Those wins truly were amazing. The two relief pitchers we victimized had been lights out all year. They are not scrubs.
White employed a classic HS hitter’s two strike approach: choke up, shorten up, put the ball in play. Contrast his first two swings with the last one.
If Marwin lately is who he will be the rest of the year, he is the bat we needed. He is locked in.
The patchwork lineup’s performance on a tough road trip is only one reason why I love this team and how Hinch manages games.

Agreed Coach. Very similar to last year when the injury bug hit. Next man up has to perform. The difference is that we had an 11 game cushion.

That is what makes this amazing.

That was Black's first career HR allowed to a righty.
The pitch was the 4th fastest pitch to yield a homer this season.
Watch the replay again with sound. The ambient noise dies down just in time to hear the contact. Black's reaction was immediate. Camera cuts to White, then comes back to Black just in time to see his F bomb.
Priceless.

It just shows you the political culture that we live in that people didn't make more of the White vs. Black matchup.

Hell, man, it was the first HIT he had given up to a RH hitter! His reaction was priceless. Been there.

both games were nail bitters that is for sure. amazing excellent that they won, period. not taking anything away from that, you just have to wonder what if the whole crew had been there.
-
The pitching keeping the game close, and the offense battling (even when they weren't scoring runs) gave the games a playoff atmosphere, IMHO. The team's not nearly at full strength, but they still won both games late. That can only help boost confidence.

Both games reminded me of Beltran, Bagwell, and Berkman ambusing the Giants and Dustin Hermanson at that ballpark in 2004. I had the same feeling both games as I did back in 2004.

I was at Monday night's game. Amazing how much energy drained out of the stadium after Marwin's blast.
I was also very surprised by how many Astros fans were there. To me, it looked like at least a third of the crowd.

Well done, sir.
Miller commented on all the Astros fans during his call of the HR.

The late heroics aside for the moment, how did the patchwork lineup compare in terms for forcing the starters into deep counts?

Both starters went seven shutout innings. They didn’t.

MadBum threw 100 pitches total and I could have sworn he was only at 75 going into the 7th. I was afraid he might go the distance.

It appears that the backups have not been taking many naps on the bench, while the starters are working opposing pitchers.

One of the few nice things about having all of these injured players is the re-emergence of Tyler White. Not saying that he will ever be a full-time starter, but he's got a good eye (leading to a .371 OBP), enough pop in the bat, and can play a bunch of positions on the field.

He's one that Luhnow will have to make a decision on this off-season.

He could be a full time starter now. Since getting called back up in September 2016 he's hit .276/.350/.540. That's big league stuff.

I wouldn’t go that far. White will never play anything but 1B except in a blowout, or some crazy injury- or extra-inning situation.

Correct. He is inadequate anywhere else fulltime.
