Shit, it doesn't seem like it ought to be September already.
Anyway some trivia for tonight's game from the game notes...
Tyler White (33rd rounder) and Josh James (34th round) will become only the 2nd pair of Astros to start in the same game after being drafted by Houston in the 30th round or later. Only other duo to do so was Darryl Kile (30th) and Eric Anthony (34th) in the 91-93 seasons.
James is the lowest drafted pitcher in Astros' history to start a game for them (Kile was the lowest previously).
(I'm guessing that there had to be some NDFA duos or NDFA pitchers who started for the Astros over the last 50+ years but whatever.)
-
Flipping Altuve and Bregman today...
1. Springer
2. Altuve
3. Bregman
4. Correa
5. White
6. Reddick
7. Marwin
8. McCann
9. Kemp

Oswalt is the most prominent NDFA I can remember, but he was a 23rd rounder.
ETA: I'm an idiot: he was a draft-and-follow, not an NDFA. I got mixed up.

AJ's presser last night made it seem like he wasn't going to entertain any talk of Correa's struggles. Along the lines of he got on twice, he had a good game.
We all know that they know more is needed of Correa. It seems as if it's Correa in the 4 hole or bust.

Great info! It would be interesting to know how many low/late picks actually get to the majors.
Thanks, Nate!

Sandwiching him b/t Bregman and White should get him some hittable pitches - and should provide some protection for Altuve as well.

He's getting nothing but hittable pitches now. The problem isn't that they're pitching around him, it's that he can't hit shit right now.

He won't swing, and when he does, he's late, late, late. Hence things like that weak-shit pop-up to 1st last night.

It's got to be as frustrating for him as for us to see him struggle so.
But if he's going to be in the lineup, put him in the most favorable position possible - and temporarily separate Altuve & Correa until Altuve gets out of his mini-slump.

Yes, I'm all for moving Correa down, but because they need someone in the cleanup spot who can drive in a run now and then, not because they're pitching around him.
-
Let's hope the line up (and the bull pen) doesn't hang this rookie out to dry the way they did Valdez last night.
It seems like Correa takes a fat pitch almost every at bat. I think that he is in a prolonged deep slump - as opposed to being injured. If he weren't right, I don't think Hinch and Luhnow would be playing him.

A couple strong hits could do wonders for him, and could ignite the offense.
It won't take much to hear opposing broadcasters saying, "Wow! THAT didn't take long!" again.
-

It's not just Correa. Last year, if a pitcher was foolish enough to throw a get-me-over-fastball on the first pitch of the AB, the Astros were quite happy to punish it. They still worked a lot of deep counts, but those started because the pitchers knew they couldn't get a freebie on the first pitch. This year, for whatever reason, most of the guys seem determined to work counts by not swinging at pitches early in the count (Altuve excepted, who is happy to swing at anything, even if it's not close). And pitchers know that, so they're just throwing cookies to start an AB, and most guys start off 0-1. It's infuriating.
-
101!
-
Sit down, meat!
James Revis hits first K quickly.
-
That was a lollygaggin' single courtesy Carlos Correa.
-
T1:
Calhoun...0-2...1-2...2-2...strikes out swinging
Fletcher...full count...chops to SS...beats it out for an infield hit...don't think Correa's internal clock was calibrated there
Fletcher steals 2B...McCann had not chance, especially when Altuve was halfwy to the mound to field it
Trout...full count...walks
Upton flies out F8
Simmons...full up...strikes out looking
No score
-
Nice start by the new guy.
-
Nice start by the new guy.
Well, except for the 25 or so pitches.
-
B1:
Springer grounds out 6-3
Altuve pops out F6 on a pitch in his eyes
Bregman strikes out looking
No score
-
Well, except for the 25 or so pitches.
He kept his cool after running into a couple of problems and put up a zero, I'll take it.
-
James really struggling with command.
-
3-0 Angels
-
Dang.
One hundo is fun, but 50 pitches in 2 innings is playing with fire.
-
The important thing is the youngsters get a chance to play.
-
T2:
Fernadez walks
Ward singles to CF
Arcia strikes out swinging
Young strikes out looking
Calhoun...full count...homers to RF, Fernandez scores, Ward scores
Fletcher grounds out 5-3
3-0 Angels
-
Correa's approach of taking two fastball strikes over the plate before swinging wildly at a breaking ball low and away has yet to yield any benefit.
-
Felix Pena is having his way with the Astros. No more home games.
-
B2:
Correa...takes a cookie right down the center for strike one....takes a cookie down the center for strike two...rolls over on a slider off the plate and grounds out 6-3
White...takes a cookie right down the center for strike one...1-1...grounds out 5-3
Reddick takes a cookie right down the center for strike one...takes a cookie right down the center for strike two...strikes out swinging at a pitch that bounces...2-3 on the putout
What a sad lineup this has become
3-0 Angels
-
Every AB starts 0-1.
And ends shortly thereafter.
-
T3:
Trout...0-2...1-2...strikes out looking
Upton strikes out swinging
Simmons...0-2...grounds out 5-3
3-0 Angels
-
Marwin sitting pretty at third after a double and an error.
And, first pitch hitting.
-
Double, E7 and sac fly for McCann...3-1
-
And just like that 3-1.
Welcome back, McCann.
-
Someone other than White drives in a run...wow
-
That error was hilarious.
From an Astros point of view.
-
Correa's approach of taking two fastball strikes over the plate before swinging wildly at a breaking ball low and away has yet to yield any benefit.
You have to admit that it's probably catching the other side by surprise.
-
B3:
Marwin swings at the first pitch, drives it off the LCF wall, Upton kicks it, and Marwin to 3B on the double and E7
McCann flies out F9...Marwin scores on the sac fly
Kemp...works the count full...check swing at a pitch in his eyes and taps it to 3B...5-3
Springer grounds out 6-3
3-1 Angels
-
T4:
Fernandez flies out F8
Ward strikes out looking
Arcia strikes out swinging
3-1 Angels
-
James: We can work with this.
-
Carlos with a solid knock.
(After taking 2 hittable FBs)
-
B4:
Altuve...3-0...3-1...taps back to the mound...1-3
Bregman...takes a meatball right down the middle for strike one... flies out F7
Correa singles to CF
White grounds into FC, Correa out 5-4 at 2B
3-1 Angels
-
T5:
Young...0-2...strikes out swinging
Calhoun...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...walks
Fletcher grounds out 4-3, Calhoun, running on the pitch, to 2B
Trout...0-2...pops out F6
3-1 Angels
-
Well, I"ll give James a lot of credit for getting his shit together and not being intimidated by these guys. Good job.
-
Assume that will be all for James...not a bad debut...needs to command better, limit the free passes, but a solid effort.
-
Well, I"ll give James a lot of credit for getting his shit together and not being intimidated by these guys. Good job.
Yep.
Now let's work on the offense.
-
2 on 2 out for Springer
-
B5:
Reddick flies out F9
Marwin...full count...singles to CF
McCann pops out F2
Kemp singles to RF, Marwin to 2B
Springer...quickly down 0-2...wild pitch makes it 1-2, Marwin to 3B, Kemp to 2B...pop out F6 as Simmons and Upton collide
3-1 Angels
-
0-1, Springer gets a pitch off the plate called a strike.
0-2 vs 1-1. Little things keep biting them, most in their control, some not.
-
0-1, Springer gets a pitch off the plate called a strike.
0-2 vs 1-1. Little things keep biting them, most in their control, some not.
After he took a hanger to get in the hole 0-1.
-
T6:
Peacock in...
Upton strikes out swinging
Simmons...3-0...3-1...3-2...grounds out 5-3
Fernandez...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...stikes out swinging at a pith that hits him in the back leg
3-1 Angels
-
There's a little thing that helped them.
-
Bregman!!
3-2
-
Yes!
Well timed with that graphic too.
-
Imagine that you're Jeff Luhnow, and the Angels call you this off-season and offer a straight-up trade, Simmons for Correa. Do you do it?
-
B6:
Altuve grounds out 5-3
Bregman homers to LF on the first pitch
Correa rolls out 5-3
White strikes out looking
3-2 Angels
-

No, Might regret it but no.

lmaoooooooo
Explain., please
-
T7:
Ward flies out F9
Peacock out, Sipp in
Arcia pops out F3
Young flies out F8
3-2 Angels at the stretch
-
B7:
Pena still in for the Angels...never pitched this deep in a game in his career before...
Reddick...takes a cookie right down the center for strike one...grounds out 4-3
Marwin flies out F7
McCann pops up right over the plate, Arcia drops it, but it's foul...E2 and McCann gets another swing...and his hacks at a pitch in the dirt to make it 1-2...2-2...eventually flies out F7
3-2 Angels
-
Nice outing by Sipp.
-
T8:
Calhoun...full count...strikes out swinging
That's it for Sipp...Smith in
Fletcher...full count...singles to RF
Trout...0-2...grounds out 6-3...Fletcher was running on the pitch, and moves to 2B
Cowart, pinch hitting for Upton, swings and misses a pitch that hit him in the thigh to make it 2-2...strikes out looking
3-2 Angels
-
Yes Cowart, you went around.
Then got drilled on the leg.
But you went around first.
Then watched strike 3.
-
Any word on why Upton left the game?

Assume it was related to the collision in LF, but don't know the specifics.

He stayed down as they cut to commercial.
-
Weird.
First pitch FB taken for a strike.
-
Weird.
First pitch FB taken for a strike.
It's weird, alright, but it's not surprising.
-
Catcher's interference gets runners on first and second, no outs.
Altuve, Bregman, Correa up.
-
It's weird, alright, but it's not surprising.
It’s almost like the Astros want to spot the opposing pitcher a strike every at bat.
-
I just got home and turned on the TV and saw the reigning MVP square around to bunt. WHAT THE FUCK?!
-
What the fuck is Altuve doing?
-

Twice.

Strike two and there were meat, too.
I don't know what is wrong with him, but he needs to fucking figure it out right fucking now.
-
I guess we can be glad it wasn't a double-play.
-
That was a pile of vomit.
-
He seems too far off the plate.
-
Dammit.
Smashed it right into his glove
104 mph.
-
That's some lousy luck.

Altuve is pathetic.

He seems too far off the plate.
Altuve is always far off the plate.
The difference right now is that he's stepping in the bucket instead of at the ball when he decides to swing. And the other major problem is that he isn't swinging at hitable pitches. Regardless, Altuve either needs to be on the DL to fix whatever is wrong with him or he needs to be up there actively trying to hit the ball.
-
Correa pick 'em up with a 2-out RBI single!!! Tie ball game!
-
It's a Christmas miracle!
-
Thank goodness Correa came through.
Second hit of the night, both well struck up the middle.

No. Pure.

That Altuve at bat was about as bad as it gets for anyone, much less an MVP, 200 hits a year kind of guy.
At least JR James is off the hook for the loss.

The only thing he's scared of is going back to Fresno.

B8:
Bedrosian in for the Halos...
Kemp lines a single up the middle, nearly took Bedrosian's head off
Springer reaches on catcher's interference on a check swing, Kemp to 2B
Altuve...squares arond and takes a perfect pitch to bunt to make it 1-2...what the fuck, Jose?...strikes out looking
Bregman lines out to 3B
Correa singles up the middle, Kemp scores, Springer to 3B
Bedrosian out, Robles in
White doubles of the top of the LF wall...Springer scores, Correa scores
Reddick...0-2...1-2...2-2...full up...walks
Marwin...quickly down 0-2...1-2...2-2...flies to deep LCF, Young is there and clanks it...E8...White scores, Reddick scores, Marwin to 2B

One of my bands had back to back dates once in places about 50 or 60 miles apart, places with the same owner. We finished the show in the first place and drove that night to the second town just to get there and have a whole day to do nothing. Well, nothing turned into watching Hee Haw all day and the final episode was an especially good one with Smokin' Joe Frazier and Goerge Jones as guests so of course we watched all of it. We were late, quite late, to load in and the club's manager was fucking irate. I KNOW WHERE YOU PLAYED LAST NIGHT! WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN?
Uhh, I don't know, dude, you ever seen Smokin' Joe sing Six Days on the Road before?

That 8th was fucked. The M’s almost shit the bed.

I only saw the 9th, but I did see the A’s put up the 4 spot.

I have a Buck Owens guitar in my collection, by the way.
This is amazing and it was even before Kereoke was cool.

Both of those venues were in West Virginia, by the way.
Maybe that's why there was a Hee Haw marathon on TV.

Cool, I'm jealous... The Gibson or Harmony version?
In 1966 Buck and The Buckaroos had their instruments painted red, white and blue, an extension of Bucks innate patriotism. When these instruments were seen on Hee Haw, guitar manufacturers began making offers to him to market a guitar in those colors. Though Buck used a red, white and blue acoustic guitar built for him by Semie Moseley of Mosrite Guitars, his business sense told him an expensive model of that type wouldnt sell to the uninformed public.
He finally licensed Chicago Musical Instruments (Owners of Gibson guitars) to market a $99 acoustic model, and received a $2.50 royalty on each sold. He knew that Sears would market them but had no idea they would sell as well as they did until the first royalty check came.
"The very first statement, they sent me $15,000 he laughs. "I said, Oh, you mean THAT Sears!"
Harmony Sovereign had made a reissue of this guitar called the American Pride which sold in 2005. It was a limited edition guitar and are starting to become a collectible because of the short production run. The colors of this guitar are a little different from the original Buck Owens. Red is deeper and not as bright and the blue is deeper as well. More like a navy blue than a royal blue.

The only thing he's scared of is going back to Fresno.
If you've ever been to Fresno, you'd be scared, too.

Don’t leave Eschenfelder out of the triumvirate of broadcaster suckitude.
I think Eschenfelder is pretty good on the studio shows. Should never be near a booth doing PBP though.
Stanton must be paid by the word.

I wouldn't say he's pretty good at anything. He's serviceable at reading a teleprompter and occasionally making semi-witty quips.

Stanton is the same way. It's not that he's an idiot or anything. When he's asked a direct question, he has good insight. He just never fucking shuts up in the booth.

It's an old(er) one. I bought it in 2000 or so and it was plenty old when I bought it. It doesn't really sound all that great but it's cool to have.

I would take Wilson as a permanent full time replacement for Morales.
