Verlander looked good, no walks, no hits, 4 strikeouts in two innings.
Kyle Tucker is looking really good this spring. Hit a homer to LCF. His swing is a beautiful thing and he has power to all fields. Any chance he makes opening day?
J.D. Davis is hitting the ball well so far too.
-
Stassi hit his 2nd HR of the Spring. Also he just hit a RBI double to put the Astros ahead 8-7 going into the 9th.
-
McCurry leaves the bases loaded to close out the Mets. In the other game the Astros are getting hammered 11-0 (split squad) against the Marlins.

That's what I figure too. Early June at best, providing he is tearing it up in the minors.

I would not expect him until late in the season, maybe even September, unless there is a massive implosion among the incumbents.

After 2 innings Astros lead the Mets 5-0. Astros now batting in the top of the 3rd.

Astros pick up another run in the third. Lead 6-0. Peacock allowed 1 hit, walked two and struck out 3 in his two innings of work. Devo pitching the third.

He gave up at least 1.

Rain just finished with nothing upstream (yet). Hopefully drainage is good on the field as it was a gully washer.
-
He gave up at least 1.
It was a run scoring groundout in a driving rain on an 81mph batting practice FB. They left him in to get the final out on a K. Hate to see that, too risky regarding injuries. Was glad to see Devo not trying to do too much except get off the field.
Edited to add: credit where credit is due, the Mets swung at everything to try to hurry the inning along. 11 pitches with 10 swings, including two 3-pitch strikeouts and two other first pitch hits. Good for them.
-
This is what we did not like about ST in Florida. We lost at least one game to rain each trip and sometimes more. We have lost games to weather in AZ too, but it is very rare.

Armenteros looked great again, and, for my money, Gary Cohen does the best TV PBP this side of Jon Miller.

McCullers went 2 innings, 0 runs, 2 hits and 3 Ks. Springer, Altuve each 2 for 2. Couple of Astros errors and a RBI single for Correa. 2-1 Twins mid-4.

It was the TV broadcast.
And it was just sort of scattershooting everything from Bagwell's year last year being elected in to the HOF to him and Blum reminiscing about when Blum came over from Montreal with dyed red hair.

Blum was and is in awe of Bagwell.
-
Blum said it's good they didn't count spring stats for Bagwell's career. He asked him why he only had one good spring, his first. He said other than '91, he never really worked too hard until the last 2 weeks of spring training. Said he had to ramp his swing up over time and took extra batting practice late in the spring to get ready.
-

A lot of what he said he had said in his HOF speech. Spoke of being generous with clubhouse personnel around the league. He learned early on, from Caminiti, to pick up dinner tabs, spoke of the greatness of Altuve, and what is approach had been to Spring Training. Clearly he loves this Astros bunch and how much fun they have when playing. Bunch of great guys he says. Wish I could add more but I was multi-tasking during that time preparing for a meeting.

Wouldn't the contract have something to do with it?
Perhaps, but Sparks said that the Astros feel that they've fixed Sipp's splitter, which would be great news.
-
Why? If he is pitching well, doesn’t that make sense?
If they really believed they’ve fixed him, it would explain to some extent not going hard after a lefty reliever.
-
Wouldn't the contract have something to do with it?
No
-
Both Sipp and Boshers pitched scoreless innings.
-
I'm watching Guduan right now, and he's not making Sipp or Boshers lose any sleep.
ETA: As soon as I type that, he snaps off several nasty-looking pitches in a row. That shows the talent that's so enticing, he just can't find the consistency.

Keuchel said he was going to cut off his beard if they won it all last year. Nevertheless, the beard persisted. What’s up? This strikes me as the sort of thing the baseball gods look upon unfondly.

Today's game against Mets is on MLBnet. Through One, it is 1-0 Mets. McHugh on the mound. Davis just made a very nice catch from 1B going in short RF with his back to the infield. The ball was right over his head which is a tougher play to make.
-
In a "B" game Morton has whiffed 5 Nats through 2.
-
Tucker with another HR. Solo shot, now 4-3 "Stros in the 7th. This was the longest HR Ted has hit this spring. The Mets announcers, which incl. Hernandez, talk about his unorthodox swing. Indeed on this HR he had a very long swing and ended up on one knee in the box. Jake continues to hit the ball hard. Doesn't have much to show for it today but he is getting good wood on ball.
-
Tucker just grounded out to 2b. If he had gotten loft on the ball it would have gone a long way. Sounded like a gunshot off of his bat. That long swing really generates bat speed.

Reed had 2 hits today. A double to left off a lefty who will either be in the Marlins' rotation or bullpen and a single to center off a AAA pitcher.
Sipp was awful against mostly minor leaguers and borderline major leaguers.

The Astros just overshifted on Jay Bruce by moving all four infielders to his pull side, leaving on one on the other side. Bruce keeps trying to go the other way but has been unsuccessful in two ABs. Psychological warfare in spring training, probably courtesy of Sig and the gang in analytics.

That would be hilarious if they did it during the regular season. Were there two guys in short right field, or what?

In a 6-1 win over Mets today in which Cole started against Syndargaard, Astros prevail 6-1. Cole was sharp 4 H and 1 R given in 4 IP. Cole whiffed 7. In relief Martes whiffed 5 in 2.1 scoreless frames. Martes allowed 1 H and 2 BBs. JD Davis is hitting .394 after his 2-3 today (singles).

He said he was working on some stuff and throwing pitches in counts that he wouldn't ordinarily throw. He also said the pitch that Carpenter hit out was a sh@t curveball. I didn't watch, so I don't know.

FYI, my scout friend is sending me daily reports from his organization’s scouts on the games they see. Fascinating reading. The scout following Houston said JV was not sharp, and velocity was down, but both homers were windblown. He guessed “mid-spring training dead arm.” He does not like what he sees from Fisher so I am feeling a tad vindicated in my opinion.

any particular thing about Fisher? I try not to put much stock in Spring stats but his K rate is high.

Long swing, slow bat, FBs eating him up.
The same scout said about Davis: “He can hit.”

I'm not going to do anything except hope that the Astros decision-makers and coaches do what they think will help him. I'm sure if they thought he was hopeless they would have traded him by now. Plenty of teams wanted him.

Other teams certainly did have interest before he came up and became a K machine. Do they now? I do not know. He can run but is not a good outfielder. He has pop but has trouble making contact. I would love to be wrong because he seems to be the designated bridge to Tucker, but I do not think I am. Scouts with no ax to grind and whose sole purpose in ST is to look for potential acquisitions do not like his swing.

Giles has a 0.00 ERA this spring. I'm not buying the Peacock thing. Not sure he could pitch 2-3 days in a row.
We don't talk McCullers around here much. Anyone notice that after 4.1 IP of scoreless tonight his spring ERA is under 1?
Fisher with a piss-poor night again tonight and Tucker's 1-3 puts him at .405. JD Davis HRd in win over Yanks.

I recall Giles getting shelled one game this spring. I don't think I dreamed it. Anyways, I can believe that management has this concern, most fans do and he had already lost his job in postseason last year.
Peacock seems like an interesting choice, although I can't immediately think of anyone else. Maybe Devo.

I just don’t think Fisher looks ready. I agree with your take about him not being a good outfielder. If he can’t hit then I’m not sure that his speed warrants him getting a spot on the roster. Wish we had signed Cargo but that is water under the bridge now.

No, his ERA is zero. No one is saying Peacock is the choice. I passed along a scout’s gossip.

If I recall correctly, there was one outing a couple weeks back where he gave up like 3 or 4 runs in one inning but they were all unearned runs. He’s looked pretty good this spring overall.

Good point. Peacock it is, then.

I don't know what to make of Fisher. He is clearly Luhnow's fair skulled boy but why is not apparent. His performance last year and this spring doesn't justify a spot on the major league roster much less the starting left fielder's job.

So, unearned runs are the pitcher’s fault. Got it.

The rule has been in place forever. I get that sometime the pitcher has to snap off something special to pick up a teammate. However, most unearned runs aren't the pitcher's fault. When you're forced to get more than three outs in an inning, sometimes fatigue gets you, and you make a mistake with a pitch, that does nothing but exacerbate the situation.

So, these two teams could not be more different. The Nats players are laughing, joking around and not taking things too seriously and the Astros are all business. Until it makes sense not to. For example, Correa busts out of the box on the chopper to first all the way down the line until the last few steps then pulls up so as to not collide with Gio Gonzalez since it's a spring game. Then trots back to the dugout while the Nats continue to yuck it up. Interesting differences between the teams.

JD Davis hit a line-drive single off him. Unclear exactly where—at first I thought hip, then glove—then he possibly hurt his knee falling. He walked off under his own power.
