I would expect Feliz to replace Shirley if they are only going with 5 starters.

Probably so, and Monday would be Feliz's next day to pitch.
-
James Hoyt tonight: 1 IP 0 H 0 R 0 ER 0 W 4 K.
(and 1 WP)
-
Shirley back at it:
5 3 0 0 1 4 0

Feliz with the start tonight. Hope he bounces back strong.

Nope. 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 3.1 IP.

Danny Worth, who hit the heck out of the ball in ST, is continuing to do so in the regular season for the Grizzlies. He's 3-3 thus far today in an afternoon game and has hits in all 9 games he's played in for Fresno. Now hitting .472/.524/.861.
A.J. Reed went deep this afternoon, his 3rd longball in the last 5 games.
-
Hey, show a little love for Mr. Kemp and his smoking start (391 B.A.).
Singleton is in a giant hole. 0-4 with 4 Ks. Ugh.
-
After playing in a couple of games for the Grizzlies, OF Leo Heras was "loaned" to the Red Devils of the Mexican League.
-
Singleton is 4-4 tonight with 2 homers and 3 RBIs

Astros prospect Brady Rodgers posted a #Maddux in AAA tonight, a CG shutout on 86 pitches, and now has 2 BB in 30 IP this year.
-
Danny Worth 3-3 with a double and 2 walks. Now hitting .367/.454/.578.

I love Tyler White, but I can't see why he isn't at Fresno and Worth is. It seems like taking Chapman, Peacock, or Asher off the 40-man would be worth it.

If they needed a SP not on the current 25-man I suspect Peacock would be him. As mediocre as Chapman is he would probably be up if Sipp went down. Asher?

Wojo.
You're right, I just don't see them as being as good as other Fresno options or former options (Straily).

RHP Asher Wojciechowski placed on 7-day DL, retroactive to May 6. RHP Cesar Valdez will come out of Grizz bullpen to start tomorrow at EP.

Jake Kaplan reports (http://www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/Luhnow-Promotion-to-Class-AAA-imminent-for-7423821.php?cmpid=twitter-desktop):
"A promotion to Class AAA for Astros pitching prospect Joe Musgrove is "imminent," general manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday, so much so that the 23-year-old righthander may make his next start for Fresno. Luhnow reiterated Monday he's not afraid to promote pitchers from Class AA directly to the major leagues but said he currently does not see an opening for Musgrove in the Astros rotation. That could change as the season wears on, of course."
-
Might have noticed in the box score from last night's game A.J. Reed coming out of the game after legging out an infield single. Pulled a hammy on the play and has now been put on the DL.

I'd assume this puts him ahead of Peacock in the pecking order

Story has definitely changed on this:
"I think Joe will be pitching for us this year," Luhnow said Monday. "I'm confident of that, if he continues to do what he's doing especially. So I do think a move to triple A is probably the next step for him in his progression."

Another great outing this afternoon for Joe Musgrove, throwing 7 innings of 1-run ball with 7 whiffs and no walks (82 pitches, 61 for strikes). Over 9 outings this year between AA/AAA, 49 strikeouts and just 5 walks in 44.1 IP.

James Hoyt does not want to be a 30 year old Grizzly.
In 27 innings this season he has struck out 44 batters and has a 1.67 ERA. Over his last 10 games (11.67 innings) he has 19 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 hits, and no runs allowed.

Would that make him a grizzled veteran?

Mr. Rodgers with another fine piece of work (8 IP 2 H 0 R 0 BB 8 K). A very sweet 66 K/8 W in 68 innings for the season. Leads the PCL in WHIP (1.04), 2nd in ERA (2.90) and strikeouts.
(BTW, Tim Lincecum blanked the Grizzlies over 7 innings tonight allowing just 2 baserunners while whiffing 8. Next start likely to be as a member of the Angels rotation.)

I wonder if Rogers has moved ahead of Musgrove in the first callup to go into the rotation if they need/desire one.

Garrett Stubbs has quietly put together a quality first half offensively.

I wonder if Rogers has moved ahead of Musgrove in the first callup to go into the rotation if they need/desire one.
Maybe. Rogers is 2 years older. This is also his second season in AAA spanning 195 innings pitched. Musgrove has just 29 innings pitched at AAA.
-

I remember reading an article that quoted Luhnow as being quite high on Rodgers. Of course that was prior to last season. A season poor enough that they didn't bother to protect him on the 40-man. Of course they didn't protect Devenski either

Luhnow has always been high on Rogers. After that draft he was interviewed on the radio and Rogers was one guy he was very enthusiastic about being almost ML ready.

Actually, I saw Wallace last weekend when we went to the Rockies-Padres game at Coors. He's playing 3B for the Padres, and he is not cutting a svelte figure.

There's been a promotion from CC to the Grizz and no it wasn't Bregman, Teo or Paulino. It was...
Brendan McCurry. Had been lights out for the Hooks and was leading the TL in saves.

I'm sorry but the Fresno Roster is insane. 9 position players on the 40 man, that doesn't include Teoscar, Bregman, Kemmer or Hieneman. DeFrancesco is going to have a tough time on a nightly basis making players happy

Fresno up 21-2 in the 7th inning.
Make that 23-2 in the 8th.
Tucker has 3 bombs and 8 rbi. Teo and Bregman both 4-5. White is the only hitless starter but he's scored 3 runs.

Okay, somebody has to mention it. Bregman popped #3 and #4 last night. (http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20160705&content_id=188024504&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb) Just an absolute tremendous start. 1.665 OPS over 5 games. Teoscar hasn't exactly been a slouch with a 1.221 OPS over the same 5 games.
Oh and that Hoyt fella that just missed the team. 72 Ks in 41 innings. .139 avg against with a 0.87 WHIP. Hoyt's biggest problem is his age.

And send down who?
Sipp.
-
Sipp.
Sipp just had two excellent years in MLB and is in the first year of a 3-yr, $18m deal. They are not going to cut him based on a handful of bad outings, unless for some odd reason they're convinced he's totally lost it. Plus, he's the only lefty.
I think Hoyt would be in Houston if anybody goes on the DL; otherwise barring a trade it's hard to see it any time soon.
-
I wonder why Bregman is still getting most of his experience at short. Seems like if he is to help this year, some more experience at wherever he will play might be judicious. Unless he will be the DH.

I wasn't suggesting releasing him but sending him down to work on getting it together but you make a good point. I didn't realize he was on year one of a 3 year deal. You win the argument.

Superb outing (8 IP 2 H 0 R 1 W 9 K) tonight for Mike Hauschild against a pretty good offensive club in Reno.
Hauschild (2.77), Brady Rodgers (2.88) and Cesar Valdez (3.43) running second, third and sixth in the PCL in ERA. Rodgers (1.14) is 3rd in WHIP while Valdez (1.17) and Hauschild (1.17) are tied for 5th.

FWIW, the scouting report on the telecast tonight for Rodgers:
Low 90's FB
Solid command
Vastly improved slider
Highly competitive
Mike Leake comp
Seven batters he faced tonight: GB, K, GB, FB, K, HR, K.
Hauschild showed that nice sinker in his 1-2-3 inning in B6 (two weak GBs and a K).
Hoyt gave up a pair of singles on a couple of fastballs (at least one of which was left up in the zone) in his 1/3 of an inning.

Was there ever an article of what went wrong with White after week 1? Did the league make an adjustment? Did he screw up his swing? When he went down to triple AAA his first 10 or so games were exactly the same, but man he fixed something in a hurry. Last 10 games: 17 for 38, 7 HRs, 16 RBIs, 4 BBs and 4 Ks. Just absolutely on fire.
-
White had a great game after he had struggled for awhile. He hit two home runs and a double. Hinch benched him two out of the next three games. Hinch killed any momentum White might have had coming out of his slump.

Hinch was probably just playing White against LHers which they well may have not seen for a few days. He tried to put White, as he does with all of his role players, in a position to succeed. Now, an argument can obviously be made against that but it was the way he was going to be used.

I never saw much of him in the minors nor remember his early ABs this year, but by the end he was frequently turning back on pitches down the middle. No matter where the pitch was, he would turn like the pitch was going to hit him. He may have done this all his life, but maybe this was a bad habit he developed and has now overcome. Or maybe, he is just facing easier competition and isn't under pressure, so he is performing better. Wouldn't be the first guy to melt under the lights and regain his stature upon demotion.

I noted this in the game thread last night, but he was scheduled to pitch against RR at the Dell last night but was a last minute scratch due to injury. No further word that I've seen.

Went to the game tonight. Hadn't read much on Musgrove other than his command, so I had little expectations. Seems to throw both a two seam (low 90s) and a four seam (mid 90s), not much swing and miss in the FB, but it's not meat either. Has a slurvy slider which he leaned on heavily. It's average or slightly above in break and shape, but he commands it so well that it was a money pitch. He can bring it in for strikes or start it over the plate and get chases. He threw it a ton and I recall only one guy squaring it. I think Gallo is still swinging at it. He has a change he is not afraid to use, but it is just average. Overall, he didn't wow, but the more I saw, the more impressed I was.
Hoyt throws a slider without much break, but at 90. FB high 90s. Looks like he might help.
Bregman looked good at the plate. I've tried to not be impressed, but he looks good and could help the club now. Only had one grounder hit to him, low throw to first and a Singleton saved him.
Teoscar didn't have a hit, but looks to possibly have more power in his future. I'm still real bullish on him.
Tucker's swing still looks long to me, Singleton didn't look good, White still looks on the edge to me. Kemmer squared one, but didn't impress me as much as last year, Kemp made some weak contact, but certainly has had better games.
Smallish crowd, but very Astro heavy. Very encouraging.

Gustave hits 100 on the gun; routinely 97/98 with a ?slider? In the mid-to-high 80s. Some hard hit balls to go with the Ks though.

White actually handled the hot corner pretty well. Robbed one batter of extra bases by spearing a liner to his right and handled a few tough chances from the SS position with the shift on.

Bregman in left again
As far as I recall, he had no chances in the field. They pitched around him so nothing with the bat either. A solid deep fly was all he could manage in 4 trips.

Are Mayfield and Bregman the only SS on the roster? I just don't get this fascination they have with trying guys like Moran, Duffy, and Brett Wallace at SS on a AAA roster. I would think it's not well-received by the pitchers, for one thing.
Now with White at SS tonight, I think they're just fucking with us.

When Jack Mayfield got injured the other night, they called up Chan Moon from CC.
I assume it's more about getting ABs for certain players including White.

Who said anything about Houston? I'm talking about AAA pitchers being told to go pitch and let their fielders help them out, and one of the most (if not THE most) important fielders being Tyler fucking White, at SS.
Mike hauschild has taken up the challenge. 5 Ks through 2 IP so far.

They're lucky Bregman & Co didn't boycott the game.

30th anniversary tribute to the Three Amigos.
There's been much worse promotions at minor league parks.

Mike hauschild has taken up the challenge. 5 Ks through 2 IP so far.
...and from my alma mater. Been keeping an eye on the kid as such. Great year last year and continuing to step up.

Fresno wins this one 4-3. Hauschild 6.2/7/3/3/1/10 2.89 ERA at end of game.
White with his 11th HR, Stassi with his 6th. Bregman was hitless.
-
Stassi's homer was a walk off, here is a pic of him as he approaches home plate.

That's big screen worthy.

I am disappointed they didn't all do the 3 Amigos "dance" at home plate.
-
Who said anything about Houston? I'm talking about AAA pitchers being told to go pitch and let their fielders help them out, and one of the most (if not THE most) important fielders being Tyler fucking White, at SS.

You do not understand the point of minor league baseball. It is not winning or losing.

I realize it's not. So you don't think Tyler White, Brett Wallace, et al playing SS in AAA is a tad ridiculous?

Ridiculous, maybe, but the skipper has to fill out his lineup card using the players who are on his current roster.
-
Recently, I assumed it was an injury coupled with Bregman needing experience elsewhere, but last night I don't know why he didn't use Moon at SS and Kemp at 2B. Maybe they were low on outfielders as well.

how about ABs for White.
-
Yeah, that reason makes as much sense as any other.
-
how about ABs for White.
For all we know another team asked to see his versatility.
-
Shirley has been unimpressive too.
So much so that they released him today.
Other moves: Fontana back from CC, Edison Frias also comes up from the Hooks, Jack Mayfield to the DL.
-
The Tyler White utility-man experiment continues: with 3 games under his belt at SS in the past week, he played outfield tonight for the first time in his professional career.
Came into the game batting .329/.404/.658 in July.

Marwin 2.0

showcasing.

showcasing.
Exactly.

It is hard to envision a place for White on the Astros going forward. Even if they still believe in his bat, well, he can only play 1B or DH, and you've got to have a LH bat or two in the lineup somewhere.
Altuve 2B
Springer RF/CF
Correa SS
Bregman 3B/LF
Gurriel 3B/LF
You're pretty much guaranteed to have RH batters at 5 of the 9 spots. I have no idea who will be catching in 2017, but it's highly unlikely to be a dangerous LH hitter. That leaves CF, 1B, and maybe DH (depending on Gattis) as realistic spots for a productive LH bat. I think they really need AJ Reed to claim one of those spots, and maybe a free agent lefty for another. Obviously, L/R lineup balance isn't the end all be all, but it doesn't leave much room for White.
-
Exactly.
Why wouldn't he be in LF/1B/3B then? If they're showing him off and all

I'm sure Jim and Bob mean that they're showcasing his bat.

After another stellar outing tonight, Brady Rodgers now leads the PCL in WHIP (1.08) and is 2nd in ERA (2.59).
Has only allowed 4 HRs on the year in 108 IP.

Someone tell Budgirl so she can give her seal of approval on a Rodgers call-up.
Also, damn! Teoscar Hernandez is killin' it in AAA. Another big night last night - HR, 2B, single. Now hitting.326/.381/.547 in 26 games since his promotion.

Teoscar may be the most pleasant surprise to me this year.

Huh, that's kind of surprising. I was under the impression that he's been mired in a slump for the last month or more.

INF Keach Ballard moves up Lancaster to fill in.

Gurriel 2/3 so far tonight with a 2-run HR. He is DHing.
-
David Paulino up from CC.
-
26 year-old Eury De La Rosa, who saw some major league action in 2013-2014 with the D-Backs, was signed out of the independent leagues and immediately thrown into the fire as tonight's starter and got burnt to a crisp (7 runs, 10 hits, 4 IP).
-
Reports are that lefty Evan Grills has been called up from CC and will pitch tomorrow. David Paulino gets tonight's start.

After being named PCL Pitcher of Year this morning, a healthy Brady Rodgers was pulled after 2 IP, 0 H, 4 K. Infer what you will.

He certainly deserves a spot on the expanded roster.
