Title: Under the Knife 2019 & Prior
Post by: Nate Colbert on October 14, 2018, 07:08:23 pm
Thought this deserved its own thread and could more easily update moving forward...

According to his Instagram account, Alex House (24th rounder from 2017 out of Florida Atlantic who pitched just 5 innings this season) had arm surgery last month. Unless indicated otherwise going forward, gonna assume for now it was Tommy John.

Also Ryan Thompson (23rd rounder, 2014) confirms via his instagram that he had TJS in May.

So many minor league pitchers having TJS, delaying or possibly ending their prospects of being a ML pitcher.
Is this SOP for baseball?

Helpful article to this novice:

Snuff, you might want to take a look at these OWA threads from the past few years. Lotsa good info on TJS and how it's developing:

NC, you handled that beautifully. Thanks! If you're not the site's substantive MVP, I don't know who else is!

TY for the links, Nate.  I tried several searches and found a number of posts, but did not find these threads.

[New Tommy John Procedure?]  Good to know that an alternative procedure has been available since 2013, but the May 2018 article stated that it has been used world wide only 200 times by that date.

[Facts about Tommy John surgery]  Interesting stats.
For example, one table estimated that 87% of the ML games will have at least one pitcher that has had TJS.  The precentage ranges as high as 98% SF or Colorado to as low as 65% for Boston and 68% for Baltimore.  (Houston was 84% probability.

On the next table, Baltimore has not had a ML Pitcher have TJS since June 2013, while Boston's last TJS was May 2016.  I wonder if Boston or Baltimore have discovered something or have just been lucky.

[Reducing Tommy John surgeries]  This list in this thread is most helpful, encouraging young pitchers to not focus on lighting up the radar gun and taking time off from baseball to enjoy other sports.  Nutrition, hydration, conditioning and not pitching when tired can help the body to naturally recover.

Thank you, Nate.

As I am checking out more OWA threads on TJS, here's a study that redefines "successful recovery" in returning to the ML after TJS:
https://www.fangraphs.com/tht/tommy-john-surgery-success-rates-in-the-majors/ (https://www.fangraphs.com/tht/tommy-john-surgery-success-rates-in-the-majors/)

....The definition of “success” in each of those four studies is a return to pitch in a single major league game.....  the pitcher is ready for big league action....
....I would submit that a more relevant question would be how often pitchers return and contribute in a meaningful way....look solely at the quantity of game action a player participates in following the return from the surgery....

PS: If this article has already been discussed elsewhere, please let me know & I will delete it.
Title: Eovaldi has had TJS Twice, in hs and during 2016...
Post by: Snuffy on October 25, 2018, 09:06:42 pm
While he was pitching in the WS last night one of the announcers shared that Eovaldi had TJS during hs and during 2016.

Nate signed with the Rays in February 2017 in part due to the club's reputation in handling pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery… with help from the club's training staff, he achieved his goal of being physically ready to return by the end of the 2017 season, and the Rays exercised his 2018 option.....

(2017) Spent the entire season rehabbing from a second Tommy John surgery…is attempting to become the 32nd player to pitch in the majors after two Tommy John surgeries, and only the 12th pitcher to start a major league game after doing so…could become the third to pitch for the Rays after two Tommy John surgeries, following Al Reyes and Lance Carter, and the first to start a game for the Rays....

Note: During 2018, Eovaldi started 10 games for TB and 11 for Boston - after his 2nd TJS.
Impressive!

JJ Cooper in today's BA chat says Jairo Solis recently had Tommy John so adding him to the list. He also said Joe Perez had several injuries this year but none considered serious. That info was apparently out of date as Perez on his IG account today indicated that he has had another surgery and (even though he doesn't state specifically) apparently it was TJS #2. I'll correct this later if it turns out to have been another type of surgery.

All told, that would be the 8th TJS for an Astros' player since March...

Labrum surgery per his comment. No idea what the recovery time is, but here's hoping he can finally get back on the field before long.
