Did we mention this is a must win?
As usual, fuck the lineups, gotta get his one...here we go...
-
Never heard of Zych before, which means over/under on hits is 2.5.

T1:
Altuve...quickly down 0-2...pops out F6
Springer flies out F8
Correa strikes out swinging at a pitch in the dirt in the LH box
Pretty weak first inning against a guy making his first ever start in professional baseball
No score.

Making his first start. Ever in professional ball. Which means there's a good chance the Astros get shut out.

B1:
Marte flies out F9 at the track
Seager flies out F8 at the track
Cruz grounds out 4-3
Quick 7 pitch inning for Kaz
0-0

Kazmir looks like he's throwing BP in the first but no saltwater donkeys reach.

Gomez looks ready.

Astros with runners at the corners with one out for Valbuena...
We're toast.
-
T2:
Gattis lines the first pitch into LF
Rasmus carved up on three fastballs right down the center for a swinging strikeout
Gomez singles to RF on the first pitch
Valbuena...3-1...3-2...Valbuena strikes out swinging as Gomez steals 2B
Carter grounds the first pitch to 2B for a 4-3
0 for 2 w/RISP. Imagine that
No score
-
We're toast.
Nice try at the reverse jinx, but you have to bring it stronger than that when you're working with Valbuena.
-
Carter has been better of late, but I still can't get into any lineup that features both Valbuena and carter.

Valbuena needs to quietly exit right and it's only been 1 and 1/3rd.

Valbuena must have thought he was hitting with runners on base.
-
HIt, error, walk and wild pitch...M's with runners at 2B and 3B with one out...

I'm waiting to see what happens to Jim's phone if Rasmussen pitches to Rasmus.

Big out.

Big out.
Which of course means they won't get the last out of the inning without more hijinks. Seattle 1, Houston 0 on the third defensive miscue of the inning.

Monumental dick stepping...passed ball plates a run
And, another two-out base runner for the M's.
-
And, another two-out base runner for the M's.
Error by Gomez. Crooked number for Seattle.
-
That's rich: Ashby ragging on the offense that Seattle has gotten out of the catcher position.
Have these guys ever played the game before?
-
Single to center scores another, Gomez drops it to let the runner move to 3b.
Stick a fork in 'em.

You gotta expect hits from sugar Jesus.

B2:
Cano flairs the first pitch into LF for a single
Gutierrez strikes out swinging
Trumbo pops up to 3B in foul ground, and Valbuena drops it...E5 and Trumbo gets another swing...and walks, Cano to2B
Wild pitch, and Cano to 3B, Trumbo to 2B
Montero grounds out 6-3, runners hold
Passed ball, Cano scores, Trumbo to 3B
O'Malley walks
Sucre singles to CF, Trumbo scores, O'Malley to 2B...Gomez kicks it and O'Malley to 3B on the E8
Marte grounds out 5-3
M's get two unearned runs on two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball...lead 2-0

A's 8, Angels 7, Angels batting in bottom of the ninth, runners on first and third, 2 outs.

Oakland beats the Angels. Astros and Angels both at 83-75. Twins at 82-76.
-
They should record that inning and play it back to young professional baseball players "See here youngsters, this is why you don't play wound up too tightly... you have to play much more relaxed to make the plays in this game". Not the best time for the Astros to have tight nerves. Not good at all.
-
A's win.
That was just not major league defense.
My 8-year-old's team had cleaner innings this spring.
-
Apparently if the Astros don't make the playoffs the Yakuza will kill their families... otherwise I can't explain why they're playing so tight and miserable.

If you stuck coal up their asses, you'd get diamonds.

They would have had to take my Pony League coach to the hospital after that.
I am deeply ashamed that I ever thought Jason Castro would be a good big league player.

Fortunately, Seattle is playing sloppy too. Let's see if they can actually plate a runner on second with two outs.

And Wonder Woman strikes out on three pitches, stranding Springer.

T3:
Castro blown away by fastballs
Altuve pops out F6 on the first pitch...again
Springer with an infield single on a slow roller to SS, and Marte throws it into RF, Springer to 2B on the TE6
That's all for Zych...Guaipe in
Correa...quickly down 0-2...punches out on a belt high hanging curve..
0 for 3 w/RISP, 5 strikeouts.

Three innings, three LOBsters.

They're getting shut out by Johnny Wholestaff tonight, aren't they...

Such a pile of slapdickery. At least kazmir's ERA is safe.

B3:
Seager drilled in the back on the first pitch
Cruz strikes out looking
Cano grounds into the ol 3-6-1 twin killing
2-0 still

The BBGs can see straight into your heart. There is no deceiving them.
Yep. Everyone's cards are on the table these days.

Same here.
I know. I often think of you when I get annoyed with Castro. I remember our having a very optimistic conversation about him years ago.

Even Craig Biggio winced at that last swing by Gattis.

Good to see Colby with absolutely no sense of urgency

You could see it coming as soon as the pitch left the pitcher's hand.
-
T4:
Gattis...full count...strikes out swinging at the ol' 58-footer three feet off the plate
Rasmus singles on a Texas Leaguer to CF, Rasmus lollygagging or he'd be at 2B
Gomez grounds into easy 6-4-3 double play
2-0 M's

I remember that. I told you that he was going to be Houston's #3 hitter for many years. Boy, how wrong was I. And I didn't even consider his defense being a major problem too. *sigh*

These guys are playing like they were herded to the ballpark at gunpoint...

I want to be careful not to get Chuck wound up here... but why did they take so long to overturn it? Is it that same guy in New York who had his head up his arse on the call last week on Correa's steal? The fact that they finally overturned is not the point (he was clearly out because he left the bag), but sure looks suspicious when they take so long. Are they trying to figure out who they want to screw the most in the Home Office?

Alright, inning over, time to spot the M's a couple more runs.
-
T5:
Valbuena homers to RF
Carter...3-1...3-2 on a pitch bouncing in the other batter's box..walks
Castro doubles off the CFer's glove, Carter to 3B...challenge at 3B...out because Carter is a dumbfuck and easily gets to the general vicinity of 3B, but inexplicably slides at some imaginary base instead of the actual bag and has to fumble around to try to find it. Meanwhile the throw comes in and he's tagged out.
That's it for Guaipe, Kensing in
Altuve doubles to RCF, Castro scores
Springer singles to RF, and Altuve stands there with his thumb up his ass watching the play, and finally makes 3B
Correa...quickly down 0-2...grounds to 2B, and Cano swipes and miss it as it rolls into CF, Altuve scores, Springer to 3B
Gattis, swings at a bouncer, takes a meatball, down 1-2...swings at a pitch 40 feet outside for the punchout.
Kensing out, Rasmussen in
Rasmus strikes out looking at a pitch in his eyes.
The Astros get three runs, while fucking themselves out of two more. Lead 3-2

Sucre singles to LF, his third on the night and fourth on the season, I think
Marte singles to LF, Sucre to 2B
Fields out, Sipp in
Seager pops out F6
Still tied at 6

DId Ashby cry yard on that pop up?
-
Kyle Seager must be the ugliest baseball player ever. I think he plays a mean banjo though.

Watching this crowd is special, isn't it? That's what real rivalries are all about.
-
T7:
Danny Fuckwad on the mound for the M's...
Correa taps out in front of the plate on a pitch that almost hits his face...out 2-3
Gattis triples...naturally...Villar into pinch run
Rasmus, infield in...3-1...flairs one to LF...Villar scores
Gomez...down 0-2...bunts foul at a pitch in his eyes for a strikeout
Valbuena doubles to LF, Rasmus to 3B
Carter strikes out swinging
Astros regain the lead 7-6
-
There was so much in that half inning I didn't understand.
-
That bunt strikeout by Gomez has to go down as one of the more bizarre things I've seen this season.
-

Just remember this: Carter strikes out swinging.

Always good to find that anchor point.

That is a sweet swing. Christ, Castro is horrible.

Maybe over the winter they'll trade for Congar.

B7:
Cruz strikes out swinging
Cano doubles down the RF line, but he legs it into a single
But the next pitch is wild, and Cano moves to 2B
Gutierrez strikes out swinging
Hinch out...gonna leave Sipp in
Trumbo with a roller towards SS, Valbuena does a good job blocking Correa from having a shot...infield single, Cano to 3B
Miller flies out F9
After seven...7-6 Astros
-
I am so sorry.

Altuve flies out F8, Ashby crying yard
Springer grounds out 6-3
7-6 Astros

Well played sir! [And thanks for the PBP - having to miss an inning here and there for diaper changes, and the occasional 'you need to take a time out' for yelling at the TV and waking up the baby (who incidentally has been prohibited from watching this game for fear it will forever ruin his understanding of good baseball fundamentals...). Okay, some slight exaggerations there, but thanks for the PBP nonetheless...].

We went 2.5 innings without changing a diaper or feeding him during the Fiers no hitter. Guilt got the better of me before the 9th, however, and allowed my wife to feed him - not sure which one of you sacrificed the chicken to make up for my transgressions, but I appreciate it nevertheless...

What do the metrics say about that? Does that make Correa a bad defensive DH?

Perez will have to get the 5th out of the inning, thanks to Correa's two errors.

Now Correa. There must be something in the water up there.
I think he still may be wearing those wonder woman underpants. He must of had a super wedgie when he threw the ball. It's the only explanation.

This inning is going to murder his unshifted VZxWRP.
-
B8:
Will Harris on the hill...defensive changes...Marisnick in LF, Marwin at 1B
O'Malley grounds right to SS, Correa displays some of that UZR and boots it...E6
Sucre...full count...flies out F9
Marte grounds to 2B, O'Malley is out 4-6, but Correa throw the relay into the seats, moves to 2B on the TE6, Correa's second error of the inning
That's it for Harris, Perez in
Seager pops out F5 on the first pitch
Headed to the 9th...7-6 Astros
-
I'll take that. Nice move by Hynch.
-
One pitch!
-
Mr. Castro... any questions how we play a pop-up when the third baseman and you are going after the ball? No? Okay then... let's get some runs.

On the other hand, Valbuena's is skyrocketing.

I'm pretty sure f*ck will be mines first words... Would've bet, however, that it'd've been the result of my watching Baylor football or my wife watching Kentucky basketball (the latter of which I'll certainly attempt to shift the blame to) rather than Astros baseball, but whatever... In any event, glad Castro didn't f*ck that one up - would've resulted in a wakened baby and my being banned from watching the rest of the game (and a bed on the couch for the evening)... Go 'Stros!!!

Cano bounces one right to SS..oops, shift on, it's another hit for Danny Valen...oops Robinson Cano
James Jones in to run for Cano
Gutierrez, who apparently was unaware he was up, finally gets in the box, and lines to CF, Jones had his head up his ass and Gomez guns him out at 1B!!!
Game over, Astros win 7-6!!

Regardless of this games outcome I'm glad Cano isn't an Astro. I dislike watching him play baseball even when it's "effortless".

I was sort of feeling a DP there but I didn't quite envision that.
I had a message ready to post about Gregerson, ground ball pitcher, need a double play ball, but Astros have committed three errors tonight... yadda, yadda, yadda... then BAM! Whaaa? No, seriously... WHAAA?

You need to stop reading the next morning and start smacking people in real time.

Stand by it. Outside of situation specific match-ups that favor having both of them in the lineup, I would prefer to balance out the high K rate of one in the order by having a better OBP/contact hitter than I would having both Valbuena and Carter. Couldn't be happier that both Carter and Valbuena went deep last night, but it doesn't change my opinion that I'd generally rather have Marwin (or Lowrie if healthy) at 3B when Carter is at first. Right now, Carter should be in the lineup nearly every game.

Boy, is that ever a story. No, but there are related issues not worth discussing here.
-
Which reminds me, does Direct TV let you watch games on the computer, even in market? Has that been discussed here?
-
When Kazmir gave up the back-to-back jacks, I decided that I had to take one for the team and turn it off. I was afraid that I had already waited too long, but apparently I hit the power button just in time. The good news for the Astros is that I have to go to a party Friday night so I'll miss that game, but they're going to have to overcome me watching them on Saturday and Sunday.

No. DirecTV does not stream regional sports networks.

Gomez was great last night and you know he isn't full speed. With the exception of the struggling Neshek the pen seems to have found its' second wind.

Never heard a direct explanation, but I assume it was related to his injury. Might have tweaked it during that AB or earlier in the game. Or, maybe his head was somewhere else.

I think it's safe to assume he couldn't swing. I don't think he was that situationally unaware.
-

I was thinking if he's hurting why is he staying in. Obviously what ever hurt when he swings doesn't he throws. That was a cool was to end the game.
-
He's clearly in too much pain to swing the bat. It's amazing to me that his injury prevents him from swinging, but he can run, dive, slide, and throw without any problem at all. I'm not a doctor, and I've never stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, but it would seem that an injury to such a core muscle would affect more than just swinging.

Not sure of the exact nature and location of the injury, but swinging a bat has a huge upper body rotational component that runner, diving or throwing do not.

It may not be pain as much as risk avoidance.

When he went from third to the dugout it seemed to me that he was joking with his teammates and pointing at his feet like "I'm the fastest guy on the team! Why take me out?"

I wonder when was the last time a player went 11+ triples and 27+ homers in the same season. I thought for sure Curtis Granderson would have done it, but he hasn't.
ETA: It was 2007 Jimmy Rollins, with 20 triples and 30 homers. Grady Sizemore went 11 and 28 in 2006 and Nomar went 13 and 28 in 2003. Gattis is only the 4th person this century to do that.
