Fiers leaving the curve up early. Not a good sign.

Of course, he promptly records two strikeouts to end the top of the first.

I'm just not a fan of the Astros stealing. They're doing a poor job of it, it puts extra wear-and-tear on the guys, and the bats are potent enough that I hate to give up the outs. It might have been a necessary evil in the past, but I don't think it is now.

Cost the team a run in this instance.

Two walks and a double, nothing to show for it.
-
A's get a HBP, stolen base on a Hank Congerish throw from McCann, wild pitch, then 2-out, 2-strike single. 1-0
-
Again...WTF Marwin? How do you not score on that2-out double?
-
Fuck!
Pettis is obviously scared shitless up send a runner
-
That was a goddam hell of a catch by our boy George.
-
I'm still trying to figure out how Marwin fails to score from 1st on a 2-out double to deep center.
ETA: Against a shitty defensive team, no less.
-
5 LOBsters through three. 1-0 A's.

Maybe he tore his rotator cuff during the last home stand.

Kalas is really playing with...Fiers and risking jinxing the shit out of Mike.

Maybe when he was flailing it so wildly that he sent a runner that had barely reached 3rd when the RFer fielded a sharp liner in shallow right?

That was the specific play I had in mind.

Gattis swung at a ball at his shoes on a 3-0 count with the bases loaded and grounded into a double play.

Astros with the bases loaded, nobody out, 3-0, pitcher can't throw a fucking strike so Gattis swings at ball four at his ankle and grounds into an easy double play. One pitch later, inning over.
1-1.
-
That was the shittiest RBI ever.

Will someone please kick Gattis in the nuts.

Not even an RBI.
-
That was indescribably stupid.
-
Gattis drives me crazy. What the fuck was he going to do with that pitch at his damn shins in the best case scenario?
-
Will someone please kick Gattis in the nuts.
He should do the honorable thing and kick himself in the nuts.

No more home games.

I do not like bringing Hoyt in here.

I do not like bringing Hoyt in here.
He's been pretty shitty lately. Time for him to turn it around.

Not even an RBI.
You are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct.
GODDAMNIT HOYT

Grand slam. 5-1 A's

Well, that sucked.

I do not like bringing Hoyt in here.
Gattis and Hoyt should kick each other in the nuts.

Still pretty shitty.

They'll probably miss.
-
What a puzzling series of decisions.
-
why is Hoyt still on this team?
-
And please also kick the "name of love" guy in the nuts.

Because they're out of arms. Now Jankowski is on the DL, too.

I take less issue with the fact that Hoyt is on the 25 than I do with the decision to bring him in with the bases loaded in a tie game.

The guy directly behind Orbit is significantly more patient than I am.
-
The faith that Hinch shows in Hoyt blows my fucking mind. Maybe it's a lack of bullpen options, but, shit, that guy has been the pitching equivalent of a soiled adult diaper after five hours at an Indian buffet for weeks now.
-
Two more LOBsters. Fiers deserved better than the shitburger they've shoved down his throat.
-
Do these guys have somewhere else they need to be? They sure as fuck don't look interested in this game.

That's what I thought also. Plus Petit should have sent at least two home. Marwin and Jake (?). Put the pressure on the defense.

Hoyt owes Yuli a steak dinner.

Texas Road House or Outback may be his best options on a minor league salary.

This guy behind the plate blows.
-
Gattis is up there taking pitches all over the place now.
-
This is in the running for the worst game of the year.
-

They're playing like they spent the entire off-day drinking.
-
To the bottom of the 9th...Astros down 6-1
-
Springer Dinger!!
6-4 now...nobody out
-
Tying run at the plate, nobody out...
-
Off with the coat, Crane's getting serious.
-
Winning run at the plate, nobody out...
-
Reddick, pinch hitting, pops up the first pitch. One out
-
Holy fick this ump is monumentally choking
-
McCann GIDP to end the game.
Astros take it in the shorts 6-4
-
Strike 2 on McCann is one of the most blatant missed calls you'll ever see. My god, a fucking little league ump whose blind in one eye knew that's a ball. Then McCann has to expand the zone on 1-2. Ridiculous

14 hits, three BB. 17 Astros reach base, only four score, three of them on one swing and the other on a GIDP. Too many missed chances. And there's Hoyt...
-
Due to the all-around shitty stench of the rest of the game, that double play started by Yuli will never get the credit it's due. That was a truly phenomenal play.
-
Why the fuck did Hoyt not throw his put away slider on 3-2 after the previous FB was fouled straight back?

He threw it the first 3-2, I think, and Healy barely got a piece of it. The next pitch was the high fastball that he fouled back. I told the guys at the cigar lounge, gotta throw him that slider again, but noooooo...fastball, right down the center of the plate. Game over.
I had a bad feeling about Hoyt from the start there. Personally, I'd have let Fiers pitch to one guy with the bases loaded. But if I had to bring in another righty, it would not have been Hoyt.
-
I was very surprised by Hoyt too. Seems like the kind of "high leverage" situation you use Devo in (and can come back out for the 7th).

That's what I was thinking. You have to get an out now and not let this thing get away from you. Of course, the flip side is it was only the 6th inning. Perhaps Hinch was thinking "Even if I get out of this jam, I still have to get 9 more outs, and giving up a run or even two now won't kill me if it saves me some arm for late game" Not the move I'd have made, but it's not totally whacked reasoning. That's why it's so hard when you can't get at least 6 out of your starter.
-
Devenski combined for 3.2 IP on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe he wasn't available last night, even given Monday's off day

Every pitch he threw during the AB was on the outer half or off the plate outside. If he opted for an inside fastball on the 3-2 pitch after the foul off on the slider, I think he would have beaten him or frozen him. Healy was cheating outside by that point in the at bat, which is why he put a really solid swing on the outside fastball that eventually wound up in the bleachers. I would have preferred the slider low and away again over the outside FB, but Hoyt missed the plate by a good 6 inches on the previous 3-2 slider so perhaps didn't feel confident going back to it.

so if he walks him because the hitter lays off, one run scores not 4. the hitter fouled the exact same pitch straight back. I am with you...slider low and away or FB in, NOT FB up and away but in the strike zone.

I think the 3-2 slider he threw was a pretty good pitch. Yes it was off the plate, that's where you want that pitch to end up. You're counting on the batter chasing a pitch he can't handle, not him missing a ball in the strike zone. Healy barely clipped it to stay alive only to get two more fastballs. I would have definitely thrown the slider again after the first FB. As you say, if Healy shows the discipline to lay off, one run scores, but you start fresh with the next hitter and you're chasing one run. In short, Hoyt made the 3-2 a hitter's count when he didn't have to.
