1-0 Good guys, Top of the 2nd.
Bregman doubled in Springer in the 1st.
-
Who the hell started the game this early?
-
Who the hell started the game this early?
My phone buzzed.
I checked it.
Bregman whatnow? There's baseball before noon?
-
Coffee and baseball is different.
-
Lonnie Chisenhall vs. the Astros.
-
Paulino is 8 feet tall.

"A win today would go a long ways toward making sure the team is not losing ground."
Alan Ashby, ladies and gentlemen.
-
Way to work the count a bit Springer.

Hope he's gone next year.
-
Kemp was really shallow on that double by Kipnis..
-
Paulino is wearing Castro out back there.
-
Not watching it, but this is reminiscent of Fiers's disastrous inning against the A's.
-
Paulino is wearing Castro out back there.
Can't land the breaking ball at all.
-
Jesus Christ, Jim Joyce. How did you miss that hitting the bat?
That is horrific.
-
That's unbelievable
-
WTF?
-
Jesus Christ, Jim Joyce. How did you miss that hitting the bat?
That is horrific.
Everything about this call is fucking embarassing on this entire crew's account. How the FUCK can 4 guys miss that ball being fouled off? AND HOW THE FUCK IS THIS NOT REVIEWABLE?!
-

No kidding, and AJ is gone now.
-
Jim Joyce is a motherfucking incompetent.
The new NBA.
-
Wow
-
This game should 100 percent be played under protest. That is fucking brutal.
-
I can't believe how shitty that was.
-
What are those 4 idiots doing out there? Do you not see and or hear the ball hit the bat on that play?
-
I can't believe how shitty that was.
Jim Joyce should be fucking ashamed of himself for tossing AJ.
He fucked that up, pure and simple. And the fact that none of the twiddledicks in the field saw it was a foul ball and bailed him out is even worse.
-
I have never seen such total and complete incompetence. Four fat motherfuckers out there and no one noticed that it was a foul ball. AND they can't review it.
It's the NBA. Fuck this. Fuck major league baseball.
-
Gurriel just tied the game in a world where Jim Joyce isn't a fucking idiot.
-
Yuli G!!!
-
Gurriel just tied the game in a world where Jim Joyce isn't a fucking idiot.
This is stupid, I'm having a hard time watching this crap show after that screw up.
-
All tied up
Stros-2
Indians-2
Jim Joyce-2
-
Wasn't it Jim Joyce that totally brain farted away the Tiger pitchers no hitter a few years back?
-
Wasn't it Jim Joyce that totally brain farted away the Tiger pitchers no hitter a few years back?
Yup.
Looking forward to the tear-filled post game interview.
-
How did he call time in the middle of those 2 runners coming home as well?? What a cluster.
-
Not surprisingly MLB hasn't posted the video on Gameday yet. The Gurriel homer is up already though...
-
Cleveland fans should be ashamed for booing the ump on a strike call they don't agree with.
-
The inning should have either been over or a foul. If it wasn't foul the batter still swung with a runner on 1st. Inning over. Joyce messed that up from all angles.

With 2 outs it's a live ball even with a runner on 1st.

This game is an asshole.

Thanks. That was worse than I imagined.

Never been to Cleveland, huh?
-
I don't know how Hinch didn't just absolutely lose his shit on Joyce.
I would've made it all the way around the bases to let each of those fat pieces of shit know how fucking miserable they were.
-
True or false: Altuve's in something of a slump.
-
I wasn't really paying attention to the game until I heard MRaup yelling at Jim Joyce. Who knew sound could carry so far?
-
Jeez. I sure hope this Rogers kid isn't a big part of the plans for next season.
-
Rookies can't keep up. This is painful.
-

I'm still hoarse from the UT/ND game too.

There's gotta be a repercussion for that call on the crew right? That's rediculous.

The other side of it is that if he's ruled it a wild pitch why do you call time when runners are running the bases? He fucked that up too.
-

That's the thing. I'm as disgusted with the other three stooges as I am with Leopold Bloom over there.
Anyway, in the end it wouldn't have mattered.
-

That's what I was getting at in post 32.
-
It's amazing given how terrible our starting pitching has been the past two weeks that we haven't lost any ground.
-
Jim Joyce must be the nicest guy in the universe, or has put everyone on warning that anything over the top is a toss.
How anyone could smile at him after that fuckjob is totally beyond me.
-
Surprised AJ hasn't set that place on fire yet.
-
How anyone could smile at him after that fuckjob is totally beyond me.
Even if he doesn't care he should at least ACT PISSED OFF after a screw job like that.
-
I'd really like to have Colby back next year.
-
When he fucked Galarraga out of the no-hitter, Joyce was very sorry and felt really bad about it. That shit is old.
-
There's gotta be a repercussion for that call on the crew right? That's rediculous.
Don't count on it. Or least nothing that will be evident to the public.
-

Perfect game actually. Even worse.

I really felt bad for Joyce after that incident. And Galarraga of course.

I always thought what he did to the kid was inexcusable, regardless of the level of contrition.

If it'd been a bang bang call, I'dve felt bad. But he blew that one by a wide margin. How he's still a big league ump is beyond me.
Ironically, that call was one of the really serious examples of why the MLB needed replay. Maybe Joyce really wants foul tips/foul balls to be added now?
-
I know some of you have seen way more baseball than me. Is this possibly the worst botched call ever? Or no?

No

Probably not even the worst against the Astros.
-
Probably not even the worst against the Astros.
Well, I might beg to differ.
There are a ton of factors that make this horrific.
1.) It was VERY obvious.
2.) THE ENTIRE CREW MISSED IT DESPITE IT HAPPENING WHERE ALL OF THEIR EYES SHOULD BE.
3.) They couldn't even discern that it probably happened by the ballplayers reactions.
4.) Joyce double botched it. First the wrong call, then managing to call time and botch it again if the ball was, in fact, live.
5.) They tossed Hinch, THEN looked at the replay.
6.) One of the cocksuckers LAUGHED about it after watching the replay.
-
Indeed. Our World Series ended on--possibly--a blown call. And there was a notoriously blown call at first base in one of the 80s Astros playoffs team's games, right?
-

Well, there was the time an umpire missed a call at first that completely switched who won the World Series.

KC/Co-Ards 85 Game 6. And that one wasn't close.

What was Reed doing? Jesus

Game has re-started.

Springer walks, Bregman triples him home. Altuve up with no outs. Still trailing 10-6.

Altuve is like a distant radio station right now. Sometimes full bore, sometimes not sure at all what the hell is going on.

Bregman scores on a wild pitch. 10-7 now.

I hope he finds his way out of this slump soon.

Fuck that. They score enough runs. Can he pitch?
-
Really interesting to see how the Tribe has used Miller since getting him from NY.
-

Exactly...hard watching this team pitch.
-
So, would the runs have eventually scored after the Joyce snowjob or was it a proper 2 run rear-ending?

Chisenhall ended up lining out. So it would have been just a 2 run inning.

Next pitch was a lineout to 2nd.

Charlie Pallilo is gonna have a hay day with this.

It was obviously ruled not a swing by Joyce. I assume they appealed that to the 3B ump too, and he said no swing. Had they ruled it a swing, and Chisenhall making no attempt to advance, the inning is over, no runs scored.

I don't think anyone asked. But it had to be for his bat to make contact on an outside pitch. I thought with a runner on 1st it would have been automatic but Mark said it's live with 2 outs. Either way Chisenhall never left the box until he had to move for the convoy of Indians that was crossing home plate while Joyce was being an idiot because he knew it was a foul.

Watching the reply I think Joyce gave up on the ball when he saw it was going to hit the dirt. I really don't think he even watched it hit the dirt. I think he just expected Castro to block it. Having a foul ball off a bounced pitch is really unusual. Notice his head didn't move to see where the ball was going. He didn't remove his mask to watch the play as they all do when the pitch gets away with runners on base. If it had bounced into the dugout he'd never have known. He was beyond lazy on that play.

They should have asked for an appeal on the swing. It's a live ball with two out, but the batter has to make an attempt to advance. If he doesn't, the strikeout is considered complete. If he's tagged or forced out at 1B, the strikeout is complete and no runs score.
As for calling time out in the middle of a live ball, the ump can't do that either. We saw this last year in the post season in the game where the throw from the catcher back to the pitcher hit the bat. The ump jumped out to call time, but he can't stop play in the middle of a live ball play. "Time" doesn't go into effect until the runners reach their next base.

Except the ump should have notice the foul. He is a fuck up. All umps fuck up occasionally, others are just fuck ups.

Of course. Apparently the only four people in the stadium not watching the game were the umpires.

Game 6 in the '86 NLCS against the Mets, in the 9th inning no less. Put Dykstra on and changed the entire inning. Don't get me started.
ETA: Apparently my memory is fading, because one of the online play-by-plays that I looked up says Dykstra tripled off of Knepper. But I sure remember some call at first being blown.

It was Game 5 in NY. Fred Brocklander called out Craig Reynolds on an inning ending double play in the 2nd inning, on a play where Reynolds was clearly safe. It cost the Astros a run, and they ended up losing that game 2-1 in 12 innings.
-
There's probably a reason why that's not reviewable, but I can't think of it. Whether a pitch flicks a jersey is reviewable, but that's not?
-

Such a play was not deemed to occur often enough to warrant putting it on the list of reviewable plays. The ball hitting the bat or not is only reviewable if it involves the pitch hitting/not hitting the batter. The goal of the replay list to was to include the vast majority of disputed calls, but not necessarily all of them.
However, by this ruling, any play is not reviewable if the umpires rule that it hit something other than the bat or the batter. A batter can hit the ball into the field of play, hell even over the fence, but if the umpire rules that the batter missed it and it actually bounced off the catcher's mask over the centerfield fence, it's not reviewable.
-
A simple solution would be that any play that results in a run scoring or potentially not scoring should be reviewable regardless. A bad call can certainly derail a big inning or create one without directly causing a scoring play but a simple blanket statement like this would solve some shitty situations. I'm sure there's some side effect I'm not thinking of though.

This is basically my response to those who complain about too much replay. Limit it to plays where runs score or that end an inning.
On a side note, it's now all over the interwebs that Joyce's two most famous obviously blown calls both favored the Indians. Joyce is from near Cleveland.

No need to imply malice when simple incompetence is sufficient explanation.

I saw briefly on ESPN yesterday that MLB said it wasn't reviewable because had the play been called a foul ball, then turned out to be a wild pitch they wouldn't know how many bases to let the runners advance.
That sounds like bullshit to me. You get to advance a standard number of bases if a double goes over the wall or if a wild throw to first goes into the dugout.
-
Yes, Joyce blew it but the 3rd base ump is supposed to be watching the batter to see if he swings. That is the ump who should be taking the the most heat. It was his job to watch the bat.

I disagree. Joyce literally threw up his hands mid-play because he had no fucking clue what happened. If you're going to make a call, you gotta see it through. Who gives a damn if a player is arguing?
Hey kids, if a ball gets away from you, just start arguing with the ump, he might call time!
-
Yup.
Looking forward to the tear-filled post game interview.
perfect game on the last out.
