Title: Astros at Orioles, 9/28/18
Post by: Nate Colbert on September 28, 2018, 04:01:23 pm
The quest for 103 starts off against a pitcher with a 1.43 WHIP and just 70 Ks in 96 IP with this annoyingly-described lineup:

1. Some short Venezuelan guy playing 2B
2. A redneck in RF
3. LSU guy at 3B
4. A taller Venezuelan guy playing LF
5. Some kid from PR playing SS
6. Best fat guy hitter since the Puma playing 1B
7. Cannonball at DH
8. Another PR guy at C
9. Short Vandy guy in CF

Ex-Bruin who ain't exactly fond of another ex-Bruin his team will see next week

I like the lineup descriptors.

A step beyond analytics.

Apparently won't see action against the Astros this weekend...

Brittany Ghiroli @Britt_Ghiroli 2 hours ago

Chris Davis finishes with a -3.2 WAR and a .168 batting average.

That's the lowest BA among qualifying players in Major League baseball history.

The Astros have committed only 62 errors this season. Prior to this season, the fewest errors they had made in a season was 67 (2008).

Bunt base hit for Tuve, then Reddick/Bregman/Marwin retired in order.

0-0 after T1.

Single by Jonathan Villar in B1 and a double by Adam Jones scores a run in B1. Would have been worse if Altuve hadn't made an outstanding play previous to that by ranging far to his right and making a throw to first on the run from the far side of 2B.

1-0 Birds after 1 inning.

Adam Jones is pretty good.

CC leads off T2 with his 4th K in 5 ABs since returning. Puma 2 follows with a whiff as well and McCann doesn't Cannonball with a FO to LF.

Down 1-0 going to B2.

Quick 1-2-3 inning for Cole in B2.

Still down 1 going to T3.

Title: Re: Astros at Orioles, 9/28/18

Machete hacks a single to lead off T3.
Kemp (on an 0-16 skid) plunked to put runners on 1st and 3rd with 0 outs.
Altuve flies out to LF. Machete tries to challenge DJ Stewart's arm (and I think rightly so given what I remember about Stewart from his college days) but is thrown out at 3rd trying to advance.
Reddick also flies out to end inning.

Still down 1-0 going to B3.

Strikeout of leadoff hitter and then Machete cuts down would-be basestealer Cedric Mullins (who had singled) for 2nd out. TK says that 5 of 8 he's thrown out since joining stros.

Villar walks before Mancini grounds out to end frame.

Still 1-0 after 3.

Lackluster T4 for Astros--whiff for Bregman, GO for Marwin, GO for CC.

Wrong side of 1-0 score going to B4.

Feel free to take over PBP.

Astros take a break from making a shitty pitcher shine with the Reddick homer in T6 to tie it up.

1-1 going to B6.

Altuve and Reddick exit stage right to get some rest. Marisnick is the CF replacement, Tucker the RF replacement. Marwin moves to 2nd while Kemp shifts to LF.

Cole finishes regular season with 200 1/3 innings and 276 Ks as he apparently exits game after retiring all 3 batters in B6.

1-1 to T7.

Gattis (with just 1 hit in 16 pinch-hit ABs this season) steps in for McCann with two outs and CC on first via walk. He also walks. 2 on for Machete. GO ends inning.

7 innings for O's hurler matches his career high.

1-1 as B7 beckons.

Sipp takes over on the mound.

There were no disturbances in the force and we move on to T8 still tied at 1.

New pitcher for the O's in T8.

Kemp pops up the bunt for out #1 but Marisnick and Tucker follow with walks. 1 out with LSU guy at the plate.

Infield base hit for Bregman loads bases (and keeps his road on-base streak alive).

Marwin singles to left, Marisnick scores to give the club first lead of the night at 2-1. Tucker had a better read on the ball than Gary Pettis (or knew of DJ Stewart's less than stellar athleticism) and could have also scored.

CC's offensiveness continues with the GIDP to end inning.

Up by 1 as B8 beckons.

McHugh on. Hopefully he straightens out his recent troubles.

And impresses with 2 straight punchouts and then a popup.

2-1 good guys as the 9th calls.

Yeah, I thought it was a little hard to follow on the replay, so on the field in real time wouldn't be any easier I guess.

Another new pitcher on for O's in T9.

White Ks on 3 straight pitches leading off.

Oso Blanco robbed of a hit by the 3B on a line drive.

Machete grounds out to end things.

Osuna on for B9.

Mancini/Jones/Stewart (3-5 hitters in Baltimore lineup) is what Osuna will be facing in B9 as he tries to hold the 2-1 lead.

Mancini grounds out.

Adam Jones flies out to Kemp in left.

Stewart bloops a single to keep the O's alive. WP moves the pinchrunner to 2nd.

Jake saves the game with a diving catch off the bat of Nunez.

101!!!!!

Thank heaven for Jake Marisnick.

Was Maldonado crossed up on that bouncer? He was trying to backhand it, which seemed suboptimal given the situation.

I wonder what the catch probability or whatever it is was for that. Sinking liner, full speed dive coming directly in on the ball. What a spectacular catch.

Hinch giving Marisnik shit about taking a first step backwards and playing it into a dive was classic. Then Jake was asked if he stepped back and he just laughed and said “I can’t remember.”

Which still leaves the question about Straw in the Fisher role, or carry White and Gattis.

Cole allowed 0-1ER in 12 of his 32 starts. 6.424 Hits/9 are 8th in franchise history, and the lowest for an Astros pitcher since 1986.

Hinch:
[This is the deepest team most of these guys have played on. They're realists when they understand this is a hard team to crack. I've said that to them in a team meeting. You have to be real with them. They look around and see the numbers and what's possible.

That would be a ballsy move. He is useless at the plate right now, but his defense still seems ok. There's always the hope that he'll catch fire.

Agree.   He's playing defense below his peak but still at a good level.

Let him be Adam Everett.  It's not like there's a hot bat he's keeping off the roster or on the bench.
