Geezerdonk said it first, but what a great acquisition Miley has been. Better stuff than Keuchel at times but is essentially the same pitcher without the huge price tag and mouth.
-
The was a graphic last night comparing the two through their first 8 starts. I had forgotten how bad Dallas was last year.

He had a bad start but ended up having a very good year.
But yes, so far Miley is another inspired roster move by Luhnow.

12-11, 3.74 is “very” good? Where is the very good bar set?

200 innings. Top 10 in quality starts. Better than the vast majority of starting pitchers.

Over his last 20 starts he was 9-3, 3.25
3 or 4 really bad starts skewed his final numbers

Miley being the fastest worker in the league is also a nice bonus. Really good pickup.

So 3-8 the rest of the year?

Yes 3-8 4.45. The team was 6-8 in those 14 starts and a couple of those starts were good starts with no run support. 5 starts giving up at least 4 and 9 giving up 3 or less. 9 starts of at least 6 innings as well

He has a ranch near Austin. He is helping to fill the burly McGattis role. He is an avid hunter and fisherman. At a cost less than a third of Keuchel's QO, he is perfect for the Astros.

Everyone can look up Keuchel's numbers and construct solid arguments about how good or not good he was.
His 1st inning ERA was 6.88. In 34 games he gave up 3 first inning homers and 11 doubles.
He did make it to the 5th in 32 of 34 starts and to the 8th in 2.
ERA in other innings stayed low until the 5th, 6th, and 7th.
It was a weird, uneven year with weird uneven games. He didn't suck, he wasn't great, but he was rarely mediocre.
Personally I found it exhausting but I appreciated his durability. And god help him if the hpu wasn't going to give him low strikes.

+1. These kind of moves are the hallmark of an extremely shrewd GM. Let’s hope Miley can shoulder a heavier load this season.

Durable, yes. Inconsistent, yes. Decent year, with last 20 starts being very good, yes. Very good year overall, no. We’ll see if he ever signs, but I think he is on the downhill slide and should have accepted the QO.

And here's the crazy thing...if you asked me today who I'd rather see start a game in the playoffs it would be Miley. I've been saying for a couple years now that I felt the new found (except for some like AH) ability by umps to stick to a standard strikezone was going to hurt Keuchel. I think he needs the Tom Glavine treatment to be an ace. Without this he is a #3-4 starter at best.

He should have accepted the 5 yr/$90 million deal back in 2016.

I don't mind him betting on himself in 16 but just because you turn down 90 3 years ago doesn't mean you can get 90 now

Exactly.

how long can this go on before it becomes unrealistic for any team to sign him for the season. Can he be season ready and come in and pitch?

No. His simulated games he pitches each Tuesday are not the same as game action. He’ll need a little time in the minors.
-
Keuchel will see more offers after the draft when the associated draft pick compensation disappears. But he probably still won't like the offers.

I agree. Seems any 1 year offers would be much lower since it would be after June 3rd-5th and he would need some time in the minors before pitching on the MLB club. 1 year offer...Guess we should call it a 5 month contract!

Or, in Clemens terms, two years.

With skipped road trips if he's not scheduled to start!

And no questioned how he became known around here as DQ.
