Title: College Football 2018
Post by: Col. Sphinx Drummond on October 21, 2018, 08:18:20 am
The Purdue upset of Ohio State was so beautiful on several layers. The Tyler Trent (https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2018/10/20/doyel-tyler-trent-inspires-purdue-football-upset-ohio-state/1700078002/) story is both heart breaking and heart warming.

I'll bet the Urban Meyer press conference afterward was fun.

It's been a real treat to be up here in Buckeye country for that debacle. There's been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth, including accusations that Urban needs some better defensive coaches. I told them that this indeed was some feat. Not only did they break their streak against Purdue of twenty-gazillion games, but they managed to turn a 29 point favorite into a 29 point loss. I comforted them with the knowledge that a 58 point swing doesn't just happen every day.

I saw Tom Rinaldi's feature on College Gameday yesterday on this young man (Trent). Rinaldi's pieces often bring a tear to my eye but this one was really tough. The pain the young man was enduring was palatable. Not to mention the agony of his parents and family. Cancer sux.

Kris Boyd's selection as All Big 12 is a triumph of hype over production. He is rarely near his receiver when the ball arrives.

Davis, on the other hand, is a stud. I like Sterns, too, but I don't think he's fast enough for free safety.

That was just about the poorest decision I've seen in a while. 4th and 11 at midfield? What were they thinking?

There are 13 QBs from Texas high schools currently in the NFL.  All of 1 of them went to UT, and Colt was a 5-year backup.

At least 14 if you count Carr (sophomore and junior year at Sugar Land). Mahomes, Stafford, Keenum, Luck , McCown Mayfield, Daniel, Dalton, Brees, Foles, Griffin, Tannehill, and McCoy

I kind of blocked the Carrs out of my Houston memory, but you are correct.

What's startling (or sickening, depending on your allegiance) is how many of them were not even recruited by UT.

Were any of them, excluding Colt, recruited by Texas?

I've seen enough of Murray on the football field.  I don't like the guy, but he really is a great college QB.  I hope to see him flail at some breaking balls in CC or RR one day.

Stafford and Griffin were.

Brees wanted to go to A&M, but they weren't interested.

UT went all in on Garret Gilbert instead of Luck, though Luck may not have been interested anyway.

Manziel wanted to go to UT really bad, but they weren't interested in him either.

It's been reported that UT recruited Griffin solely as a DB.

To the UH folks here. What’s behind Major’s canning?

Is it just an evaluation of his coaching, or something more?

My outside impression:
1. Fertitta didn’t like the hire in the first place and wanted a bigger name.
2. The bowl debacle showed a severe lack of coaching.
3. They already had a handshake agreement with Holgorsen.

In terms of #1, Tillman is the one who basically hired Applewhite.   2 is correct.  Who knows on #3, but I hope you are right.

It was clear Major was in over his head.  0-3 in bowl games, and outscored 137-51.   Here is a breakdown on Major's 2 seasons.  https://gocoogs.com/major-applewhites-dismissal/

This year he started 7-1 and ended up losing 5 of 6 to end the year, ending with being humiliated, again, in a bowl game.   I thought he was 100% coming back until the Army game, even then I still figured he'd be back because of the buyout.  Losing Briles hurt too.  Major has to be the worst coach ever in hiring assistant coaches.  If he was back, he'd be on his 3rd OC and 3rd DC in 3 years.  All but Briles getting fired for being absolutely terrible at their job.

Aside from his abysmal record in hiring coaches, he was a zero when it came to energizing the fan base and promoting the program.  An absolute vanilla wafer.  The antithesis of the previous coach.

I agree with the above, except unless you count the interim coach for the bowl embarrassment, he'd only be on his second DC. They were plagued by injuries to key defensive players and losing King was the death knell, but in the end, Major was a dud.

They were missing multiple starters at key positions, and no they don't have much depth. Of course, that's not unique to Applewhite or UH, it's pretty typical for schools of that type. They just rarely have much talent at the second team level.

My impression of Applewhite is that he was just underwhelming in every way. Not terrible, just was not going to take them anywhere, and it was obvious.

Holgorsen.  You may be right about something going on at WVU (probably doesn’t enjoy the couch-burning MFers), but he’d be a good hire, IMO.

It is spelled Holgorsen btw...

I sincerely hope all of you in Houston get used to spelling his name soon!

One good thing about his time here is that a local burrito place came up with a “Dirty Dana” burrito. It’s excellent.

What's in it?

He did a good job of making OSU and WVU fun to watch (please hire a good DC though), UH needs some local buzz and people in the stands if they want a chance to get picked up by a real conference.  Sampson is doing his part so far.
