Pretty weak first inning against a guy making his first ever start in professional baseball

Making his first start.  Ever in professional ball.  Which means there's a good chance the Astros get shut out.

Nice try at the reverse jinx, but you have to bring it stronger than that when you're working with Valbuena.

Carter has been better of late, but I still can't get into any lineup that features both Valbuena and carter.

They should record that inning and play it back to young professional baseball players "See here youngsters, this is why you don't play wound up too tightly... you have to play much more relaxed to make the plays in this game". Not the best time for the Astros to have tight nerves. Not good at all.

Add sliding to the video because apparently this is the first time Carter has ever slid

I want to be careful not to get Chuck wound up here... but why did they take so long to overturn it? Is it that same guy in New York who had his head up his arse on the call last week on Correa's steal? The fact that they finally overturned is not the point (he was clearly out because he left the bag), but sure looks suspicious when they take so long. Are they trying to figure out who they want to screw the most in the Home Office?

Eta: although his situation was somewhat different because his lead leg positioning toward the bag approximated a blacked out frat bro trying to stuff a softy in the dark.

T5:

Valbuena homers to RF
Carter...3-1...3-2 on a pitch bouncing in the other batter's box..walks
Castro doubles off the CFer's glove, Carter to 3B...challenge at 3B...out because Carter is a dumbfuck and easily gets to the general vicinity of 3B, but inexplicably slides at some imaginary base instead of the actual bag and has to fumble around to try to find it.  Meanwhile the throw comes in and he's tagged out.

That's it for Guaipe, Kensing in

Altuve doubles to RCF, Castro scores
Springer singles to RF, and Altuve stands there with his thumb up his ass watching the play, and finally makes 3B
Correa...quickly down 0-2...grounds to 2B, and Cano swipes and miss it as it rolls into CF, Altuve scores, Springer to 3B
Gattis, swings at a bouncer, takes a meatball, down 1-2...swings at a pitch 40 feet outside for the punchout.

Kensing out, Rasmussen in

Rasmus strikes out looking at a pitch in his eyes.

The Astros get three runs, while fucking themselves out of two more.  Lead 3-2

I'm pretty sure f*ck will be mines first words... Would've bet, however, that it'd've been the result of my watching Baylor football or my wife watching Kentucky basketball (the latter of which I'll certainly attempt to shift the blame to) rather than Astros baseball, but whatever...   In any event, glad Castro didn't f*ck that one up - would've resulted in a wakened baby and my being banned from watching the rest of the game (and a bed on the couch for the evening)... Go 'Stros!!!

Cano, on the other hand, is simply not Astros material.

Cruz strikes out swinging
Cano bounces one right to SS..oops, shift on, it's another hit for Danny Valen...oops Robinson Cano
James Jones in to run for Cano
Gutierrez, who apparently was unaware he was up, finally gets in the box, and lines to CF, Jones had his head up his ass and Gomez guns him out at 1B!!!

Stand by it. Outside of situation specific match-ups that favor having both of them in the lineup, I would prefer to balance out the high K rate of one in the order by having a better OBP/contact hitter than I would having both Valbuena and Carter. Couldn't be happier that both Carter and Valbuena went deep last night, but it doesn't change my opinion that I'd generally rather have Marwin (or Lowrie if healthy) at 3B when Carter is at first.  Right now, Carter should be in the lineup nearly every game.

When Kazmir gave up the back-to-back jacks, I decided that I had to take one for the team and turn it off. I was afraid that I had already waited too long, but apparently I hit the power button just in time. The good news for the Astros is that I have to go to a party Friday night so I'll miss that game, but they're going to have to overcome me watching them on Saturday and Sunday.

Never heard a direct explanation, but I assume it was related to his injury.  Might have tweaked it during that AB or earlier in the game.  Or, maybe his head was somewhere else.

I think it's safe to assume he couldn't swing.  I don't think he was that situationally unaware.

I was thinking if he's hurting why is he staying in. Obviously what ever hurt when he swings doesn't he throws. That was a cool was to end the game.

He's clearly in too much pain to swing the bat.  It's amazing to me that his injury prevents him from swinging, but he can run, dive, slide, and throw without any problem at all.  I'm not a doctor, and I've never stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, but it would seem that an injury to such a core muscle would affect more than just swinging.

Not sure of the exact nature and location of the injury, but swinging a bat has a huge upper body rotational component that runner, diving or throwing do not.

I wonder when was the last time a player went 11+ triples and 27+ homers in the same season.  I thought for sure Curtis Granderson would have done it, but he hasn't.

ETA:  It was 2007 Jimmy Rollins, with 20 triples and 30 homers.  Grady Sizemore went 11 and 28 in 2006 and Nomar went 13 and 28 in 2003.  Gattis is only the 4th person this century to do that.

I know there was the whole Beatles/Lynird Skynird thing, but I was a Beatles guy.

This brought back memories of times when one of the local radio stations would run a Beatles v CCR poll it seemed like every weekend.  Beatles always seemed to win but I would have gone CCR if I could be bothered to vote.
