I thought the same thing. Maybe it'll confuse Porcello.

I guess it's in part because Marwin's climbed the ladder.

And rattling Porcello because he clearly remembers just pitching to that guy is a brilliant strategy.

Fox dipshits talking about the Yankees, of course, even though they don’t play for about 5 hours. In prime time, natch.
Can’t say I’m too bothered that the last game in Boston is tough for them to attend / be drunk for. Hope we can keep them quiet and subdued today.

Looks like there's a good chance we get a rain delay...which team does that favor? Our logical long man to throw out there after a rain delay would be who? Martes/Fiers?
-
I really hope Price isn’t available today. Also, I thought they might start Sale, given this being a must-win for them. I’m sure Porcello is on a short leash.

I would hope the Astros, as Price has pitched a couple of long relief stints in the last two games. They may throw him again, but I’d like to think the Astros would get him this time - he walked a few tightropes yesterday.

Game 5 is must win for them too, so don't know that it makes sense to start Sale on short rest.

Neither Martes nor Fiers are on the roster. There is no logical long man for the Astros today. McHugh isn’t on the roster either, I’m sure McCullers isn’t available... probably just piece it together with Musgrove, Harris etc. Maybe Verlander, depending.

Thanks for all the feedback. Damn the rain. I'd rather just see a straight forward 9 inning game. Something about off and on play that worries the shit out of me. Then again, I'm strong as an oak against pressure in every area of my life save the Astros. When times get dicey with the Stros, I fold like a cheap lawn chair.

Morton's got this!!!!
-
I know it shouldn’t bother me, because it’s been going on forever, but it’s wholly pissing me off that the pregame show is all about rooting for the Red Sox.
Especially after the nose in assholes act the broadcast crew pulled yesterday.

Apparently you've never taken a leisurely stroll down West Broadway in South Boston at noon on any random weekday.

Regardless of what happens in this series, the media schlong-gorvelling will be intolerable if the Yankees advance to the ALCS.
-

Yes he is.
And I'm speaking in the baseball sense.

Astros at the corners..no one out...

I love Boston. Every other doorway is a bar.

shaky control . . .

Altuve grounds into 1-4-6-3 double play, but Springer scores...Astros grab a 1-0 lead

A little bad luck on the bounce off the mound.

Those folks appear to have a powerful thirst.

I have a rumbling stomach and I think it would feel better if the Astros scored some runs.

Marwin got a hit, on his arm.

Astros with two on, two out...

Damn. That was a loud smack on Marwin's elbow.
-
Marwin got a hit, on his arm.
That looks so painful. Right on the elbow.

Sounded like it hurt like hell.

T1:
Springer doubles to LCF
Reddick...tries a really awkward bunt, fouls it off...wild pitch, to 3B goes Springer...works the count full...walks
Altuve...2-0...grounds into1-4-6-3 double play, Springer scores...ball smoked up the middle, but Porcello got a glove on it to slow it down
Correa walks
Marwin hit by pitch, Correa to 2B
Bregman strikes out swinging
That's disappointing...two walks, HBP, double, wild pitch...one run
1-0 Astros

Alex needs a hit!!!

Too many base runners to only end up with one run.

You just know Yuli is going to lead off with a hit.

Pedroia grounds out 3U
Bogaerts...3-0...3-1...homers to RCF
Benintindi grounds out 4-3

RBI single from Springer. Not sure why he didn't get to 2B as the ball rolled all the way to the wall.

Weird. The Red Sox catcher didn't celebrate after that pitch.

Don't know. Cameras pretty much only show what Sox players do.

Not sure what Springers problem is. Should have had a double, then should have moved to 3B on the wild overthrow that rattled around. Content to stand there and watch the game.

Do people keep accusing the Astros of stealing signs because they can hit the ball? Because if they are able to steal signs, then maybe that team needs better signs.
-
T2:
Gurriel...0-2...triples to RF...Betts was way over in the RCF gap, and slid to try to stop the ball, but it got past him
Gattis...0-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch over his head
McCann...0-2...infield back...1-2...2-2...3-2...strikes out swinging a slider in off the plate
Springer singles to LF, Gurriel scores...not sure why Springer isn't on 2B
Reddick bloops a single to LF...throw goes to 3B is way wild and bounces around near the 3B dugout and nobody covering 3B. Springer stands at 2B and watches.
Altuve...full up...walks, Springer to 3B, Reddick to 2B
Correa...quickly down 0-2...strikes out swinging
Astros send seven to the plate, but can only muster another single run
2-1 Astros

They keep letting the sox off the hook.

Shit.

Nice work by Morton on the corners and taking what the umpire was giving. Man, his ball moves a lot.
What an idiot. Ferrell getting home myself right n in the 2nd inning of an elimination game.

He was searching for the first three hitters and then made some great pitches against the last three. Credit where it's due. Got some favorable calls, but put them in a spot to get the calls.

to fuck with the other team.
-
SWING THE FUCKING BAT!
-
Nasty strike 3 to Correa.
-
SWING THE FUCKING BAT!
guess the Astros aren't as aggressive as the pre game guys were saying.
-
Nasty strike 3 to Correa.
Gameday says it was 6 inches off the plate.
-
T5:
Altuve bunts...Devers with a blue star barehanded play to get him 5-3...ball was bunted a little hard
Correa...works the count full...strikes out looking
Marwin flies out to shallow CF
2-1 Astros
-
Gameday says it was 6 inches off the plate.
It was off the plate, but not that far.
-
Gameday says it was 6 inches off the plate.
Looked about the same as the Pedroia pitch he threw a shit fit over. Not the same spot, but the same general strike-ness.
-

Gameday disagrees with you, and since I'm Astros-centric I'm agreeing with Gameday.
-
It was off the plate, but not that far.
Ended close enough you'd like him to fend it off, but it started way off.
At least he didn't throw a hissy fit.
-
Looked about the same as the Pedroia pitch he threw a shit fit over. Not the same spot, but the same general strike-ness.
It was his weird, nearly side armed slider that starts far off the plate and then floats in over the corner. I didn't see any reason not to call it a strike. Carlos spat on a better pitch earlier in the at bat.
-
guess the Astros aren't as aggressive as the pre game guys were saying.
And they're striking out a lot. Starting to look like a bad case of Ensbergian Flu has struck the clubhouse.
-
Verlander coming in
-
Here comes the Verlander
-
Verlander coming in.
-
Verlander coming in
I don't like it.
-
Verlander in. This is a “Holy Shit” moment, no matter how it works out.
-
I have to say, this is shocking to me.
-
Oh fuck, I was hoping that was not going to be needed.
-
I don't like it.
Using your Game 5 starter on short rest in Game 4? What's not to love.
-
Wow. Sparks admits he was off on that call. They mention Keuchel available on normal rest G5, if necessary.
-
I have to say, this is shocking to me.
Would you say it's intriguing?
-
I have to say, this is shocking to me.
my sentiments exactly.

I would be less concerned if there weren't a real chance that they'll stop the game for six hours or sixteen hours.

Bringing him in in the middle of the inning is what I was referring to.
-
Would you say it's intriguing?
Maybe he'll intrigue his way into a double play here.
-
I would be less concerned if there weren't a real chance that they'll stop the game for six hours or sixteen hours.
Maybe Hinch knows more about the weather than the rest of us
-
I don't like it.
This is the kind of move that either wins a lot of plaudits, or gets managers fired.
-
Well that sucks

Benintendi with a 2-run home run....3-2 Sox
-
Not off to a fortuitous start
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Welp

That sucked.
-
Desperation move that was totally unneeded. Great work, AJ.
-
FUCK
-
So much for that brilliance.
-
Fuck you, Hinch.
-
:(
-
Playoffs = over-managing
-
Son of a bitch
-
Hindsight being blah blah blah, but Verlander struggled with Benintendi in Houston Thursday. Weird situation to put him in.
-
That was not according to plan. Offense gonna have to pick him up.
-
That was a terrible pitch.
I'm still annoyed that Hinch took Peacock out so quickly yesterday.
-
I am utterly baffled.
-
So much for that brilliance.
I thought never bringing in a starting pitcher in the middle of an inning was part of the managing rule book. Doubly so here when you're not in an elimination game.
-
Verlander not looking good
-
There is NO reason to go to Verlander there. Absolutely zero. Putting the team in a position to lose due to idiotic overmanaging.
-
Red Sox with all the momentum in the world now, and the vaunted offense is looking like hot garbage
-
Hindsight being blah blah blah, but Verlander struggled with Benintendi in Houston Thursday. Weird situation to put him in.
Hinch is out of his depth. Let's face it.
-
Hinch is out of his depth. Let's face it.
go away
-
Why does Ramirez even wear a helmet?
-
B5:
Pedroia grounds out 5-3
Bogaerts...3-1...3-2...walks
And that's all for Morton, Verlander in for his first career relief appearance
Benintendi homers to RF on a hanging slider, Bogaerts scores
Betts grounds out 6-3...woulda been inning ending double play
Moreland...3-2...walks
Ramirez flies out F9
3-2 Sox
-
There's no way bringing Verlander in wasn't discussed with Lunhow before this game. AJ is safe.
-
The stage does seem a bit too big for Hinch but this would all be a non-issue if someone would drive in a run every dozen innings or so.
-

He definitely over-managed it. That was the spot they dealt Liriano for (I know) but still. That's who I would have gone with.
-
And again, no one on base for Yuli, time for another hit.
-
Gurriel with a one out double...nobody on...again.
-
Lets tie this fucker up.
-
Couple of bad at bats incoming.
-
Gurriel with a one out double...nobody on...again.
At least Yuli knows what he is doing.

Lets tie this fucker up.
with McGattis? please.

Gurriel with a one out double...nobody on...again.
E5 (questionable scoring, IMO)

Let's see if the Bobsey twins can pull their thumbs out.

Who cares? He's on base again.
-
E5 (questionable scoring, IMO)
Nope. Ball took a dead hop in the mud. Sat down hard.
-
What kind of pitch is Evan looking to hit?
-
Sale is fucking dealing
-
Sale is fucking dealing
and the bats are stuck on shoulders, at least swing.
-
That was depressingly predictable.
-
T6:
Bregman flies out F8 on the first pitch...announcers splooge all over themselves
Gurriel reaches on a 2-base E5
Gattis...0-2...strikes out looking
McCann...0-2..strikes out swinging at a slider that bounces in the other batter's box
Fuck. More LOBsters.
3-2 Sox
-
I have to say, this is shocking to me.
Hinch is gripping. Coaches can't win games, but they can lose them.
-
with McGattis? please.
Point taken.
-
Even before this shitshow I would have swapped Gattis for McHugh and not thought about it twice.
-
at least he swung the bat?
-
I’ll ban myself from whatever is left in the season if they come back, but the Astros are done today.
-
Wow. Sparks admits he was off on that call. They mention Keuchel available on normal rest G5, if necessary.
And Verlander could still go in Game #1 of the ALCS. If we get there...
-
Everyone in a Astros uni except Yuli is clenched so hard their farts are squeaking. This is hard to watch.
-
The free swinging Devers draws a leadoff walk...
-
Even before this shitshow I would have swapped Gattis for McHugh and not thought about it twice.
I can't understand why this 25 man roster has Tyler White but no Colin McHugh
-
I have turned the game off for the sake of my job, but if the Astros would try to get a hit and not a homerun maybe something good would happen for them.
At least Yuli is having some fun.
-
B6:
Devers...3-2...walks
Vazquez...0-2...flies out F8
Bradley grounds into 5-6-3 double play
3-2 Sox
-
It's time for the Astros to remember who they are and start vauntin' relentlessly.
-
I can't understand why this 25 man roster has Tyler White but no Colin McHugh
I had totally forgotten that that useless goon was on the roster.

Springer leads of the 7th with a knock...
-
The Astros are just determined to take first pitch meatballs
-
The leadoff man is on. Time to strand him.
-
Somebody teach Reddick how to bunt.
-
Nasty.
-
SWING THE FUCKING BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Laredo slider is wicked gud. Shitfuck.
-

-
Quite giving up on the slider, it's gonna come back. Fuck.
-
Come on, Marwin. Shut that backstop up.
-
Legitimately did not expect Correa to reach there.
-
T7:
Springer singles to LF
Reddick...takes a first pitch meatball...makes a feeble attempt at a bunt and fouls it off...0-2...1-2...2-2...pops out to shallow LF
Altuve...down 1-2...strikes out looking
Correa singles to LF, Springe to 2B
Marwin strikes out swinging on a pitch that bounces
two more LOBsters

This. Is. Fucking. Pathetic.
Astros are so tight

Is game 5 back in Houston?
Yes. Wednesday.

10 ks for the good guys. 15 lobsters thru 7 at bats.
-
So when does beltran pinch hit? For gattis?
-
Also, the ALDS has been the poster series for electronic strike zones. The inconsistency has been incredibly bad.
-
And I don’t think a reliever has stranded a base runner in Boston.

He was due.
-
Hell yes!
-
Fucking Angel! Fucking us from way down the LF line.
-
The fuck Angel Hernandez?! How is Gattis not at second?
-
fair by the corner of the bag.
-
Shouldn’t there be ground rules that dictate this sort of thing?
-
I thought ball boys were especially trained not to touch balls in play.
-
WTF? That is so wrong.
-
How the fuck can interference by the ball girl benefit the Red Sox there? Gattis makes 2nd if she leaves it alone anyway.
-
Ok, I finally turned the sound off. Why the fuck is Gattis at 1st? He was safe at 2nd, and the ball boy interfered which should've given him 2nd anyway.
-
Shouldn’t there be ground rules that dictate this sort of thing?
There are baseball rules, which say you put the runner where you think he'd have ended up with no interference. They didn't think Gattis would make second base.
-
Shouldn’t there be ground rules that dictate this sort of thing?
Ought to be a ground-rule double, especially when the home team's personnel is involved.
-
There are baseball rules, which say you put the runner where you think he'd have ended up with no interference. They didn't think Gattis would make second base.
I can't really argue with that. The part about Gattis making second base, that is.
-
Can someone explain why Hinch didn't go out and lose his mind after that Angelfucking?
-
There are baseball rules, which say you put the runner where you think he'd have ended up with no interference. They didn't think Gattis would make second base.
Oh, ok. I thought interference was an automatic extra base.
-
If McCann hits into a DP, I may go dark and will then be on the phone to IT for a new computer.
-
Fucking idiot. Obviously clueless about grabbing balls.
-
Damn. Well hit out.
-
How the fuck can interference by the ball girl benefit the Red Sox there?
You have to ask?
-
Fucking idiot. Obviously clueless about grabbing balls.
Dude was as red in the face as I've ever seen.
-
Maybin’s gotta go.
-
That's it for Sale...Kimbrel coming in.
-
ball boy
Umm...
-
Dude was as red in the face as I've ever seen.
Dudette. My bad.
-
I can't really argue with that. The part about Gattis making second base, that is.
He made it anyway, with the ball girl stopping the ball going further into the corner of the elbow. He makes 2nd more easily if she doesn't touch it.
-
Maybin’s gotta go.
Yep. Gotta try to take 2B, especially with two out and top of the order up.
-
He made it anyway, with the ball girl stopping the ball going further into the corner of the elbow. He makes 2nd more easily if she doesn't touch it.
If the ball caroms back to Bogaerts, which likely would have happened, he stays at 1B.
-
If the ball caroms back to Bogaerts, which likely would have happened, he stays at 1B.
Still. Fuck Angel Hernandez. Right in the ass.
-
Umm...
Well, you have to admit, she is rather mannish.
-
Never been happier to see Kimbrel.
Btw, as long as it's a tie game, anything can happen...
-
On the ballgirl interference play, the announcers were saying Gattis was going to 2nd "at his own risk". That can't be correct, can it? Either the ball is dead when she touches it, or if the play was alive Gattis was safe anyway.
I still don't see why it's umpire's discretion. If a fan reaches out and touches it, that's a double. (Right?)
-
Is that not a challengeable play?
-
Oh, ok. I thought interference was an automatic extra base.
Nope. Most often they call it a double, but isn't by rule.
-
Is that not a challengeable play?
No.
-
Still. Fuck Angel Hernandez. Right in the ass.
Uh, can we choose a different phrase?
-
She needs to be tossed out of the ballpark

Interference isn't a double by rule. It's up the umpire's discretion to place runners where they think they'd have ended up without the interference.
-
Two on, two out for Reddick...
-
The Sox have had some pretty poor defense behind the plate.
-
Reddick up. The Shitshack Redemption.
-
Interference isn't a double by rule. It's up the umpire's discretion to place runners where they think they'd have ended up without the interference.
Yeah, just looked it up. Assuming the ball girl is considered a "spectator", the rule is:
" Batter and runners shall be placed where in the umpire’s
judgment they would have been had the interference not
occurred."
Fuck Angel Hernandez

T8:

Gurriel grounds out 6-3
Gattis doubles down the LF line...ball girl fields it, so they put Gattis back at 1B
Maybin in to pinch run for Gattis
McCann smashes a screaming line drive right at Betts
That's it for Sale, Kimbrel in...
Wild pitch, Maybin to 2B
Springer...3-0...green light foul ball...3-1...walks
Reddick...full count....runners on the move...singles to LF, Maybin scores, Springer to 3B
Altuve flies out F8
But the Astros retake the lead 4-3

Right call here putting Giles in for the 6 out save opportunity.

Giles in the 8th... Wonder if he gets two innings...

Personally I'd prefer Harris for the 8th and Giles for the 9th, but whatever.

Giles in the 8th... Wonder if he gets two innings...
I would think so, unless he makes us all cry.

I can't imagine what would've happened if he'd been out at 2nd.
I'm going with Pierzynski doesn't know what the hell he was talking about and the ball was dead anyway.

Giles in for the 8th...

Verlander 2-0, Sale 0-2
Nice lines.
I can't believe anyone thought bringing Verlander in was a bad idea.
-
Proof that you never know how trades will work out. The Red Sox dealt a ton of talent for Sale to win playoff games. They had him all year. He lost 2 of their 3 losses. Luhnow gets vilified for not dealing then gets Verlander at the last second and he wins 2 of the 3 playoff games. Those same ones that Sale lost.
-
I can't believe anyone thought bringing Verlander in was a bad idea.
I'm thrilled I was wrong!
-
So Verlander in relief...brilliant move, huh?

Go Yankees!

He was nails after he got through the 5th.

In the 8th I unbuttoned my Altuve jersey to reveal my Bagwell beard shirt.
It will be the uniform for the duration.

I dunno. Who would have thought the Indians would outslug the Yankees to win a game, and the Yankees outpitch the Indians to win a game?
I'm just glad the Astros got through.

Was going to say the same thing. Might need to work on some cardio to get ready for the next series...
This IS cardio for me!

So. The last two teams the Astros have eliminated from the post-season are the Red Sox and the Yankees.
-
I fucking love this team. That is all.
-
And the Cardinals before that.
Sparks going crazy in the clubhouse. I would pay real money for a recording of what just happened.

I'll have to watch this game again sometime. So many dramatic moments, such a back and forth game. I feel like I've already forgotten 2/3 of the amazing things that happened in the game.
-
Also, in the midst of all of this, Bregman's performance should be noted. His jack changed the complexion of the game and gave the bats some life again. And he made a tough play look easy for a big out 1 in the 9th after the circus HR.

Apparently Musgrove and Devinksi's nickname for Bregman is STINKY
-
Not for nothing, but I liked the move to Verlander right away. Keuchel on full rest at home in Game 5 (just learned that Bregman’s nick is “Stinky B”) sounded ideal, and meanwhile Verlander is the best pitcher available. You win with your horses!
-

Which is weird because Hernandez actually kind of likes the Astros. I do think however that he is socially impressionable enough to reflect the dominant vibe.

Morton gutted out a soggy start and kept his team in the game. If it were my call he'd get the ball in the game 3 of the ALCS.

What a game. One of my friends pointed out to me that there were only 2 at bats the entire game where the score wasn't within a run. Literally any pitch could change the whole game.

i thought it was staged.
They did it to setup Pedroia as the last out.

cum dumpster.
Edited for efficiency.
What a great fucking win. Honestly that win felt like "The Astros" this season. Plenty of LoBsters but those two out two strike rallies... just enough vaunting when it counts. I'm so happy we have at the least four games left this season!

incredible restraint by HPU. Also incredible lack of poise from Pedroia. 2nd inning and you melt down? Reminded me of the Clemens meltdown on the mound in the playoffs in the late 80s.

Sparks SOUNDS hammered, but this is immediately after the game. So, either he is a major lightweight, his excited voice sounds like everyone else's hammered voice, or he was boozing it up during the game.

I went back and rewatched that inside the park home run (http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=20971087), and the crowd and Chris Berman on ESPN radio reacted with way too much excitement. When down by 2 runs in the 9th, a walk and a solo home run are not that different from a win expectancy standpoint. Both bring the tying run to the plate. That's why teams let that unimportant runner take bases on defensive indifference. And depending on whether a closer prefers pitching from the windup, a solo home run is sometimes worse than having distracting traffic on the bases.
The fans were acting like they just won the World Series. And Chris Berman was completely in the tank for the Red Sox. No surprise there.

"He is light-years ahead of a regular 23-year-old," Houston catcher Brian McCann said. "He shows up every day, and you know what you're getting out of Alex Bregman. He loves the game of baseball probably more than anybody I've ever been around. He owns the moment."

On if the things I love about Bregman is he seems to be a student of the game. Numerous times I've heard him say about trying to get the attention of Beltran or how he pesters Marwin any chance he gets to talk fielding, positioning etc.
