I remember reading The Umpire Strikes Back.   He told a story of watching Nolan Ryan throw a high fastball that exploded.  He waited for the crowd reaction,  but nothing.  Then the catcher threw the ball back.   I think he said it happened again.

So he goes to an eye doc.  Both times the ball was coming in more or less directly at his eyes. The speed at which it went from a dot at 60+ feet to a full size baseball inches from his eye was too fast for his eye to adjust so he just saw stars.

McCann...0-2...hit by pitch
Kemp "doubles" to the RF corner, McCann to 3B...Gamel kicks it around down in the corner as McCann stops at 3B for a cigarette.  Kemp has to hit the breaks rounding 2B
Springer singles to LCF, McCann scores, Kemp to 3B, Span kicks it and Springer to 2B
Altuve...infield in...chops to 3B, Kemp scores on the 5-3, Springer has to hold at 2B
Bregman...full count...flies out F8 on ball four in the dirt
Marwin doubles off the yellow line on the LCF wall, Springer scores...HR review in progress...HOME RUN!  Marwin scores
White...0-2...strikes out swinging

But the Astros put up a crooked number...lead 4-0

McHugh in...Marisnick in to CF, Springer to RF

Segura...0-2...1-2...2-2...pops out to shallow RF
Cano doubles to RCF...Springer really laid out and had it in his glove, but it bounced out when he hit the grounds...
Cruz grounds to SS and beats it out for an infield single...Hinch challenging...replay shows he's out...yep, overturned...6-3, Cano to 3B
Span...3-0...takes a pitch almost down the middle for ball four
Seager flies out F7

Rumbelow in for the M's

Altuve...3-0...3-1...3-2...walks
Bregman...3-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch that almost hits him, Altuve thrown out 2-6, half jogging into 2B...throw was WAY off the bag towards 3B, but Segura able to run go get it, and run back to the bag and tag out the non-sliding Altuve...HInch challenging..,overturned, and it's a stolen base for Altuve.  But it wasn't pretty.
Marwin walks
White flies to deep LCF...Span and Gordon converge, and it's the old "I got it, you take it" as it drops between them...scored a double...Altuve scores, Marwin to 3B
Tucker, pinch hitting for Correa, grounds out 4-3 on the first pitch, Marwin scores, White to 3B
Gurriel strikes out swinging

But the Astros take a 7-0 lead to the 9th

Much more weirdness including an rbi triple from the guy who hit the grand slam earlier. Nfi what his name is. He hit the triple to Laureano who often throws out guys when he's in the concourse somewhere.

I haven't seen the lesbians in a while.

Did not see any of the game last night, and I really enjoy reading the GZ straight through with morning coffee.

Every game I expect Correa to bust out of this horrible slump. Maybe I will have to wait for ST. As y’all pointed out, Bregman has not been much better lately. Could be the BBGs did not appreciate his look at me strutting.

Just the facts.  It's the stretch drive, results now matter.

This is an important point, I think. Stats about past performance do not matter. All that matters is THIS game and now. When a hitter fails in a key AB in a winnable game, I get no consolation from someone’s telling me what his BA or the cursed OPS is. This is magnified in a pennant race or the postseason.

This is exactly why Gattis with 24 or 25 HR and 74 rbi can barely get an AB right now.

I don't know whether this grind is wearing them down or getting them sharp.   But it is fun to grip the rail and watch.

Every game is like a postseason game and is infinitely more exciting than a runaway division win. I know I was on a very small stage, and perhaps my experience is not relevant to you,  but for me there was nothing better than coaching a playoff game. Mark could share a player’s perspective on what it was like for him. His team won five pressure-packed games against the state’s best to reach the UIL State Tournament. All that matters is this inning and this AB and this coaching decision today.

I didn't think so, but it's hard to tell as it is normally so pronounced anyway.  I didn't think he looked any better last night.  He got his change over and one of those lefties just watched a few, but it didn't seem COD like.

They boo'ed the replay. You'd be surprised what a racket seven hundred people can make when they really get their dander up.

But had they given the A's the out that would have been tremendously unfair because had Piscotty caught the ball, the runner on third most likely would have tagged.

So it was a fucked up situation all around.

On spectator interference, you rule is to nullify the interference.  That means awarding outs that would have been made, and placing runners where they would likely have ended up.  They certainly could have, and likely would have, allowed the runner at 3B to score, and possibly the runner at 2B to move to 3B.

I had never really considered the possible outcome of an out mentioned by Chuck or the out and run mentioned by HH.  I just assumed (wrongly of course) that if your own fans are stupid fuckers and prevent you from catching the out, then you pay.  That's why I figured the fans would be pissed.  You know, the Bartman scenario.

Funny thing is, one of them had a glove and the other one didn't. The one without the glove was sitting next to the railing, which, in retrospect, seems like a lapse in judgement or at the very least a lack of foresight.

Reminiscent of Springer's attempt, she had the ball in her glove but in the end couldn't make the play. The ball trickled out of her glove and fell pathetically onto the dirt as Piscotty stood there channeling Alou.

The Bartman Play wasn’t interference as Alou was reaching over the railing. He would have caught the ball, but it was not in the field of play. In that case, the fielder reaches into the stands at his own risk. It wasn’t a “your fan” kind of thing.
