Jayne over at Whattheheckbobby has done her usual bang up job of laying out the upcoming Rule 5 draft (https://whattheheckbobby.blogspot.com/2017/09/2017-rule-5-draft-primer-and-eligible.html).
She starts with this reminder that really the 40 man is like the 43 man right now:
The current Astros 40-man roster is full to overflowing right now with the 60-day DL stints of Jandel Gustave and Brady Rodgers making them the 41st and 42nd player respectively. And, oh, what happens when David Paulino is eligible to play again? Hmmmm, getting a little crowded, isn't it? And, to make matters just a wee bit more complicated, at some point before late November, the Astros are going to have to figure out who to add and who to subtract or risk losing a player or two to the Rule 5 Draft.
Below the rules, she list the players eligible. While there are names of interest on the list, the first players to watch will be the three that come off the current 40 man roster.

One of those moves has to come this week; Paulino's suspension ends after Saturday's game.

Astros Add Dean Deetz and Cionel Perez to 40 man to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. (https://www.crawfishboxes.com/2017/11/20/16683128/astros-trade-ramon-laureano-for-brandon-bailey-add-cionel-perez-and-dean-deetz)
Left unprotected are names like Jon Kemmer, Brandon McCurry, Cy Sneed, and Jason Martin. In general, pitchers are more likely to be taken than position players just because you can bury then in the bullpen an not hurt their development.

Martin rated by Sickels as #13 prospect in system.

I have been traveling and am out of touch. When is (or was?) the Rule 5 draft this year?
-
Dec 14th.
I will be surprised if the Astros lose anyone as there are some top prospects on the list of eligible players like: Appell, Kohl Stewart, Max Pentecost.
Here is a good look at who is available from each team's MLB top prospect lis (https://www.mlb.com/news/top-available-prospects-in-mlb-rule-5-draft/c-262486372)t.

Nice article. I was interested to see Cosart on that list along with Appel.
The one real take-away, though, was how hard it is to get the draft right. How many guys taken much later in those years' drafts are already performing at the MLB level? I bet it is a pretty good number.
