Lineup card (https://twitter.com/MarkBermanFox26/status/654391624487735296)

Keuchel in the portion of the card generally reserved for unavailable pitchers.  But I wouldn't place much value on that.

It looks like Altuve is dipping his back shoulder slightly on every swing.

From my layman point of view it seems like Altuve has embraced that aggressive reputation fully this postseason. But with all things Altuve that can change with one at bat. He's had great at bats before.

When the sound goes out plug your earphones back in.

And take them out when you order another drink otherwise you'll be shouting at the flight attendant.

Zobrist strikes out on the curve!   -- They said he only struck out once in the series
Cain takes it to 3-2 fouling off a few-  Castro having issues handling the curve in the dirt.
And an excuse-me swing nets a single to right.
Hosmer bloops one to center and Cain scores as Gomez falls on his ass.   Cain is fast.
Morales fouls out to Altuve in short right.
Moustakas down quickly 0-2, ball, foul, foul pop up to short left.. Rasmus runs it down.

Astros still lead 2-1 after 4.

Gattis 1-2 strikes out on a high fastball
Valbuena.. Cueto seems to want nothing to do with him..  popped him up to Hosmer 10 feet from home in foul territory
Carter 0-2 quickly, ball low, foul straight back, and strikes out on a slider.

Astros up 2-1 middle 5

Hinch needs to make DVD's of the KC at-bats and make everybody watch them in the off-season.

Cueto still pitching

Correa - ball outside, off-speed strike,  flare caught by Zobrist with a leaping backwards grab
Rasmus - strike, strike swinging, ball outside, swinging at outside pitch.. down on strikes. 2 out
Gomez - ball, foul, strike swinging, outside, ball up and in, foul,  grounds out 5-3

2-4 Royals.

This game reminds me so much of Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN200410210.shtml).   Astros get off to an early 2-0 lead but fail to score again, give up half their lead in one inning, then 3 more runs in a middle inning, and lose in MIssouri.

I fully expect the Royals to get an insurance in the 8th to win even bigger.  Hell, the Astros never even got a hit in that game after 0 outs in the 4th, and brought in their best starter (Oswalt) in relief and he gave up insurance.

Sipp remains on the bump

Perez - strike, strike swinging, ball up and away, pop up, Carter takes it.  1 out
Gordon - check swing foul,  foul, slider in the dirt, got him swinging  2 out

Neshek in to face Rios

Rios - Strike, foul ripped to right, foul back, ball up and out, ball up, got him swinging to retire the side.

Astros still chasing 2 into the 8th.  Time to bring out the Orange Whoopass!

Nobody watches the games but you, dude. We rely on you for all our information. Which is convenient because no one else understands the game like you do, either. For example, I always thought there were nine guys batting in a lineup rather than one five foot Venezuelan.

Chuck, after all these years, I do not deserve this from you. You can apologize for "fuck you" on PM, but you must.

I don't see the point of it.

The only guess I have (and if they were going to use him then use him before Fiers) is that maybe Hinch is trying to inspire his troops before the 9th?....

It feels like the bullpen use this game is reactionary -- a response to public criticism -- after two months of shaky relief outings. The quick hook on McHugh feels that way, as does bringing in Keuchel down by two runs.

Oh, fuck, I can see it now: Lowrie pinch-hits for Castro, reaches base, somebody homers to tie the game. And then in the bottom of the 9th, somebody reaches base, they pinch-run Dyson, he immediately steals 2nd and 3rd on Conger, and then scores on a passed ball.

Bottom 8

Keuchel pitching

Escober gets a bat on it and it squirts into the RF corner.  He's standing on 2nd.
Zobrist - ball, ball, lined to Altuve who ends up on his back but makes the play.  1 out
Cain gets the IBB
Hosmer - foul, half swing.. strike called by HPU, fooled the ump.. called a ball.   inside, held up, ball, foul, popped up to Castro in foul territory down the 3rd base line.  2 out
Morales - foul, foul, ball outside, curve called a ball, Home RUN

7-2 Royals.   Game over.

Moustakas takes 3 balls and watches a strike, lashes one foul grounds out to Correa on the right side of 2nd.

Carnage over.

I disagree on McHugh. He wasn't sharp and looked in trouble.

McHugh was on a razor's edge for at least his last two innings. Too many hitters counts, the walks, no curve, it was going to catch up to him. I have no problem pulling him then.

This is why I didn't want Keuchel out there on short rest. I really didn't want his last outing of the year to look like this. I would have much rather gone through the off-season with his last start being that capstone of the season.

Davis pitching to Tucker

Tucker - ball, ball, strike, strike swinging, down swinging 1 out
Altuve - ball, grounds out 6- 3 2 out
Springer - Just misses it.  F 9.

No, it was. If Altuve had been on base a few times this postseason, Springer and Correa see better pitches to hit.
And if Gattis had done anything other than continue to swing and miss at any pitch within 2 feet of the zone, Rasmus might not have been walked so much in key situations.

I get it. I'm disappointed in Altuve too - he was awful. I just see it as one of many reasons the Astros lost the series.

You've got a hard on for Altuve. It's weird. The Astros scored runs. He could have helped score more runs. But what we saw in this series is that if you're not going to score a ton of runs, your bullpen pitching better be perfect. More than good, more than lucky, perfect.

It's irrational that the same person that cried and whined at the slightest criticism of Gomez obsesses over Altuve's poor performance over the last few games.

The most important games of the year and he is 0 for the last four games.

Blame the bullpen and excuse Mr. 200 hits

You've got a hard on for Altuve. It's weird. The Astros scored runs. He could have helped score more runs. But what we saw in this series is that if you're not going to score a ton of runs, your bullpen pitching better be perfect. More than good, more than lucky, perfect.

Perfect ain't happening, Goofy. Altuve is a selfish player who cares only about his hits.  His ofer four games and bullpen failures and KC's luck sent us home.

It was brutal for Altuve to be not even a slight factor in this series games 2-5. The bullpen also had tough luck and occasionally sucked balls. There were shitty AB's by Gattis. Reactionary decisions by Hinch. Plenty of other blame to go around. It's gunna sting for a few months. Then we'll hear about some moves Luhnow is considering and we'll all start to get excited again. Before you know it we'll be watching a better team take the field and that team will have learned some fucking shit from these last two weeks.

And hits a ton. That's the way some players play, and Hinch clearly is going for swing wild, swing free. Did you say this shit about Bagwell? He was just as bad in the post season.

I get that he has poor plate discipline and there are areas that he has a lot of room for improvement. I get that he had a bad series. I just don't understand how that translates to him not caring about anything but his hits, to not caring about his team, to not caring about winning. I do think he cares about his hits but also likes to score runs, steal bases, and win.

Altuve was the one guy on this team who was talking postseason back in March. He is probably crushed by his shitty performance. Maybe blames himself as well. And it was shitty, a good team can overcome a shitty performance by one player, maybe the Astros aren't that good yet. I think they overachieved.

The story of this post season is Altuve and the bullpen and Hinch's pitching decisions. We won two, let two get away, and lost this one tonight.

If Altuve is a superstar, he must come up big in big games. He was 0 for games 2-5.

Altuve, Gattis and the bullpen all had a rough series. On the flip side of the coin, the Royals are a pretty good team, as indicated by winning the pennant last year and having the league's best record this year. Their hitters top to bottom work the count and adjust their approach better than any team in baseball. And Johnny Cueto pitched the game of his life tonight. The Astros could have pulled it out, but didn't. They lost to a really good team. They got further than anyone thought possible. And it won't be another 10 years until they make the playoffs again. I'm feeling about as good after a playoff defeat as I can.

This is the first year my 8-year-old has followed the team passionately. He was crying after the game. I explained to him that the Astros made the playoffs the first time when I was eight years old, losing a five-game series they could've won. Then they didn't do it again until I was 14, then not again until I was 25, and they didn't win a playoff series until I was 32. I told him I don't think he'll have to wait as long to see them in the playoffs again, and that I'll be there watching every game with him. The next question out of his mouth was, "How long is it until Opening Day?"

In the end, the Astros won two games, lost two games, and the Royals won one game. I'll take that as a decent showing for this young crew.

Royals - Blue Jays will be an entertaining series. I'll be watching for sure.

no one, including me, blamed one player for losing the series. I actually do not believe the Astros lost it as much as KC won it with outstanding ABs. there were failures, including huge ones, perhaps in part because they never had been under that kind of pressure before. All will be better next year because of the experience. Star players need to play like stars on the big stage. one of ours did not.

ETA: Gil Hodges, one of the greatest players ever, had a World Series quite similar to Altuve's ALDS. Shit happens and does not diminish the player's greatness.

Do you think Luhnow's philosophy of his offense will change at all during the off-season?  The homeruns are great, and they are a huge reason the Astros got this far, but there are times where they are completely shut down.  A team like KC, for example, seems to be battling every at bat, and good things seem to happen.

My question as well.  Is the second half of the lineup how the Astros are always going to be (well he's got holes in his swing,  but he's got some pop),  or were some of these guys the best we can do for now?  Are Springer and Correa going to be taught selectivity or told to mash at all costs?

Based on who I have seen drafted, and developed by him, I honestly don't think this is really his philosophy.  Instead, I suspect it is more a result of who he could get through trade or free agency, and who would also fit within his budget.  We will know soon enough.

I also make a distinction between those who have no discipline and likely never will (Altuve and Gattis), those who have discipline but swing and miss a lot because they lack solid contact skills or have a hole (Valbuena, Rasmus, Carter and possibly Castro) and those who have good discipline, have good contact skills, but swing out of their shoes too often (Gomez and Springer).

Although Altuve is here to stay, I'd be surprised if there wasn't some movement of players within the first two groups.

This is almost exactly what I would have written. The closest way to reading Luhnow's mind is to look at the players coming into the organization through the draft.

They need to spend some time on shortening up to make contact on 2-strikes.  The Royals bleeped and blooped us to death during the series, but they did so because they made contact - often when down 2 strikes - whereas the Astros made whooshing noises.

These are kids; they'll learn and get better*.

To me, this was the biggest difference in approach between the two teams. Protecting the plate with 2 strikes. How many Royals' at-bats did we see 9, 10, 12 or more pitches? It was frustrating but impressive at the same time.

It's hard to believe after watching this series, but the Royals were dead last this season in pitches seen per plate appearance.

To me, this was the biggest difference in approach between the two teams. Protecting the plate with 2 strikes. How many Royals' at-bats did we see 9, 10, 12 or more pitches? It was frustrating but impressive at the same time.

yes, it was. their ABs were unreal.

another reason for some hard-throwers in the pen. I wonder if Velasquez and/or Feliz will be tried out in the pen next year.

Gustave throws upper 90's and had better control this season.  I expect to see Feliz there as well but not Velasquez.

I feel like Velasquez can be a good starter and should only go to the pen if A) he fails as a starter or B) he's going to the pen for the playoffs

If they like Gustave they will need to add to the 40 man. Surely he'll get picked again and maybe stick this time.
