Bregman's first opportunity in the field was a tough hop off a liner and he made the play to retire Beltran.

I wouldn't have minded Gomez busting ass and making a drive at that flair instead of positioning for a barehanded laser from center. Springer was right there, and the ball wasn't going to run far if it got by him.

In all seriousness, when you look at a lineup if you have black holes in left at first and at catcher you have to think about these things. Of course the team's answer has been to play the single worst hitter on the club.

Gross incompetence. And the reason Altuve didn't get tossed was that Demuth knew it.

That's giving Demuth a hell of a lot of credit.

Which begs the question why he called two of them in a row.

He's was discussing how long and boring games are with Ashby and Buck the other day.

That's would be a dynamite combo.

There are a lot of forces at work making this game unbearable to watch.

Yankees have had the bloops and calls go their way today. The Astros flailed at far too many Pineda sliders out of the zone to complain though.

The defense has been sharp tonight except for Gomez

I absolutely despise Ashby's praise of good cuts when guys foul off meatballs.

Interesting fact: Evan Gattis leads all major sports in taking fat pitches to start at bats.

The MLB knows that Gomez has no chance unless you throw one off his bat.

Thank god Gomez was in center tonight. No way Marisnik hits well enough to hit in to that double play.

Runner on second with one out and all they need is a fucking base hit to tie it and Gomez swings like an absolute jackass on strike one. I've personally had enough.

Unless Marwin should be on the DL I don't see how he wasn't a better option than Gomez.

Swinging hard at the first pitch is ok. Swinging hard at a slider nearly in the dirt when a double play ends it shows a lack of situational awareness and an inability to recognize the pitch, both flaws Gomez has consistently demonstrated.

Swinging hard is one thing but taking a hack so violent that he has no chance in hell at making meaningful contact is another. I have no doubt Gomez cares about the team and his career deeply. He certainly shows it with the effort he puts out. But at some point you have to be able to rely on your training and talent and not take at bats like Animal from the Muppets.

He's always been that way and he isn't changing now. Luhnow knew what he was buying.

Ryan Madson giveth and he taketh away. Gives up a 2-run jack in the 9th to Smiley Beltre to give the Rangers the win.

Isn't the season over for you?  You said they gotta take the last 2 against the A's.  They didn't so I guess in your world they are eliminated

You're the one that keeps dropping must win scenarios in July.  You should take your own advice

Yeah in order to be where you want to be come playoff time you have to keep winning series'.

But not every series is a "must win." If they lose they're next 3 series they'll still be in it.

Yes I agree. But I feel like this one and the next we can and should take because come August the opponents get a little tougher. So we don't want to be in that position.

I agree they are not necessarily must win series, but I want them to win (or sweet baby Jesus sweep) so they will know they can easily beat teams with winning records.

The only game the Astros need to worry about is tonight's game.
