Surprised to see both Mathis and Dawson here. I thought Dawson would be in CC and that Mathis would be behind Matijevic. Maybe a playing time issue? We'll see pretty soon, I guess.
-
Hector Perez with a masterful game: 5 IP, 2 H, 10 K, 1 BB
-
Corbin Martin last night: 6 IP, 2H, 3BB, 0R, 6K. ERA stands at 0.00 through 2 starts. He's picking up right where he left off last season.

Happy to see the organizations top pitching prospects (after Whitely of course) are off to good starts.
-
Dawson led off the game with a walk and was pulled for a pinch runner. Anyone know the story?

I might, if the BC website ever posted game stories... so baffling/frustrating. Their twitter account had nothing about Dawson.
On the bright side, Corbin Martin and Brett Adcock tandemed a 1-hit shutout with 14 Ks.
-
Corbin Martin is pretty good.
-
I have not seen an announcement, by Matijevic shows up on the BC roster today. He has been raking at QC.

He was on the DL for about 2 weeks. Didn't miss a beat when he returned.

Even picked up the pace. Looking forward to seeing him at Hi A.
-
Orlando Marquez has joined BC from extended spring training.
Might not be related, but highly regarded catching prospect Chuckie Robinson is struggling (.155/.241/.225) and Carlos Canelon is also below the Mendoza line. Robinson is at least throwing out base runners at a 56% clip.
-
Matijevic getting some love. (https://www.milb.com/milb/news/toolshed-houston-astros-prospect-jj-matijevic-blasting-off/c-278165408)
"...it's like you're facing a Friday guy every day of the week."
This is something a lot of fans don't understand. If you know college baseball you know what he's talking about. Nearly every school throws their best pitcher in the first game of the weekend series.

Tyler Ivey promoted from QC

Matijevic and Corbin Martin were the two picks the Astros got from the Cards due to the hacking scandal, right? It would be especially gratifying to see them turn into good major leaguers.

With the same caveats as my write-up on Quad Cities, here is my summary of the Creekstros May.
Buies Creek slumped to 13-15 in May after a 16-8 start in April. Losing key contributors like Corbin Martin and Josh Rojas to promotions was only part of the difference, however. Details ...
Catcher: Carlos Canelon caught more than half the games in May as Chuckie Robinson spent time on the DL. Together they hit .195 with only 4 extra base hits and 32 K against 9 BB. And that was a huge improvement over their combined April. Robinson has thrown out 61% of potential base-stealers this year, though, even as his offensive performance has tanked.
Utility: This team has featured two future 'Marwins' ... Osvaldo Duarte (.282/.310/.409 in May) split time equally between LF and SS in May after a nearly equal split between LF and 2B in April. Kristian Trompiz (.200/.288/.215) saw time at all four infield positions in May. Both improved at the plate for the month, but with the just-announced promotions of Jake Adams and Jonathan Arauz, I expect reduced playing time in June (at least for Trompiz).
Middle Infield: Anibal Sierra posted a torrid .179/.304/.385 slash line from the SS position before his mid-month promotion to CC. He is obviously not being pushed up the line by his bat. Switch-hitting Alfredo Angarita (only 21) was the regular at 2B after joining the team at the end of April and hit a respectable .267/.320/.311.
Corner Infield: Abe Toro-Hernandez (only 21) is the regular at 3B and slashed .267/.358/.448 in May. leading the team with 20 runs, 7 doubles, 4 home runs (tied) and 15 walks. He also tied for the lead in errors. Troy Sieber got most of the starts at 1B and slumped to .221/.307/.299 for the month while more than doubling his K-rate. With Jake Adams joining the team, I expect Troy to feel some pressure.
Outfield: JJ Matijevic took over in LF after his promotion and has raked ... .312/.329/.597 with a team-high 3 triples and tied with Toro with 4 home runs in just 82 plate appearances. He has struck out 26 times, though, so there is that. Ronnie Dawson has been the regular in CF, but has not really gotten untracked offensively. He slashed just .231/.292/.385 with a team-leading 32 K in 104 AB, though he also had 4 home runs and led the team in RBI (19), SB (9) and CS (5). Chas McCormick has been the regular in RF all year putting up a .218/.310/.409 slash line in May (after .291/.367/.405 in April). At 23, Chas just got the call to AA, and it will be interesting to see if he can meet the challenge there. 4th outfielder Luis Payano hit .341/.431/.455 in limited playing time, and I expect him to get more opportunities in June.
Rotation: The Creekstros were dominant in April with an overall 2.09 ERA, 1.035 WHIP and over 11 K/9 as a staff. Their May performance (4.43, 1.333, 9.5) goes a long way towards explaining the teams swoon. Brett Adcock (2-2, 2.54, 0.988 and a team-high 30K) and the recently promoted Jorge Alcala (1-1, 2.57, 0.810) did their part, but the rest of the rotation struggled. Brandon Bielak (1-1, 3.72, 1.138), Abdiel Saldana (2-0, 3.93, 1.364) and Hector Perez (1-1, 5.87, 1.391) all doubled their April ERA. Brandon Bailey (1-3, 3.91, 1.500) lost all control with 19 BB and 9 WP in only 25.1 IP. But the "winner" was Carson LaRue, who followed up a 1-0, 0.46, 0.763 April with a 2-2, 7.20, 1.640 May allowing 8 home runs in the process. Gabriel Valdez (1-2, 5.50, 1.778 in 2 starts and 4 relief appearances) returned from the DL to add fuel to the fire. He appears to be joining the rotation as a regular in June, to be joined by the recently promoted Tyler Ivey.
Bullpen: 24-year-old southpaw, Kit Scheetz, was the bullpen standout, posting a 0.93 ERA to go with a WHIP of 0.879 and a 25:1 K:BB ratio in 19.1 IP. He also earned the save in all three games he finished and has recently been promoted to AA. Ronel Blanco (1.35 ERA with a 0.675 WHIP) also pitched well. Jesus Balaguer (7.59, 1.500) and Colin McKee (12.79, 2.842 after being promoted from Quad Cities) got banged around pretty badly and other newcomers Tanner Duncan and Robert Corniel had limited opportunities. Similarly, Carlos Sierra and Justin Ferrell were promoted to CC early in the month before accumulating much in the way of meaningful stats.
-
Thanks for this VB.
The pitching is where the talent is at BC. The main position player to watch is Matijevic. But keep an eye on Toro (he dropped Hernandez) and Dawson.
With the promotion I expect Adams's K rate to skyrocket.
How Arauz performs will definitely be worth watching.

Dated news from a couple of days ago but Brandon Bielak (3rd in the league in WHIP), Brett Adcock (4th in WHIP), Abraham Toro and Ronnie Dawson all named to the CL South all star squad.
And Cristian Javier threw a hitless 6 innings in his 2018 BC debut last night.
From the milb.com game recap:
"He has a really unique fastball," [pitching coach Drew] French said. "The way he uses it and is able to pitch at the top of the zone, it's really unique to A-ball. His fastball plays well. The deception along with the shape of it really gives him the opportunity to miss barrels and get over bats for swings and misses and strikeouts." Javier added a changeup to his repertoire, and the results have been evident. "It's more or less not what he doesn't do but what he does well," French said. "He locates his fastball and his off-speed pitches are for strikes. He manages the game like a big leaguer. The only thing that's different this year is his physicality. He's stronger and his velocity is better. The use of his changeup though is the difference-maker. He would deem it his fourth pitch, but he used it 16-18 times in the game and had good control of it." "I've been working on it throughout the season," Javier added. "But today, I had that extra confidence that I could use it in any count and any batter."

I just want to say that this is really detailed/useful/interesting information (the quotes from the BC pitching coach). I don't skim through the writeups from Milb.com, but is it common for them to give out this quality of info, or is this article an outlier?

More an outlier, in my experience.

Javier is certainly a youngster to keep an eye on. Pitching at the top of the zone....a good change. That sounds like the Strom/Luhnow type of guy.

Troy Sieber was released.

Not surprised ...
With Jake Adams joining the team, I expect Troy to feel some pressure.

Last year, MILB started using stringers to write the game stories instead of having team employees doing it. So hopefully, this will improve the quality of the game reports.
-
Nice month thus far for Abe Toro--.295/.403/.590.
-
OF Luis Payano was released. Was hitting .269/.350/.338 this season. Signed for a $500K bonus back in 2012.
-
Buies Creek's Hector Perez threw a CGSHO against Myrtle Beach yesterday: 7IP, 7H/0ER, 8K:0BB. Perez's last four outings: 20.2IP, 11H/2ER, 27K:6BB.
-
At age 21, 3B Abe Toro among Carolina League leaders in doubles (1st), homers (3rd) and OPS (9th).

Another shiny outing tonight for Javier (7 scoreless, 8 Ks).
Over his last 9 games (QC & BC combined): 47.1 IP, 19 hits, 64 Ks, 15 BBs, 0.72 WHIP, 0.95 ERA.
-
Four scoreless frames for Patrick Sandoval in Carolina League debut.
-
RHP Ronel Blanco (0.99 WHIP, 41 Ks in 36 IP) moves up to CC. RHP Yohan Ramirez comes up from QC to take his spot.
-
Osvaldo Duarte:
Apr .212/.253/.341
May .298/.331/.421
Jun .289/.362/.494
And 7-12 to start off July.
Currently on a 9-game hitting streak in which he's batting .472.

Yeah. I was looking at that today and thinking he had come out of his 2017 slump. He was moving toward “prospect” the previous year. Maybe again? He does a pretty good “Marwin” when he is on.
-
Four scoreless frames for Patrick Sandoval in Carolina League debut.
More zeros tonight with a near-perfect 5 innings. 83 whiffs vs just 11 walks in 74 combined IP this year between QC and BC.
Also, now 25 innings since last allowing a run and 34 IP since allowing an earned run.
-
10 straight scoreless innings for lefty Adcock. Just 3 hits allowed.
Obviously extremely limited sample size but LHHs batting just .042 off him this year.
Now if he could just work on those walks...
-
6' 4" righty Tyler Ivey out of Grayson Juco in 16 outings between QC and BC this season: 84 whiffs vs 18 walks in 71.2 IP with 59 hits allowed.
FB touching 95 was the (now-dated) scouting report when he was drafted last year. Solid changeup, said Callis.
Scouted/signed by Jim Stevenson (Dallas Keuchel, Josh James, Dean Deetz, Riley Ferrell, Parker Mushinski, Justin Ferrell, the Quebecois pair Abraham Toro and Jonathan Lacroix, Ramon Laureano).

27th rounder (2017) LHP Adam Bleday, who never could find the plate, gets his walking papers.
-
Cali boy Patrick Sandoval just keeps eating. So recapping/updating:
- 91 whiffs vs just 13 walks in 81 combined IP this year between QC and BC.
- Now 32 innings since last allowing a run.
- And 41 IP since allowing an earned run.

Anybody know Sandoval's pitching style? Power, control, crafty? I know he's a southpaw and doesn't show up on the Top 30 Astros prospect lists.

In his own words:
PS: “I throw a 4-Seam Fastball (89-93) Change-up (low 80s) Curveball (low 70s) Slider (81-84). As of right now I think may best pitch to LHH would be my slider, although, it still needs some work. I would love to get the veto up on it just a tick. As for RHH, I think my most effective pitch would be my curveball. I am still working on being able to land it in the zone consistently.”

I wonder how long the org will put up with Larue getting bombed every outing. 5 rubs on 8 hits in 4 IP today for his eleventy-fifth bad outing in a row.

OF Jake Meyers (13th rounder last year and 2015-17 Cornhusker teammate of this year's 9th round pick Scott Schreiber) over his last 14 games: .357/.463/.571 w/10 walks vs 5 whiffs.
-
RHP Enoli Paredes gets the promotion from the River Bandits.
-
Short righty Brandon Bailey with 17 straight scoreless innings. Currently 5th in the CL in ERA and 10th in WHIP. His 10.4 K/9 tops the league but is down from last year (in the A's organization) when it was 11.9 and his walk rate has risen substantially (4.4 BB/9 this season vs 3.1 in 2017).
Fellow RHP Gabriel Valdez for BC this season:
1st 6 appearances--18 IP / 15 BB / 12 K
Last 9 appearances--31.1 IP / 6 BB / 28 K
-
10-inning one-hitter is the 16th shutout for BC hurlers this year (next highest in the league with 11 is Myrtle Beach). #1 in ERA, WHIP and of course KKKKKKKKKKKKKKs.

Biggest strikeout game tonight (13 Ks, 7 IP) of his young career. 27/1 K/BB over his last 3 outings (16 IP).
104 Ks vs 19 BBs in 82.2 IP w/67 hits allowed on the year.
-
This system really is filled with intriguing, under-the-radar pitchers. I guess the analytics stuff they're focusing on lends itself more to improving pitcher performance than hitter.

It seems like a ton have had the radar this year. Particularly from the Latin America ranks.

Chuckie Robinson's bat finally showing signs of life: over his last 14 games, he's batting .367/.426/.694 with 4 homers. Remains strong at throwing out baserunners, nabbing 61% this year after tossing out 41% in 2017.
J.J. Matijevic's stick unfortunately is going in the opposite direction:
May: .313/.326/.588
June: .269/.355/.448
July: .153/.219/.271
-
2 HRs today for Matijevic, hopefully he's coming out of his month-long funk.

Yikes.
MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline 1h ago
3rd multi-HR game of the year for @bcreekastros' J.J. Matijevic. Both HR off righties. His R/L splits this year:
Vs. LHP: 9-for-59, .152/.235/.203, 0 HR, 2 RBI
Vs. RHP: 63-for-199, .317/.372/.613, 13 HR, 31 RBI
#Astros' No. 24 prospect.

RHP Peter Solomon gets the call from QC.

With MLB Pipeline having added him to the Top 30 Prospects list, we now have an updated scouting report:
"Ivey's primary pitches are a 90-95 mph fastball with riding life and a curveball that can be a plus pitch at times. His breaking stuff regressed when he was at Grayson, but he has regained depth on his curve and sharpened his hard slider since turning pro. He also has an effective changeup, giving him four average-or-better offerings."
-
Short righty Brandon Bailey with 17 straight scoreless innings.
Now up to 23 scoreless. Allowed 16 hits while whiffing 26 during that stretch. More importantly, has handed out just 4 BBs during this stretch. That compares to the 38 walks in his first 66 IP this season.
-
Cali boy Patrick Sandoval just keeps eating. So recapping/updating:
- 91 whiffs vs just 13 walks in 81 combined IP this year between QC and BC.
- Now 32 innings since last allowing a run.
- And 41 IP since allowing an earned run.
And now back to California for a catcher.
-
Cristian Javier now with 119 Ks on the season (in 90 IP), which I believe is second among Astros' minor leaguers this year. Josh James leads with 139.
-
Tyler Ivey has already gotten one promotion this season and might be angling for another. 35 Ks and just 3 BBs over his last 22 innings. His numbers in 10 games in the Carolina League (0.96 WHIP, .189 BAA) are better than those he put up in 9 games in the MWL (1.06 WHIP, .221 BAA).
-
Beer and Bukauskas up from QC.

After today's 8 shutout frames, Brandon Bailey now has thrown 31 straight scoreless innings while surrendering just 17 hits. His K/BB during the stretch is 34/5. As noted above, walks are down dramatically after giving up 38 free passes in his first 66 IP this season.

I've been kinda pulling for Bailey since I read, and posted, this https://brandonbailey1994.com/2018/03/20/fastball-curveball-slider-change/
back in S-T. That piece really humanized him for me and what a young ballplayer experiences.

RHP Enoli Paredes gets the promotion from the River Bandits.
Going back to his time at QC, over his last 39.2 IP has an 0.45 ERA with 51/10 K to BB while allowing just 16 hits.
Overall on the season (63 innings), still hasn't allowed a HR.
-
JJ Matijevic hitting .294/.419/.745 over his last 15 games with 7 longballs (including 4 HRs in last 5 games).

Did he show up in the Carolina League?
I wish he would. Anywhere but Houston.

JB Bukauskas with his most solid outing of the year: 7 IP / 1 H / 0 R / 1 BB / 5 K. In his last 8 appearances, just 21 hits allowed in 35.2 IP with 39 Ks and 10 BBs.
Josh Norris of BA said he was sitting 93-95 on the FB. He was facing tonight a really stacked lineup of White Sox prospects including Luis Robert (#3), Nick Madrigal (#4), Blake Rutherford (#7), Luis Gonzalez (#14), Gavin Sheets (#15) and Laz Rivera (#28).
-
So good to see him doing well. I want to see or hear about his slider.
I wonder if he gets a chance at CC in the next two weeks.
-
RHP Peter Solomon gets the call from QC.
Over his last 11 outings (8 with QC, 3 with BC): 49.1 IP, 34 H, 8 BB, 55 K, 1.64 ERA, 1.89 BAA. Obviously has benefited from improved control over that stretch--in his first 41.1 innings this year he walked 21.
-
Chuckie Robinson, the resurgence (last 25 games): .364/.417/.614.
-
39th-rounder (2017) INF Colton Shaver moves up from QC where he was batting .223/.307/.422 with 15 homers.

And again. Tonight 5IP, 2H, 4BB, 7K, 0R. Control problems today, 91 pitches, but shutout stuff.
-
39th-rounder (2017) INF Colton Shaver moves up from QC where he was batting .223/.307/.422 with 15 homers.
And kicks things off with a 2-for-3 night including s 2-run bomb. Welcome to Carolina!
-
24-year old reliever RHP Colin McKee since May 24 (17 games): 26.2 IP / 21 H / 9 BB / 38 K / 1.69 ERA.
-
Reliever RHP Brendan Feldmann up from QC. 4th affiliate he's pitched for this season.
-
Bukauskas to CC? No offsetting move announced w/ the Feldmann promotion and BC now is one over the roster limit and has 14 pitchers. JB would slot in nicely with the Hooks with Dykxhoorn back to Fresno.
Just spekalatin'.
-
OF Corey Julks trying to end the season on an up note: .328/.361/.567 in his last 17 games with 3 HRs and 7 doubles.

Yikes.
MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline 1h ago
3rd multi-HR game of the year for @bcreekastros' J.J. Matijevic. Both HR off righties. His R/L splits this year:
Vs. LHP: 9-for-59, .152/.235/.203, 0 HR, 2 RBI
Vs. RHP: 63-for-199, .317/.372/.613, 13 HR, 31 RBI
#Astros' No. 24 prospect.
2 more homers yesterday, both against righties, giving him 20 pokes on the year. Those splits updated:
Vs. LHP: 12-for-82, .146/.242/.220, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .462 OPS
Vs. RHP: 80-for-253, .316/.387/.648, 19 HR, 47 RBI, 1.036 OPS
I'm not sure I've ever seen splits that wide.

Ron Blomberg and Rich Becker were two that came to mind, but looking them up neither were close to that wide. The good news for JJ is there’s more RHP in the majors than LHP. If he keeps murdering righties he might be able to carve out a niche for himself.

José Hernandez with a gem tonight. Complete game on 88 pitches. Scattered 8 hits and no walks vs. 5 K. 2 unearned runs gave him the 2-1 loss.

Wrongly, of course (milb.com still has never reflected the offsetting roster move). Bukauskas for BC today wasn't at this best with too many walks (4) in 5 IP though he whiffed 8. He also gave up a gopher ball, just his first allowed in 53 innings this year.

Looks like his offense bailed him out with 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st and he settled down after that.
-
21-year old RF Bryan De La Cruz in August: .317/.403/.429. But as you can see from those numbers the lack of pop remains disappointing: zip homers in 48 games for BC and just 2 in 113 games including his work at QC.

Scouting report on him from 2080Baseball https://2080baseball.com/reports/jose-hernandez/. Low 90s FB, above average CB. The takeaway:
"Profiles as long reliever or low-leverage middleman able to pitch numerous innings. Older and more polished arm dominating younger hitters in A-Ball, looks ready for next level."
-
LaRue thinks you should hold your opinion for a while. 5.2IP, 1 ER, 8K tonight.
Walks aren't where you want 'em to be but otherwise has been pretty darn good since that game: 31.2 IP, 20 H, 14 BB, 31 K, 1.70 ERA.

Beer Man serves up his 11th homer of the year.

OF Jake Meyers, who was a 2-way player in his U of Nebraska days, finished up on the mound tonight with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Foamer #12 on the season for Beer.
-
Guy’s just a couple sixers short of a case.
-
Abdiel Saldana tossed 6 innings of 2-run ball and Enoli Paredes got the save by whiffing 3 in his 1 IP (a solo shot was mixed in there) as BC took the playoff opener 5-4 against prospect-laden (and best record in the Carolina League) Winston-Salem.

Good stuff out of the Buies Creek #Astros pen to shut it down. Enoli Paredes K’d side w 3 chases on SL 83-85.

He was 93-95 tonight (late season) left one up that #WhiteSox Ti’Quan Forbes didn’t miss. Should see again this series. #Astros DeJuneas t96, SL dope at 88-89; he’s my pref after 1st looks.
(1st part of that 2nd tweet is also referencing Paredes)

Best offense in the Carolina League? Fuck that, says the BC staff, as they shut down Winston-Salem for a second straight game. This time it was Jose Hernandez who gives up just 1 run on 4 hits over 7 1/3 while K'ing 9. Colin McKee then sets down all 5 batters he faced, 3 on strikeouts.
Corey Julks hit .305/.373/.543 over his last 27 regular season games with 10 doubles and 5 homers. He's continued that hot hitting into the playoffs, with a 2-run HR to lead the offense in the 3-1 win. BC has a chance to close out the semifinal series tomorrow night.
ETA:
Jose Hernandez over his last 5 starts:
- 32.2 IP
- 27 Hits
- 0 BBs (yep, zip)
- 32 Ks
- 1.65 ERA

Ensberg said Julks’ transformation is the result of a retooling of his swing that began in 2017 while the manager and player were at Tri-City. “The improvements that he has made from last year to this year are huge,” Ensberg said. “He was a guy that had a very steep swing because that was the brand of ball he was taught in college. Now to see him being on-plane, to see his hips move and the way his swing has really adapted due to the hard work is really incredible and now he’s a legitimate threat.”

Becomes the 2nd Astros' club to advance to a league championship as they sweep that impressive Winston-Salem team with a 6-5 win tonight. Tyler Ivey was the hero as he shut down the daunting Dash offense with 5.2 innings of no-hit ball to start off the game. Finished with 7.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K with one of the runs charged to him an inherited runner that following pitcher Carlos Sanabria allowed to score. Offensively, all the BC runs came on HRs with Seth Beer, Osvaldo Duarte, Jake Adams and Cody Bohanek all doing the deed.

Very cool. Loved the colorful quotes from Ensberg in the article.
By the way, have they announced what the team will be called next year when they move to Fayetteville?

Formal announcement on the 12th. Apparently people think it will either be Fatbacks or Woodpeckers.

Oh good lord. Either would be terrible, obviously, and they've already got a team called the Wood Ducks in the league. They should just go back to being the Fayetteville Generals (owing to nearby Ft. Bragg) if that's the best they could come up with.

I've always found it interesting that the U.S.'s largest military installation is named after a Confederate General. And one of the least competent at that.

I always just assumed that it was a marine sign-painter who spelled it wrong.

Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Polk, Fort Benning, Fort Gordon, etc. It almost seems as if the number of installations named after Confederate generals outnumbers the ones named after Union generals.

Yes! BC wins 2-1 in the B11 to take the Carolina League title. Pitching was the star (duh) with Bryan Abreu and Colin McKee the most notable. Abreu (bumped up from QC for this game, his 2nd promotion of the year) went 4 scoreless allowing just 2 baserunners and whiffing 5 while McKee blanked Potomac over the final 2 innings with 4 punchouts. 1B Jake Adams was pretty much the one and only hitting hero, going 3-5 with a #jakebomb in the B8 to tie the score and being involved in the scoring of the winning run in the 11th with a single.
2 championships this year thus far with Fresno still in a hunt for a 3rd.

Delayed announcement made today: it's the Woodpeckers.
