And the starter cruised thru the first apparently with a bum elbow.

I agree with Jim. When your starter goes out and gives you 8 shutout innings and 14 punchouts, you have to win that game. You HAVE to!

The bad thing is, this is not the first great pitching performance we have wasted this year. Half of Cole’s starts have turned out this way as well. I understand the crowd that says it’s not time to panic. Yes I know we set or tied the franchise record for best start in 30 games. I get all of that. But the issue is, this team is not winning a playoff series the way it is currently constructed. I can deal somewhat with the issues in left field and the lack of production there. But what I cannot handle anymore is the lack of production from the DH spot in our order. That has to be fixed and it has to be fixed soon. If your designated hitter is struggling to hit 200, then you have a problem my friends. If you don’t want to bring up Kyle Tucker yet, then fine. But JD Davis has hit 391 since you sent him back to AAA. Bring him up and give him the AB’s at DH and put Gattis on the bench.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That’s fine but who goes down to call up Davis?
(My answer is Sipp, but management seems committed to 13 pitchers.)

You don't get to carry 26 players, so somebody has to leave to make room for Davis. If that's Gattis, he'll probably have to be DFA'ed, which means you probably won't ever see him again. I'm not sure who has options remaining, but it's probably not any of the folks we're talking about needing to replace. I suspect the front office is waiting for an injury to make that move for them.

Coming into the season Lunhow et al. knew that the roster at the end of game 162 would not be identical to the opening day roster. But you can't take a turn at the fork in the road until you arrive at the fork in the road.
Trade season is still a ways off. They've got a timeline for Tucker (apparently). And the as someone else pointed out not many guys with options left to shuffle the deck with.
Now, if only they can still win 2 out of 3 games while all this settles out.
(Don't take the above as me thinking everything is all right; the problems with the roster are there for all to see)
-

He literally wanted to beat Verlander to the punch.

Our at-bats were less than our best tonight. We didn't have our best night offensively. Whether that was against Montgomery or whether that was against a bullpen we haven't seen a ton is irrelevant.- Hinch
*In 14 away games the Astros are hitting .280/.366/.441 (an .807 OPS).
In 17 home games the Astros are hitting .230/.305/.368 (a .673 OPS).
Verlander on going back out for the 9th:
It's just kind of that one 30-second break where mentally I thought I was done and I didn't think it was right to kind of re-engage and say 'No, no, no let's go back out there.'
His Game Score of 96 is the highest for an Astro since Mike Fiers' no-hitter of the 2015 Dodgers recorded a 94. It's the highest for Verlander since his 92 on August 26, 2015 against Anaheim.

I was and am more pissed than disappointed. Lack of effort does that to me. If Hinch ever gets angry, last night was the perfect time for it.
-
Lack of effort does that to me.
You say this about the hitters, but then defy anyone to say Giles is gutless. I don't see how the two comments can be reconciled.

I cannot understand it for you. Lack of effort and gutless are two completely different things.
-
The Astros gave away AB after AB last night.
The Marwin tap out to the pitcher was a good example of giving in to the pitcher. That pitch was too close to take, but it needed to be fouled off. Instead he manged to roll over on it.
So I would argue that yes Marwin was trying, no he's not gutless, but you need to be dialed in and ready to spoil pitches if you want to get one you can drive.
The fact that the Yankees did a good job of getting first pitch curves for strikes makes the above more important.
-
I cannot understand it for you. Lack of effort and gutless are two completely different things.
You don't need to understand anything for me, but perhaps you could better explain your comments. You easily question the reigning MVP's professional effort, but you are positive about the strength of Giles character.
-

Watch the games, and infer what you will. I’ll do the same.
-
I wonder if they are trying way too hard to live up to the hype in front of the home crowd. Or perhaps more specifically their trying too hard to bring game 5 vaunting to the ballpark every night.

-
I would have walked him too.
Walking him would have absolutely been the right call. The worst thing you can do there is throw a strike, if you're going to pitch to him, make him expand. Idk if that was the plan and Giles missed his spot or if the plan was to attack. If the plan was attack then it was a terrible plan in that spot.

Stumbled across this article. It's comparing runners on 2nd/3rd vs 1st and 3rd. The interesting part in the context of last night:
In the 2017 season, when pitchers had runners on second and third, they intentionally walked the next hitter 163 times in 1852 opportunities
https://deadspin.com/this-quirk-of-baseball-strategy-is-infuriating-1825695434 (https://deadspin.com/this-quirk-of-baseball-strategy-is-infuriating-1825695434)
I would have thought the percentage would have been higher. Likely the numbers change in later innings.

The number of outs in the inning factor in too. The number of "opportunities" does not seem to specify how many outs there are. If there are 2 outs you're less likely to walk the hitter whereas if there's 1 out, the percentage would rise I'm sure. If you isolated the data to 7th inning or later of a tight game and less than 2 outs I bet the percentage would be much much higher
