Local HS team is AA and was playing a AAA team on the road tonight.
Son came into pitch with the team down 2-1 in the 5th.
Has a 123 5th,
Then leads off the 6th with a double to left center in his first at bat of the night. Courtesy runner runs for him and comes around to score on a nicely executed bunt to tie the game at 2.
Sixth, he allows two hits but strikes out a good hitter on three pitches to get out of the jam.
One of the Sr's dad looks up at me and yells "talk about coming of age" - My son is a 10th grader.
Bottom of the 7th his is facing the 3,4,5 hitters.
He hits the first batter.
Sac bunt moves him to second.
Hits the third batter.
Next kid grounds out to first.
Two down runners at 2nd & 3rd.
Pinch hitter is announced.
Coach comes to the mound tells son - "don't be afraid to pitch inside."
1st pitch hits the kid.
Bases loaded - 2 outs.
Something has to happen now.
1st pitch called a ball - coach reacts - thought it was a strike. Ump said low.
2nd pitch foul - 1-1
3rd pitch foul - 1-2
4th pitch ball - 2-2
5th pitch ball (all of our fans react - really wanted that strike) 3-2
6th pitch hits batter.
Run scores.
Game over - a 3-2 loss.
Son said his fastball was running in on RH hitters and they started crowding the plate. He said I tried to adjust but it kept running in.
I asked what the coach said and he said - "He told me 'good job'".
He added one of the seniors said, "if it wasn't for you, we are not even playing the bottom of the 7th. Keep your head up."
Just needed to share this and remind us all that baseball is a hard game. Beautiful but hard.

It sounds like his coach and his teammates appreciate his efforts. It can be a very difficult, humbling game. Tell him to continue to smoke 'em inside. A pitcher has to own that inner black because it sets everything else up.

Tough loss. Sounds like coach and teammates reacted well, but it's still hard when you're in that position.
My guess is next week the coach and he will talk about why his pitches were running inside and work on that.

Thanks for the reassuring words. He has handled it well. It helped that he played 1st in the JV game the next day (son is a 10th grader). Getting back on the field is aways good medicine.
Coach saw me at the game and said, "How's your boy?" We talked for a while. He got excited talking about his stuff that night. He said he kept calling the fastball because he was getting them out with fastball. He said" he pitched great for two innings" and "he has made so much progress this year." He spent more time talking about the good he saw that night than the final inning.
I have yet to hear this coach blame any loss on any one player or any one facet of the game. He is truly a team win/team losses coach. We are 8-2 right now with our two losses coming to teams that are a division above us. We are 3-2 against those higher division teams right now and 5-0 in our division.

Another CG win for son Friday night against a good team from Virginia. 7 IP/ 6 H/ 1 R/1 ER/3 K/ 1 BB. 86 pitches, 24 balls put in play with 20 of them on the ground. His infield played great behind him. Lots of weak contact. Team was fast. 4 of 6 hits were infield hits.
Opposing coach was berating his team. At the end of every defensive inning, he would gather his entire team one the first baseline and talk to them. Son could hear what he was saying- in summary. " You have hit better pitching than this kid. What makes this SOB so special? How about we have a f-ing approach at the plate "
Home plate ump was former Major League Ump Dale Ford. Our coach talked to Ford after the game. He said son's FB was showing late arm side run.
After the game, he volunteered this info. He said "I am doing better because I am pitching a little out of control. I am not trying to be too fine." Good lesson to learn
Line for his sophomore year so far:
11 games/ 2 starts
26 1/3 IP/ 20 H/9 R/6 ER/ 5 BB/ 18 K/ 4 HBP
3 -1/ 1.60 ERA/ 0.949 WHIP/ 3.46 GO/FO
Team is currently 18-4 and ranked #5 in the state. In 13 of the games, they have allowed 3 runs or less. Good pitching and good defense.

You are kind. He probably won't be included in that thread. Velocity isn't MLB caliber(low-mid 80's FB). However, this year is showing him he might have a chance to pitch in college if he wants to.

Excellent to learn that so young. I got well into my life before I learned that (and still fail at it on occasion)

If he's, what 16 years old, throwing mid 80s with control, there's plenty of time to add 5 mph to his fastball. I would guess college scouts are already talking to him.

He turned 16 in January. No scouting yet, He has really blossomed this year. He was throwing 77-80 at the start of the season. His velo has really grown as the season has gone along.

That's still excellent for just turning 16. Even low 80s is well above average for a HS pitcher. If he continues to develop and can command more than one pitch, expect a lot of interest.

Another kid learned a lesson tonight.
We won a game on a walk-off error by the catcher. We get the lead off runner on. With the runner going, batter strikes out swinging at a ball in the dirt. Batter takes off for first. Catcher panics. After looking to second, he makes the unnecessary throw to first. The first baseman isn't ready for it and it goes into the RF corner. Runner scores from second. Ball game.
Catcher is a freshman. Felt for the kid.
BTW - the batter didn't take off out of strategy. He didn't it out of habit. He had no clue he was out because 1st was occupied. Good thing he did.

Complete game 3 hitter today. Team wins 3-1. 7 IP/3 H/1 R/ 0 ER/1 BB/ 5 K - 71 pitches. 12/2 GO/FO. Has moved into the #2 role on the team. Great defense behind him today.

The cool part was the game last night was at Pioneer Park. He has been watching Gstros games there since he was 4. Now he has pitched on the mound there.
He told me after the game, he was over throwing because he was so excited.

I had similar feelings pitching at Disch Field in HS. I had watched Austin Senators and Braves games for many years too.

Turns out our ace's shoulder was injured in the dog pile after the win to go to state.
So my son was the starter for the first state tourney game in school history.
They lost 3-2 in 10 innings. My son pitched a complete game in the loss. 10 IP 8 H 3 R 1 ER 6 K 1 BB 130 pitches. He made two errors on pickoff throws that both eventually scored.
All in all not bad at all for a sophomore on a very big stage. There were several college coaches in attendance watching other players. So he has been seen now.
Thanks for letting me brag and commiserate here. It has been a fun season. Full of lessons.

Separate lesson:
My son is the youngest in his league, and thus has played RF most of the season, with occasional (blowout) appearances at 2b. Last night, he was asking every inning if he could go play 2b.
In the 4th inning, a run scored when our 2b was playing with his gum instead of getting ready for the pitch. So, did my son get his shot at 2b?
No - because he hadn't been paying attention in the outfield.
Hopefully he learned the lesson - you always have to be prepared for your chance.

That's right. The dogpile is overused for things like walkoff wins and tournament championships. I always reminded the players of the injury risk that came with being at the bottom of the pile. That never stopped some youthfully exuberant idiots from hurling their bodies onto the mass with nary a thought of hurting someone else.

Congrats to Duman the Younger. From what you've shared in this thread, you should expect a lot of interest from college coaches the next few years. Tell him to enjoy it, and to keep his grades up.

Here is the game story from Tuesday's game.
I think the coach was surprised by the dogpile. They had acted pretty calm after every other win.
I felt bad for that pitcher. He missed the regional semis last year with mono. We lost that game to end the season. He was a part of two good seasons but wasn't available for the final games each year.
