Lineups for tonight's game...
Houston (2-0)
https://twitter.com/astros/status/920023200548958209
(Hinch's penmanship game continues to be strong...)
Springer - 8
Bregman - 5
Altuve - 4
Correa - 6
Gurriel - DH
Gattis - 2
Gonzalez - 3
Reddick - 9
Maybin - 7
Morton - P
New York (0-2)
Gardner - 7
Judge - 9
Gregorius - 6
Sanchez - 2
Bird - 3
Castro - 4
Hicks - 8
Frazier - 5
Heddy - DH
Sabithia - P
-
Now for something completely different . . .
So, Bregman batting second again and Reddick down the order to get the righty more at bats, but why Gurriel at DH? McCann out as a lefty. Gonzalez at first and Gurriel DH because . . . Maybin in left because . . . I don't get the defensive changes.
-
I assume the Yankees will run wild if they get on base. They have to, don't they?
-
They didn't really run that much on McCann, but any team should run against two of our catchers.
-

,
Yes, they will be aggressive assist the catcher.
Against the outfield . . .

I don't really have an issue with this batting order. I'm ok with the defensive alignment as well but it would have been fine with me if Maybin was in center, Springer in right and Reddick in left. I was playing around with lineups today and I came up with exactly what Hinch did, though I had Reddick as the DH, with Gonzo in left, Maybin in center and Springer in right. What Hinch has done probably disrupts the outfield defense the least. It keeps Reddick's arm in right where it should be. I guess he could have left Yuli on the field and DH'd Marwin. That would have been a good choice as well.

Wanting to get as many right handed bats as you can in the lineup. I suppose you could have Marwin at DH and leave Gurriel at 1B, but it's really not that big of a deal.

My thought exactly HH, and if you ask me, sometimes it looks like Yuli still favors his knee some. If that is the case, putting him at DH gives him a little break.

THIS PREGAME SHOW IS A FUCKING ATROCITY AGAINST NATURE!
ARod is fucking horrible.
-
So far we've covered what ARod would change in the Yankee lineup and what's happened in the Dodgers/Cubs series... I'm assuming we'll eventually get to the other team playing tonight, if there is time.
-
THIS PREGAME SHOW IS A FUCKING ATROCITY AGAINST NATURE!
ARod is fucking horrible.
Frank Thomas should do all the talking on that set.
-
Commercial break 2.
Watched Joe Maddon throw a temper tantum about the media questioning him using Lackey.
Beltran called out AROD for not Facetiming him anymore.
Plenty of Yankee highlights coming up. Astros nowhere to be found.
Also, they mentioned the Astros offense is all Altuve and Correa... I guess nevermind that .500 hitting Pineapple the Good Guys have.
-
They didn't really run that much on McCann, but any team should run against two of our catchers.
Not so many baserunners in the first two games, and big innings weren't en vogue, so it was all a little quiet. If the Astros put some runs up early, they'll have to run.
-
MLB Network does a much better job with pre/post game coverage.

Its the American League; how hard could it be?
-
Back from commerical. Showed Boone's walkoff homer against the Red Sox. Papi bitching and moaning.
HEY! Finally a mention of the Astros. Talking about Morton vs. CC. Jesus Christ, CC looks like someone stuck an air hose up his ass 2 years ago and forgot to turn it off.

My left nut would do a better job than Fox, and it looks a lot less creepy than A-Rod (http://digitalspyuk.cdnds.net/14/46/1600x800/landscape_movies-stanley-tucci-caesar-flickerman-the-hunger-games-catching-fire.jpg).
-
ARod making excuses for the Yankees faster than he used to inject anabolic steroids in his ass.
It's a sad state of affairs that Keith Hernandez and Big Hurt are both really solid commentators, but ARod and Big Mumbly keep talking over everyone.

38 minutes in, a feature on Altuve.
This is the first Astros feature so far other than 20 seconds of Beltran shitting on ARod.
-
Papi -
People don't talk about it, but Altuve is on the level of Mike Trout. He does everything.

BTW Charlie Morton is pitching tonight, but he grew up a Yankees fan. Now let's hear a feature on Sabathia!

He also intimidated that it’s Altuve’s short strike zone that helps because it forces the pitcher to pitch low. Even I know that Altuve can smoik a pitch at eye level back from whence it came.
Do these guys even watch a single fucking game before pontificating?

Top 2nd
Correa falls behind 2-2, then Ks on a FB.
Yuli flies out to fairly deep left center
Gattis takes 2 balls, breaks his bat fouling one into the stands, fouls another straight back, lays off a 58 footer
Fouls another, and finally takes ball 4 high.
Marwin steps in, takes off speed low/ away for strike 1, then a nice breaking ball for strike 2, same pitch for strike 3.
To bottom 2nd
Still scoreless

His worst pitch of the inning was the meatball that Hicks singled on.

Bottom 2
Sanchez flies out to CF on first pitch
Bird takes strike 1, then strike 2, swings at strike 3
Castro reaches on a dribbler to 3rd that Bregnan had no chance on
Hicks falls behind 1-2, lays off a low FB, reaches on a bloop to left center, Castro stops at 2nd
Frazier up with 2 on, takes a strike for ball 1, same pitch for strike 2, then reaches out and hits a 3 run fly ball to RF.
No mention of 'any other ball park '
Headley behind 0-2 takes a breaking ball in the dirt, prompting a video review says no hbp, then flies out to right

Reddick falls behind 0-2, lays off a tough breaker, then another, finally lines out to 2b
Maybin takes ball 1 low for strike 1, then bounces out up the middle 4-3
Springer up 2-0, takes ball 3, takng all the way for strike 1, walks on 5 pitches
Bregman takes a curve on the outside for legit strike, then takes high, turns on one nicely for a single Doreen LF line, Springer to 3rd
Altuve takes a curve high/ outside, then another further off the plate, CC stays away with ball 3 outside, Altuve chops one barely foul short of 3rd, then walks to load em up.
Correa digs in, takes a juicy FB for strike 1, pops out to short to end the rally.

Seriously, I'm confused as to how he didn't catch it.

What is Maybin doing?

I'm glad no one else understands what the fuck just happened.

Marwin catches that one.
Any leftfielder in baseball catches that. Hell Gattis or Beltran catch that.
-
Marwin catches that one.
He def doesn't give up on it like that.
-
He wasn't anywhere near it when it hit...
-
Self-inflicted 4 out innings not welcome here.
-
Seriously, I'm confused as to how he didn't catch it.
You and me both. I rewound it, and I wonder if he thought the dirt was the foul line and he was about to hit the fence? Other than that, I have no idea. Complete fuckup.
-
This is so shitty. Morton is pitching a hell of a game in the biggest start of his career and can't catch a fucking break.
-
I'm glad no one else understands what the fuck just happened.
I understand what happened, he hesitated instead of going for it.
-
He wasn't anywhere near it when it hit...
He checked up before he got to the dirt. With Maybin's speed he could've easily caught that.

This is so shitty. Morton is pitching a hell of a game in the biggest start of his career and can't catch a fucking break.
Gotta power through it. The worm will turn.

Come on. He threw the pitches they hit.

This has been my fear. That Morton can't past the third or fourth inning and the bullpen gets taxed.

But it would be great if Morton could get out of this inning.

Morton definitely pitched around Frasier. Depressing that a number 8 hitter has to be pitched around.
-
But that doesn't mean they are scared of him.

Not sure if he pitched around him. Morton seems to have lost all command.
-
But that doesn't mean they are scared of him.
If I remember correctly, Frazier was 7-for-18 with 3 homers against Morton *before* he hit that last homer. They ought to at least be a little wary.
-
Holy fuck...how is that not an out!
-
But that doesn't mean they are scared of him.
It means Frazier is 8-16 with three homers off Morton.
-
Holy fuck...how is that not an out!
"Another perfectly placed hit." Sure, John. That was all planned out.
-
It means Frazier is 8-16 with three homers off Morton.
well, then why not intentionally walk him and save the pitches?

Morton's toast.

and maybe i just wanted to be optimistic.

Yup. The stereotypical Morton Wall.

No chance with the shift.
This is the difference between Morton and Verlander, and it is not their stuff.
He is earnest and articulate and seems like a great person, but every interview he gives is full of self doubt.

Bottom 4
Bird works the count full, bounces a ground rule double into the stands in left that Maybin apparently lost (?)
Castro falls behind 0-2, evens the count, then grounds out to Bregman. Runner stays at 2nd.
Hicks hacks/ misses strike 1, takes another high, another low, 2-1 count, bounces one foul to first, takes low for ball 3, fouls off a FB (Gattis asked for it high, it was down the pipe), then flies out deep to right, advancing the runner to 3rd.
Frazier takes an off speed pitch low, takes ball 2 low/away, fouls off the next pitch, takes low for ball 3, then takes an inside FB to walk.
Headley up, takes ball 1 high, fouls off a slider, lays off the next one inside, fends off a FB , checks his swing dor a full count, then hits a single than barely leaves the infield to bring a run in.
Eckstein-Gardner takes a breaking ball of the knee to load the bases
Judge up, as AJ gets Morton. Harris in.
Judge up, Harris bounces ball 1 over Gattis, run scores, deftly negating the Judge grand slam opportunity that would have ended the postseason immediately; instead he has to settle for a measly 3 run shot to left field.
Gregarious (not bothering to correct autocorrect) gets to a full count hits a ball sharply off Marwin, deftly fielded/flipped by Altuve to end the inning 3-4-1.
And now I think I'll vomit.
End 4
Astros 0
Yankees 8
Morton 4.2 IP, 8 runs

He would not have skipped the game. She was in labor, and he did not go to the hospital until after the game. This is their third child, it is the playoffs, and she is a baseball wife.
-
I'm sure Gardner is so glad that Buck took it upon himself to dedicate that F8 to his grandma.
Fox doesn't care about objectively covering the series. They have an ex-Yankee on their pre/post game show and had an ex-Red Sox on it in the last series. Joe Buck couldn't be pulling harder for the Yankees if he tried.
-

Postseason.

B7:
McHugh still in:
Gardner – ball, ball, foul, F8
Judge – strike, ball inside, ball low, strike, ball, swinging strike (low and away breaking ball)
Gregorius – ball outside, strike outside black, ball inside, grounder 4-3.
8-0 Yankees.
-
Do you know how many runs the opponent had going into the 8th inning on 5/29/2017? 8.
-
Still 6 outs.. this team is fully capable....
-
Really? Wow, I'm amazed. More to life than baseball. It's just a game, and it's just a job. You only get one life.
So naive.
-

Unimportant then, that's what you're saying.

Colin doing work and saving the bullpen. The bats need to wake up.

Postseason.
Yup, that too.

Thanks JNH.
Happy to do it. Least I can do after all that I have gotten from reading you all.

Good thing I'm a second child.

Fuck you.

Just stop. Marwin knew she was going into labor the day of game 1, and he played in the game anyway. He then came back and played in game 2 the next day. His wife understands the deal right now..
-

This is the stupidest conversation ever.

Nope, not at all. Not their first rodeo. If the baby was born during game 2, he would have missed it, and their world would have kept turning. She wanted him to play, obviously.
-
If you send 12 men to the plate, it'll be a different story.
-
We have not started hitting yet this series.
-
Dang.
-
Correa just missed that.
-
We have not started hitting yet this series.
Only Altuve, Correa and Yuli have really had good at bats this series. Everyone elae has been terrible.
-

Isn't that what I said in the first place? All I said was he seems tired and possibly shouldn't have been in the game today.
Whoever said this was a stupid conversation, I agree. Let's change the subject. Sorry I brought it up.
-
Damn.
-
Only Altuve, Correa and Yuli have really had good at bats this series. Everyone elae has been terrible.
Four runs in three games. Not a recipe for success.
-
Hankook tires brought up. Top of the 9th is all set for the Astros to end the shutout.
-
This is the stupidest conversation ever.
Maybe, but there is a fair bit to beat..
-
Damn, two outs on the warning track and the Yankees have 6 runs on cheap homers. One of thise nights. Peacock better be on tomorrow.
-
We have not started hitting yet this series.
Most troubling aspect of all this.
Entering the game outfielders were 0 for the series.
-
Maybe, but there is a fair bit to beat..
Well that's true, and I've been in many a contender.
-
Four runs in three games. Not a recipe for success.
Yep. They are fortunate to have two wins in this series.
-
T8:
Warren still in:
Correa – (missed first two pitches 1-1), swinging strike on 1-1, ball (down and away), ball, foul back, foul (protecting against low and away pitch), foul back (inside FB), foul back, to the warning track in straightway center F8.
Gurriel – ball low, ball low and outside, swinging strike (tried to check on low and outside), foul back, warning track shot in right center, F8.
Gattis – pop foul to right of first – F3.
8-0 Yankees.
-
This team is in a shit ton of trouble if they don't start hitting the ball with some consistency. Tonight has been a recipe for how a team ends up down 3-2 going back home against shit pitching.
-
This is the stupidest conversation ever.
Does not come close to tires for 7 innings.
-
Most troubling aspect of all this.
Entering the game outfielders were 0 for the series.
Springer needs to get his swing under control. Through the first at bat tonight, he was falling down on almost every swing. And Reddick looks out of sorts for one of the first times this season. Marwin really didn't look great in the Red Sox series, so he's been struggling for awhile.
-
Does not come close to tires for 7 innings.
I would rather discuss tars than anklebiters.
-
Peacock needs to pitch like he did all year. Kuechel, Verlander, then Staff.
-
Oh Joe. Nice sell job on your HOME RUN wait fly ball call.
Fucking schill.
-
FLY BALL INTO LEFT!!!!!!! Catch by Maybin. Jesus Buck.

Peacock needs to pitch like he did all year. Kuechel, Verlander, then Staff.
Staff? I thought his name was McHugh?

et al
-

I hope the bats wake up tomorrow and Peacock is on his game. Get this train back on track. And give Keuchel and Verlander two closeout opportunities.
-
Morton is so frustrating and has so much potential. He does not believe in himself enough to push through adversity.
-

It’s not like the Yankees are hitting the cover off the ball. They were gifted at least half of tonight’s runs.

McHugh still in:
Sanchez – F7 to the warning track (not the wall, as was exclaimed on the broadcast).
Bird – walk (I think, my TV blinked a couple of times)
Castro – strikes out
Hicks – F8.
8-0 Yankees.

still more runs than the Astros scored.

If this goes seven games, it's the same matchup as tonight. Need to win tomorrow.

While true, you aren't winning too many games averaging less than two runs a game. The Astros vaunted offense has to start humming. You can't expect every starter to make miniscule run support hold up like Keuchel and Verlander did in the first two games.
-
If it goes 7 then I really think Colin starts the game.

Did the Yankees use more pitchers than the Astros?

Infield hits, bloops, two barely homers like Correa’s was Sat, but out pitcher could not get swings and misses.

Doesn't matter. They haven't used important pitchers.

It begins

You definately need more runs than 0 to win.

Betances doing mopup. Wow

Yopu definately need more runs than 0 to win.
Sounds like something Joe Buck would say.

I don't think we see Maybin in the lineup tomorrow.

RHP.

He wasn't going to be in against a righty in Gray. I'm guessing you'll see the same lineup as games 1 and 2.

Doesn't matter. They haven't used important pitchers.
And thanks to Colin, the Astros bullpen didn't get torched (minus Harris).

And doing it poorly.
Which is why he is doing mopup.

T9:
Betances in to pitch:
Gonzalez – ball inside, ball outside (not even close), ball high (not even close), Gregorius comes to mound to chat, ball low and inside. 4 pitch walk. Rothschild out to talk.
Fisher pinch hits for Reddick – ball inside (not close), strike (generously given, looked outside), foul (outside pitch), ball inside (missed outside target), ball outside and high, ball inside. Pitching change.
Kahnle in for Betances:
Maybin – ball (high and inside, checked swing), basehit to left – single, bases loaded no outs.
Springer – strike (looked high and inside), ball (low and outside), strike (outside black), swinging strike out (low and outside slider).
Bregman – strike (98 mph top of zone FB), ball (down and away), ball (high FB), ball (FB low), ball (low and away FB). Walks in a run. Chapman warming up.
Altuve – strike, ball high, strike (top of zone slider?), grounder up the middle 4U-3 double play.
8-1 Yankees, final.

Maybe Hinch had a come to Jesus meeting with McCullers. Maybe he hopes to get just three innings out of him.
One thing's for sure...McCullers has the opportunity to grab the bull by the balls and make history. I'd sure like him to do so. We'll see if he has it in him.

Hinch was really talking him up in the post-game press conference (as you would expect him to do). Talked about him being one of the best pitchers in baseball with electric stuff.

He has the stuff to shut them down. I hope first half Lance shows back up.
I also hope Verlander makes Morton a project. His stuff is too good to not be an elite pitcher. He does not believe in himself.

I hope he can contain his emotions somewhat. He certainly has the talent and the stuff to shut them down. We need some better luck and our offense to wake up. Great opportunity for McCullers to show who he really is.
This is playoff baseball. (I know, Neil, postseason). This is the way it is supposed to be. There is nothing like it.

I have wondered a few times if he is the surly little pick that he acts like or is he doing a John McEnroe and getting himself into a lather thinking that he plays better when he is angry?

McHugh was really good last night. I wonder why Hinch didn't include him in the playoff rotation. He has pitched better down the stretch than any starter other than Keuchel and Verlander.
-
It's P'ostseason.
Get it right.

Well, here is an explanation from Maybin on that FB “It’s a long run. Once I got there I kind of froze,” Maybin said. “It’s one of those things where you realize you’re by yourself, and in my head, I was thinking about if I missed it’s probably gonna be a triple. It’s just a tough play.”

That is brutal thing for a major leaguer to admit.

Wow, that's an astonishingly bad approach.
With an astonishingly bad result. If Astros are going to have a chance in this series they need to get some production from the OFers that is missing. Totally unproductive offensively so far.
-
Wow, that's an astonishingly bad approach.
Yes, and I threw home run pitches, and you had passed balls. Shit happens. We got two quick outs after that play. These games all turn on pitching, and Charlie could not close them out. I hope he gets another chance before our season ends. His stuff was electric.
-

I look at it exactly the opposite: he is owning his misplay without excuses. In another interview, he said he was afraid a dive would give them a triple and did not realize it would bounce into the stands. He said they talked about it in the dugout, and he realizes he should have dived.
I would much rather a guy say “I fucked up” than hide behind cliches and excuses.

That was what struck me through the first few frames: his stuff was moving nicely. Contrast with CC who was very effective but more in the crafty way (ie CCs FBs were arrow straight, 92 mph, but effective because of location and as change of pace from his breaking balls).
Charlie's pitches looked like they had wood-repulsing technology there for a brief, short while. As he started struggling, he started missing spots and seems his confidence evaporated.
Then the bottom fell out.

All credit to his honesty. I was referring to admitting that he froze in the situation, which is a tough thing for a major leaguer to admit to.

It wasn't a correction, just part of a running joke.

In my opinion, which is based on the many interviews of him I have seen, confidence is his entire issue. He does not believe he is good, and he has the stuff to be great.

You and Strom have both said Morton doesn't realize how good of a pitcher he is.
He's a guy who has played for ten years in the major leagues as a sinker ball pitcher who could not get lefties out and suddenly has complemented his repertoire with filthy stuff. Plenty of people would just say fuck yeah and dial it to 11 but Charlie seems to be a very introspective guy who cannot get out of the mentality he created in order to have that major league career in the first place. Unfortunately part of his introspective personality appears to include a fair amount of self-doubt, almost as if he thinks his new ability is going to suddenly go away as quickly as it appeared, which is not an unreasonable fear to have, especially given his injury history.
-

Morton gave an interview before the game yesterday that wasn't exactly overflowing with confidence. The interviewer asked him if the short porch in RF in Yankee Stadium affected the way he approached hitters. I expected him to something along the lines of "as a pitcher, I can't worry about that, I have to go out and attack hitters and make my pitches". Instead he sort of stumbled and said something like "yeah, I worry about that...I used to throw a lot of ground balls, but my sinker isn't what it used to be, so now I get more fly balls and it definitely affects your mindset out there". I let out a long sigh.
-
It was always easier for me to get over being blown out than losing a close game, so hopefully the Astros feel the same. There's no time for a hangover today.
But Springer, Marwin, Reddick and a few others need to take full advantage of their familiarity with Sonny Grey this afternoon, and do it early.
-
He does not even believe in his new ability. In his interview with Sparks at Fenway, Sparks tried to get him to admit he has elite stuff. Morton’s response was “I throw the ball well, but i lack the pitching part.” Paraphrased because I do not remember the exact words.
-

I kind of agree. By the 8th last night, the stadium was almost empty. It was just another game. The boys in the Fox studio acted like it was Christmas morning, but no one was watching.
As a wise old man once said...it's the postseason, you're not going to win them all. Go out and get a win today.
