample of this, watched the Condensed Game Highlights on MLB.com the next morning. Each team's highlights get their broadcast team. In the first game of the Mariners series, their announcer actually said "Next stop, pound town!" after a Mariner home run.
