Gardner with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. Captain Caaavvvemannn with a solo dinger in the top of 2nd
-
Andujar with a 2 out double, Torres drives him in with a single. Yankess 2 Astros 1.
Gardner infield single, Torres to 2nd
Judge Walks, bases loaded.
-
A two-out double and single scores a run. Then followed by a single and a walk to Judge to load 'em...
-
Bird goes down looking to end the inning
-
Morton refuses to give in and strikes out Bird to finish the inning.
Sabathia is ripe for the picking...

They had a bunch of good swings off of CC early, bit of bad luck in the 1st on Yuli's lineout with Altuve running.
-
I like doubles!
-
JD is faster from 1st to Home than I thought he would be.
-
I would really like to find the moron who is mimicking that awful strikeout whistle and staple their lips shut.
-
Charlie got his groove back.
-
Hustle play by Alex Baseball.
-
Astros get a couple in the top of the 5th, Judge hit a first pitch oppo in the bottom.
After five innings: Astros 5, Yankees 3
-
After six innings: Astros 5, Yankees 3
-
After eight innings: Astros 5, Yankees 3
-
That check swing call on Yuli was a fuckjob of the highest order. Jesus.
-
Jake is awful again.
Devo on to close.
-
Marisnick right back to the pressing and frustration, slamming the bat, bitching about calls right down the middle. Doesn’t look like his stint in AAA made much of a change.
-
Why is Jake Marisnick on this team?

That was a craptastic at bat all the way around.

To play CF late in games with a lead. Like tonight.
-
Crap. Walk the lead off hitter. Now barring a double play, you’ll have to face Judge as at least the tying run.
-
And here we go. Lead off walk to start the 9th.
-
And we’re tied. Fuck
-
Fuck Brett Gardener. God fucking damnit. Fucking lead off walks.
-
Got that real bad feeling again....

Gagging away another one. Awesome.
-
And winning run in scoring position, one out
-
Lead off walks and no real closer on this team.

After they’ve already shut the bed?

I fucking hate it when a guy blows through the 8th with a lead with ease and you make a pitching change in the 9th for no good reason. Happened the other night in Cleveland too.

You have a closer. But you burnt him for this game in non save situations the last few nights.

No Hudson... he needed "work". Way more important than having him for closing.

There’s actually a good reason why most relievers aren’t asked to go multiple innings.
-
Why the fuck are you pitching to Stanton here?
-
Winning run on 3B...two away...
-
Why the fuck are you pitching to Stanton here?
Honestly, I think I’d rather pitch to Stanton than Sanchez.

Sanchez is in a bad slump.
-
Devo strikes out the side on the 9th. But not before he stomps his dick with a leadoff walk and game-tying gopher.
Extra innings.
-
Free baseball.

Good lord, why?
-
Not adding on while the Yankees kicked the ball around all game is a fucking backbreaker. Fuck, this game has been frustrating.

And if rondon got lit up in the 9th, you would say "why did they let him pitch more than 1 inning? He doesn't pitch more than 1 inning"

I’m not watching. Did AJ go to the defensive replacements too early? Hindsight says you’d rather have had Davis up last inning than Jake.

The Yankees have made FIVE errors in this game. And could've been 6 on an errant throw on a steal that Bregman didnt advance on.
I thought the replacements came at the right time.
-
So now you can’t win without another two innings from the pen. You’re set to burn it up again tonight because you got fucking cute with your closer.
-
Oh fuck you. Just go fuck yourself Yankee Stadium.

I think they scored 3 runs in the first 2 errors. After that, ...
-
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me! How unlucky can you be??
This may not be our night. Five fucking errors and the game is tied! Shit!!!

No. The 5 errors aren't bad luck for the Astros. Not punishing five errors by scoring runs is on the Good Guys.

Second-guessing is the rule.
-
Oh fuck you. Just go fuck yourself Yankee Stadium.
I’ve been the beneficiary of that a number of times. Twice in one game at the Durham Bulls Park where there was no padding, just cinder block
I was once behind the plate and the pitcher threw one so hard it bounced off the backstop back to the pitcher on the fly, who then threw the guy out at 2B.
-

Two extra outs in the 7th and didnt add on. Davis hit one deep to CF with 2 on and 2 out to end the inning.

Because Stanton strikes out 35% of the time compared to 25% for Sanchez. Plus, I distinctly remember a time or two where Sanchez has killed us.

You better go right at Torres. I want no part of Gardner here.

Yep, it foretold bad shit.
Time for this team to respond.

You don’t need a strike out there.
-
What a fucking gag job.
-
Game over. Familiar feeling.
Man, Springer laid back on that.
-
Bad play by George. Once you take a step back, it is over. Catch the damn ball in the air or die trying. Can’t back up.

Another kick in the junk loss.

Nothing was close either

Should be a 5-1 road trip so far, instead they are 3-3.

Man, you must have been great when you played.

Ok whatever. It worked, but I’ll take a K anytime I can get it, especially with 2 outs like there was in that situation.
But it’s a moot point now.

Once again a chance to make a statement and you gag on your own cocks. Sad.

All of this. Houston needed to crush the Yankees tonight and they just fucking couldn't do it.
-
Man, you must have been great when you played.
No, and I made mistakes too. So did you PROBABLY Jim. Nothing wrong with it. It happens. George and this team will rebound.

It’s a very frustrating 35-21 team that’s for sure. They should have more than 40 wins at this point with the starting pitching they have received.
-
Losing this game also means you’ve now lost the season series against the Yankees, meaning they have the tie breaker and Home field advantage should you be fortunate enough to make the post season.
-
Also...Peacock has not been good.

No, he hasn’t been the same pitcher as last year.

I'm sure there's some overlap between anemic offensive outings and bullpen L's, but that number seems pretty high.

When the bullpen loses a game though they either blew a tie or a lead.

Not throwing his slider as much, and when he does, it is flat.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t Giles 1-1 in save opps against the Yankees this year? He got lit up in a non-save situation and since then hasn’t had a chance against them while everybody else has blown saves. Isn’t that right?

Who finished Verlander’s game?
Hinch’s use of the pen is confusing.
-
Giles did, but not in a save opp. Since his May 30th save against the Yanks he’s not been used in a save situation while Harris and Devenski have both blown saves and himself and Peacock have collected three losses.
The Yankees undoubtedly by now are just licking their chops whenever the Astros late-inning close-game guys come in. Scary place to be against a team likely to be one of your regular playoff opponents for the foreseeable future, and it seems to me it’s largely on Hinch.

Don’t lie. You were happy to see Devenski in there last night. I was, but the leadoff walk killed us all.
The larger issue for me is the bullpen plan.

Hand to God: I wasn’t. This team has 7 blown saves and Ken Giles has none of them.
The bullpen plan is confounding indeed.

The 21 pitch outing in the Cole loss killed his availability last night.

9 games, 9 saves, 0 earned runs.
11 games, 0 save opportunities, 9 runs.

Giles didn't get a blown save the other night against the Indians because he came in with a 5-run lead. But his inability to close out that game is just as much to blame as Rondon's and McHugh's, both of whom *did* get blown saves.

I agree. But there's a clear pattern here: Giles thrives as a Tony LaRussa style closer, and doesn't thrive in any other capacity. He's misused in non-save opportunities. Let Rondon/McHugh etc. make it a save opp and possibly he closes the door.

Every closer struggles in non-save situations.

Yes, some more than others. It seems clear that they should default to Giles only and always in save opportunities. While that’s contrary to the ascendant mode, it’s probably the way to wring the most value out of Giles.
