T1:
Springer walks
Bregman strikes out swinging
Altuve singles to CF, Springer to 2B
Correa bounces into 6-4-3 double play on the first pitch
No score.
-
Keuchel already in a battle of wills with HPU.
-
Well, after I-don't-know-how-many-years, hitters seem to be learning how to out-wait Keuchel.
-
B1:
Dozier slow roller to 3B... Bregman with a nice barehanded play, ruled out, but Twins challenging, and overturned. Davis was in bad position at 1B and may have cost an out.
Mauer...full count...walks, Dozier to 2B
Sano...full count...chops one over the mound, only play is to 1B...4-3...Dozier to 3B, Mauer to 2B
Escobar...infield in...sac fly to RF...Dozier scores, Mauer to 3B
Grossman doubles to LCF, Mauer scores
Morrison...full count...grounds out 6-3
2-0 Twins
-
Giving up 2 in the first must seem like a mountain to climb for this offense right now.

Finally.
What happened on the Bregman play? Just beat the throw or was there another issue?

Combination of that and being just slightly off with control. If he wants the low strike call, he’s got to hit that spot really consistently, he just doesn’t seem to be doing that.

Nevermind. Saw the pbp. Thanks HH.

Really close play. Davis got his feet a little out of whack, was at the back of the bag, and didn't get a good stretch. If he's one or two inches closer, it's an out and no runs score.
-
Astros just missing really good pitches to hit.
-
Jake with a RBI single!
-
Jake!
-
T2:
Reddick with a leadoff walk
Marwin flies out F8
McCann flies out F9
Davis...full count...walks, Reddick to 2B
Marisnick...3-0...3-1...singles to LF, Reddick scores, Davis to 3B
Springer...0-2...stikes out swinging
Astros leave a pair, but cut the lead in half. 2-1 Twins
-
Ok. That’s enough of ALCS George.
-
Ok. That’s enough of ALCS George.
Yeah, George seems to be swinging harder and harder as things get worse and worse. Hopefully the light will go on soon.
-
Twins with bases juiced, one out...
-
Dallas got none of the borderline calls. Hope the Astros get the same leeway.
-
Time to get McHugh up

Keuchel walks in a run...he's getting squeezed a bit, and he's hitting his spots, but just refuses to bring it up an inch...
-
Dallas got none of the borderline calls. Hope the Astros get the same leeway.
Ump hasn't given that low, outside (to RH hitter) corner to either pitcher.
-
Dallas is totally getting squeezed. Good God.
-

To be fair, a lot of those borderline pitches were just outside the zone. Keuchel has to get more of the zone.
-
B2:
Garver singles up the middle
Buxton...full count...grounds to 2B, perfect double play ball, but...shift on...Marwin eventually gets to it on the infield, but no play...Garver to 2B
Lamarre strikes out swinging
Dozier...3-0...walks, Garver to 3B, Buxton to 2B
Mauer...3-1...walks, Garver scores, Buxton to 3B, Dozier to 2B
Sano...0-2...1-2...2-2...strikes out on a check swing...Kalas thinks the inning is over, but it's only the second out.
Escobar...0-2...grounds into FC, Mauer out 5-4 at 2B
3-1 Twins
-

He's pretty much putting the ball where he wants. But he's not getting the call, and continues to throw the same pitch over and over.
-
Dallas did well to get out of that inning. Let's see if we can get something back.
-
Kalas cannot keep track of the count or the outs to save his life. Does he not write this shit down?
-
I hope Hoyt is rested.
-
Sit on one, Marwin!
-
T3:
Bregman...3-0...3-1...walks
Altuve hammers one to 3B...Sano takes it off the chest, regroups, finds the ball and throws out Altuve by a hair, Bregman to 2B
Correa pops out F3 in foul territory
Reddick...3-1...walks
Marwin...0-2...pops out F6
Astros leave a pair...again. 3-1 Twins
-
So we've turned 5 walks and 2 hits into 1 run.
-
B3:
Grossman grounds out 5-3 on the first pitch
Morrison singles to CF on the first pitch, raising his season batting average to .080
Garver...0-2...1-2...2-2...strikes out looking
Buxton grounds into FC on the first pitch...Morrison out 6-4 at 2B
3-1 Twins
-
Finally a zero in the bottom of a frame.
-
Blum: “The strike zone is more like a mail slot than the actual strike zone.”
-
T4:
McCann pops out F5 in foul territory
Davis singles to RF on the first pitch
Marisnick...0-1 on an attempted bunt at a pitch that would have hit him in the face...strike...ball...strikes out swinging
Springer...0-2...grounds out 5-3
3-1 Twins
-
Was the Jake bunt attempt against a shifted infield?

Baseball is alright but "fireworks to country music" holy shit!

B4:
Lamarre strikes out swinging
Dozier...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...walks

Sano taps up the 3B line...Keuchel over, but whiffs at it...E1, Dozier to 2B
Escobar strikes out swinging, 2-3 on the putout

-
2017 wasn’t that long ago.
My thoughts exactly. Plenty of baseball left.
-
Whew.
Keuchel already at 101 pitches?
-
Wtf, Bregman?!
-
Bregman needs to get his head out of his ass.

Last night may have been the tightest strike zone for Keuchel I have ever seen. I am amazed he did not explode and get tossed.
I know “it is early,” yada yada, but the strikeout graphic pointed out vividly what is wrong with the lineup in the early going.
-
*For the third time in five games the Astros were held without an extra-base hit and went 1x6 w/RISP. Carlos Correa was 0x4 with 2 GIDPs.

Agree Jim. In the first inning Dallas’ first pitch to Mauer was PERFECT! It was a pitch that as a hitter I would want thrown to me, and the HPU called it a ball. Dallas did ask where it was and I can’t believe after the way things went that he held his cool.
The strikeout graphic you mentioned was enlightening to say the least. What troubles me so much is that the issues are pretty much team wide. Too many fastballs are being taken early in the count to fall behind and then they chase spin. It’s almost like there has been a philosophical change the team has made towards hitting, but I’m sure that isn’t the case. Opposing teams are attacking us differently and that is probably the root of all of this. I just know that with the possible exception of Reddick, no one looks comfortable at the plate. Our batters are ducking out of the way from breaking balls and letting fastballs go by and immediately turn and look at the ump like a little leaguer in hopes he doesn’t call it a strike. Not time to panic yet but it is damn frustrating to watch.

Part of me is not displeased with Keuchel’s early struggles. Maybe now he will STFU and pitch.

Trying to pull everything?

I thought Keuchel showed remarkable restraint last night and was surprised the ump didn't have a wider zone due to the weather. A hurry-up and get the hell outta here approach.
