Let's go JV.
We know we've been leaning hard on you, but we gotta do it again.

Dammit.

Welp. I thought JV k’d him looking on the 0-2, but now we are down 1-0

Verlander has become a gopher ball machine.
-
Oh boy....
-
Good grief.
-
Verlander has become a gopher ball machine.
He's got a 5.17 ERA in the month of August (3 starts) coming into the game. 5 HR's allowed in the month coming into the game as well.
-
That’s pretty much it. You’re not getting three runs off of Manea and the A’s pen.
Most important game of the season and they shit the bed in the 1st inning.
-
Top 1:
Springer strikes out
Bregman grounds out
Yuli strikes out
Bottom 1:
Martini flies out
Chapman homers
Lowrie pops out
Davis homers
Olson strikes out
2-0 Oakland after 1 inning

I hate to agree HH but recent history says you are correct.

Shitty thing about this stretch is I don’t think they’ve actually hit bottom yet. Far from it.

Bingo.
-
White diving out of the way of strikes.
-
Astros GIDP: you can set your watch by it.
-
Fun Fact: Manea is 12-0 in day games since April '17.
-
The worst part is JV is the guy who is mentally most prepared to go out there in a game like this.
And Marwin with the inning ending gidp.
-
White diving out of the way of strikes.
As well as he's hit lately, he still has that issue of being extremely jumpy on inside pitches.
-
Shitty thing about this stretch is I don’t think they’ve actually hit bottom yet. Far from it.
They’ll hit rock bottom when they’re struggling to stay above .500. It’s coming.
-
Friday night’s blown lead in the 9th was the dagger on this season.
-
As well as he's hit lately, he still has that issue of being extremely jumpy on inside pitches.
Most of those have been pitches hitting the edge of the zone after getting his eyes looking elsewhere.
That one had him looking for the outside corner but busted inside. Others have raised his eye level then cut him off at the knees.
Almost all have been strikes per zone tracker.
-
Friday night’s blown lead in the 9th was the dagger on this season.
Ow my balls.

Did Kalas just say “you’ve got the Astros who are going to win the AL West...”
Has he not been paying attention, or is he just that fucking stupid?

He was talking about “what people were saying a month ago”. (Which was mostly just him saying that a month ago) And now “it’s all up in the air” or something like that.

Most important game of the season and they shit the bed in the 1st inning.
You were saying?
-
Double, single...two on, two out for the Astros...
Essence of a slump:
A 2 out hit with a runner on 2nd doesn't result in a run.
Slump buster (?) Third straight hit does get one in.
And La Piña goes deep to get the rest of them in!
-
You were saying?
I’m saying they have no chance of scoring on Manea. No chance!
-
I had literally just said cmon Yuli hit a 3 run homer. And it is accomplished!
-
I’m saying they have no chance of scoring on Manea. No chance!
This.

I’m saying they have no chance of scoring on Manea. No chance!
You worked the reverse jinx quite well, sir.

How about 4 runs?
-
How about 4 runs?
No way. None of these guys can hit Manea. Pack it in early boys.
-
How about 4 runs?
That's not 3, now is it?
-
Man, they needed that inning. I’m pretty sure they’ve been sacrificing chickens in the clubhouse. Let’s hope someone told Verlander to breathe through his eyelids and that the Rose goes in the front between innings.

Of course the Astros scored this inning, so it’s a requirement that the Astros give up a couple too.

And our pitching continues to struggle with a clean inning after we score.

I can’t remember the last time the Astros had a big inning then went out and threw up a zero.

He didn’t know you’re allowed to swing at a first pitch fastball right down the middle.
-
Once again the opposition scores immediately after the Astros.
-
He didn’t know you’re allowed to swing at a first pitch fastball right down the middle.
Being very stubborn about his FB. He has really gotten away from the slider.
Fuck.

Verlander is up to 26 HR's on the season (including the ones today). His career high is 30.

He’s stubborn about a lot of things. I guess that’s what makes him great and frustrating at the same time.

He’ll reach that today.

Caveman!!

Captain CAAAAAAAVEMAAAAAN!

He didn’t know you’re allowed to swing at a first pitch fastball right down the middle.
Well considering Davis hit the first pitch into the bleachers in the 1st inning, you would think he would’ve had a clue.

Captain Caveman!

Manaea is fooling nobody right now.

Come on, JV. Be our ace.

It still feels like we're behind.
-
Come on, JV. Be our ace.
Need a big fucking donut!
-
Come on, JV. Be our ace.
I tried that earlier ...

Seems like JV has had some games where he leans FB early, slider/curve middle, then back to FB late.
Let's see if he throws some spin here.
Preferable good spin.
-
I can’t remember the last time the Astros had a big inning then went out and threw up a zero.
Happened 3 times on Wednesday.

Just glad to see him playing. He can go 0 for 5 and look terrible, then go out and get 8 hits in the next three games.

When Altuve comes back, what do they do with White?
I know he'll probably have to go, but he'll be first in line for September call ups.

That’s my guess. It has to be another infielder, and it’s not going to be Correa, Bregman, or Yuli.

Gattis takes a sweet hanging curve so he can take a whack at a pitch over his head.

A guy from the Grizzlies said he seemed ok, and likely would have come out after that at bat anyway. He just has a bruise.
-
Nice! Today was a good day. Hopefully more to come.
Realistically speaking:
Springer looks ok
Yuli is coming back around
Marwin has been pretty good for a while
Gattis's slumps are shorter and not as K-ridden
Altuve should be Altuve, Bregman is consistently really good
The big question remains Correa. They love showing that "last 162" stat, but this season he's batting .253. His numbers were off before the layoff (hurt and playing thru it?).
Production, then consistent production is needed from CC then the other cogs listed above should shine.

I remember a walkoff hit Correa had right before he went on the dl. Teammates were trying to celebrate with him and Correa basically waved them off while grimacing and reaching towards his back. Like in a “you guys know I’m hurting” kind of way. I think he was hurt for awhile.

After my trip to New Mexico and since it's the season, I got inspired to make a hot Hatch Green Chile salsa with fresh ingredients--like I had a Horseman's Haven. It's good and spicy. I'm kinda proud of myself.

Agree. I noticed his actions then also. I have had too back surgeries, and lower back pain is not fun. I cannot imagine playing baseball with it.

Crickets.
It appears the secret is crickets:

His muted celebration was a stark contrast with Bregman's celebration in a game or two prior to Correa's 1st walkoff. The team immediately toned it down.

Observations from the A's broadcast team as they filled the on air time at the top of the 7th:

They reveled in Maldonado’s celebration of the close of the 6th they had some truths to share about how brutal baseball can be b/c of the amount of failure involved.
(2:31:00) "….It is about enjoying your successes. This is a game – quite literally – built upon failure. And if you can’t find it (chuckle) somewhere inside of you to be able to enjoy the flash of success in a game that is built to beat you down, you will have a long one…"
(2:33:43) Then they discussed Springer hurting, having trouble gripping the bat with his gimpy hand.

Muted because he was hurt. He backed away from them with his arms outstretched.

Roasting a bunch as we speak...care to elaborate on what you did with them for your pork? Planning on doing chops or a loin, some salsa or enchilada sauce, and burgers this week.

He is better.
He covers more ground and takes better routes, but they will run on him more than on Tucker.

Just chopped up the chiles and mixed with a little chopped onion, chopped sweet red pepper and shredded mozzarella. Cut the pork tenderloin lengthwise to sort of filet it, layered on the mixture, rolled it up and tied it off with some butcher’s twine. Grilled at 500 over direct heat until 150 in the center. About 20 minutes. Finished off with some garlic/chili honey brushed over the top. Paired with some simple roasted garlic red potatoes. Had some watermelon I’d cut up Saturday for dessert.

Sounds great, was wondering if you did stuffed or smothered with the pork. Enchiladas going in the oven tonight, I'll try the pork soon.

It was more of a stuffing. It oozed out some, and wasn’t real tight, but the idea was to have have the chile mixture stuffed inside a roll of pork.

Doubtful. Tucker’s arm is no better.

I want to hear SD’s Green Chile salsa recipe. What did you add to make it spicy?

I started with 3 large whole hot Hatch chiles, boiled them with a couple of garlic cloves, then blended in a cup of water with a pinch of salt and a pinch of cumin. It was too thin and too spicy, so I finely chopped up two tomatillos and a mild Hatch chile and added to the mix and let it simmer for 20 minutes. The tomatillos add a desired mild tang. I've already wiped it out. Gonna have to make more.
