Correa grounds out 4-3, Springer scores
Gomez doubles down LF line
Gattis strikes out looking
1-0 Astros
-
B1:

Valencia grounds to 2B, but with the shift, no one is there, single
with Lawrie at the plate, Valencia is picked off...score it 1-3-4
After one...we're tied 1-1
-
Interesting interview with stassi on the radio pregame. Comes from a long family tradition of pro ball players. His great uncle played with Yankees and became great friends with Ruth after decking him in the clubhouse after babe wouldn't stop chirping about an error great uncle stassi made.
-
Amazing that no matter how badly he has struggled this year, pitchers continue to pitch carefully to Carter.
-
double and walk for the Astros have two on, no outs
-
Would be nice if KK could locate his mojo back in the Bay Area.

Playing a lot of small ball with a guy that seems to be struggling....working though
-
T2:
Marwin singles over the LFers head, LFer bobbles it, Marwin to 2B...guess it's ruled a double
Carter walks on four pitches
Stassi...showing bunt...sac bunt, out 5-3, Marwin to 3B, Carter to 2B
Marisnick sac fly to VERY shallow RF, Marwin scores...Reddick didn't think Marwin would go and got caught flat footed
Springer flies out F8
Astros regain lead 2-1
-
Springer's emphatic safe call on the tag play at the plate was my highlight of the game so far.
-
Really nice bunting technique by Stassi. So many guys jab at bunts nowadays and screw them up. And it pays off with a run by Marwin (who was pretty fortunate still to be alive after nearly getting picked off second earlier in Stassi's AB).
-

Trying to score runs when you get the chance. The Astros have really been struggling to get runs across when they get RISP. They've now scored two runs without a hit because they've played small ball.

Was he running straight in on the play?
-
Was he running straight in on the play?
A little bit toward the line. The bigger problem was Lawrie (or whoever's playing 2nd) was there, too, and cut in front of him. In fact, it wasn't immediately clear to me who caught the ball, only that it hadn't fallen to the ground.

aye, just a total change from the all or nothing strategy.
-
Was he running straight in on the play?
No...he was tagging, but the second baseman was going out and Reddick was coming in...couldn't tell who was going to catch it. Reddick ended up catching it basket style. Marwin started then stopped then started again. Reddick caught it and went to lob it back in, when he realized Marwin was running. Had to start and start again on the throw home. It was a perfect throw, he just got caught not anticipating the runner going.

Lawrie snatched at it right as it came down in to his glove. Was a really ugly looking play.
-
As a side note, Buster Posey is a surprisingly natural commercial actor.

And, I'm sure this comment won't hold up under any intense analytical scrutiny, but this team seems to perform better offensively once they have pushed a couple across like it reduces the pressure.

Queue the Carter haters
-

Well, his natural profession just going by his name is porn. So he's got a career after baseball.
Oh for fuck's sake, Carter. Just get injured so I don't have to watch you play anymore.
-
Holy shit. Took his eye off the ball
-
B2:
Lawrie singles to LF
Butler flies out F8
Smolinski strikes out swinging
Phegley with an easy popup in foul ground, Carter drops it...E3...Phegley gets another chance and pops again to foul ground, but Carter's can't get to it...another chance...flies out F8
2-1 Astros
-
Neither here nor there, but Ashby even can make Feirs' no hitter sound uninteresting.
-
Holy shit. Took his eye off the ball
The showed a slow mo replay and he watched the ball all the way into...well off of the glove. Taking his eye off wasnt the issue.
-
T3:
Altuve grounds out 6-3
Correa lines out F8
Gomez flies out F8
Quick thirds inning...Astros up 2-1
-

In his defense, the angle of the shadows makes me think that the sun might have been pretty tough there. Still...

The glove got in his way.
-
You know what the Astros have been this year?
-
This drum crap is really annoying.

This is the best drummer video ever.

B3:
Semien grounds out 6-3
Burns singles to LF
Canha strikes out swinging as Burns steals 2B
Reddick flies out F8 at the track
2-1 Astros after three
-

To be fair, he is playing out of position. Moved to first to make room for Gattis
-
I want to know more about the decision of the guy behind home plate to put on a t-shirt with two mustachioed cartoon men on the front.

T4:
Gattis grounds out 6-3
Marwin singles up the middle
Carter pops out F4
Stassi strikes out looking
2-1 Astros
-
Holy crap. 13-inning 193 pitch Complete Game by Don Wilson.
-
Jim Wolf has laser robot eyes. That was damn impressive.
-
Holy crap. 13-inning 193 pitch Complete Game by Don Wilson.
I didn't know he was still playing.
-
Good lord. fuck you Gomez. That was fucking trash.
-
These must be the Astros who don't have direct tv.
-
Well, shit, that looked a lot more like the A's out in the field than the Astros.
-
Getting some good swings against Fiers

Fiers has hung a few today.

The pace of this game is pretty slow, but it would be easier to tolerate if Asbhy didn't bitch about it every three minutes.

Are these guys getting too much rest? May be hard to keep sharp with the breaking stuff?

I think Feldman fixed that problem for them.

Probably bad framing.

B4:
Valencia with a leadoff walk
Lawrie singles to LCF...Gomez lets it go by him, rolls all the way to wall, E8...Valencia scores, Lawrie to 3B...holy shit, ruled a triple. Ridiculous
Butler strikes out swinging
Smolinski...infield in...strikes out swinging
Phegley flies out F9
But A's get what should be an unearned run to tie it at 2
-
This scorer is a moron.
-
I would be interested to hear the bunt strategy rationale, but I'm digging it.

Ashby jinxed the fuck out of that pickoff.

Holy fuck, how is that not a balk!?
-
Dammit Jake.
-
T5:
Marisnick bunts, Phegley picks it up, throws it in the dirt...TE2...what the fuck..ruled a hit.
Marisnick steals 2B without a throw as Phegley drops the pitch
Springer lines out to RF
Marisnick picked off...1-5-6-1 on the very definition of a balk.
Altuve grounds out 5-3
2-2
-
Holy fuck, how is that not a balk!?
Atrocious no call.

Holy fuck, how is that not a balk!?
Just get rid of the balk rule. It's enforced so inconsistently that it's a net loss.
-
Holy fuck, how is that not a balk!?
This guy balks on every throw to 1B and every throw to 2B. If that's not a balk, then there is no such thing.
-
I wonder if Ashby gets a daily review of his performances?
-
B5:
Semien strikes out swinging
Burns flies out F8
Canha walks after taking strike three and strike four
Reddick flies out F7 in foul territory
2-2 still
-
I wonder if Ashby gets a daily review of his performances?
Not from anyone who actually listens.
-
I hope that Bregman turns out alot better at the ML level than Russ JOhnson did.
-
T6:
Correa grounds out 4-3
Gomez singles to RF
Gattis strikes out swinging on a bouncing change up
Gomez steals 2B, even though it was a big time balk and the throw went to 1B
Marwin lines out to RF..
Still 0 for today with RISP
2-2
-
Jackie Bradley Jr seems to have figured it out this summer. Since August 9th he's hitting .446 with 24 EBH. Fuck HanRam, with Bradely, Castillo and Betts, the Red Sox have a really good young outfield.
-
The Astros have hit a number of hard shots right at the fielders today.
-
Fiers out after two straight walks to leadoff the 6th...Josh Fields in.
-
A's with bases loaded, nobody out...
-
If only we had Fields.

2-run double..4-2 A's...runners at 2B and 3B, still nobody out.

Man, Fields has been horrible lately. That was straight up grooved.

Fields hasn't gotten guys out since he came back

I would have a quick hook on Fields today.

100 percent on Altuve. You've got to initiate the contact, you can't just assume it's interference because Altuve decided to stutter-step.

I would have a quick hook on Fields today.

Someone's gotta take a beating today. Might as well be Fields.
-
This is terrible.
-
I am straight up disgusted with the Astros this inning.
Some seriously shitty baseball.
-
GET FIELDS OUT OF THE FUCKING GAME.
-
That's it for Fields...Thatcher in...A's lead 7-2, have a couple runners on and still just one out.
-
Someone's gotta take a beating today. Might as well be Fields.
Maybe now. I would have pulled him for VV once he loaded the bases when the game was 4-2. He couldn't locate at all.

-
What a mess.
-
Bases loaded again with one out, as Thatcher can't hit the side of a fucking barn.
-
And now they can't turn a more-or-less routine double-play. Some days everything just goes wrong.
-
B6:
Valencia with another leadoff walk
Lawrie walks on four pitches, none of them within 3 feet of the plate
That's it for Fiers...Josh Fields in
Butler singles to LF...Marwin gave up awfully early...Valencia to 3B, Lawrie to 2B
Crisp to pinch hit for Smolinski...doubles off the RF wall...Valencia scores, Lawrie scores, Butler to 3B
Phegley grounds out 5-3, runners have to hold
Semien...infield in...the number 9 hitter...walks to load the bases
Burns...infield still in...chops one just out of Altuve's reach, as he stops to let Semien by...Butler scores, Crisp scores, Semien to 3B
Hinch out to argue interference, but not going anywhere.
Canha singles to RF, Semien scores, Burns to 2B
Field out, Thatcher in
Reddick walks...the fourth of the inning
That's it for Thatcher...Velasquez in
Valencia grounds into FC, Reddick out 6-4, but Altuve's throw on the turn is wide and high, Burns scores
Lawrie strikes out swinging
Inning mercifully comes to an end. But A's now lead 8-2
-
When the bullpen implodes, which hasn't happened much this year, it takes me back to the shitty old days.
-
So Villar is PHing for Carter?
Fun.
-
Villar! Leadoff homer cuts the lead to 5

The day just gets weirder.

That ball was destroyed. I'm surprised it didn't unravel before it got to the fence.
-
T7:
Villar, pinching hitting for Carter, homers to LF
Stassi singles up the middle
That's it for Doubront...Rodriguez in
Marisnick strikes out swinging... had no chance
Springer walks on four pitches, Stassi to 2B
Altuve reaches four feet outside swinging with one hand and pops out to RF
Correa homers to LCF, Stassi scores, Springer scores
Gomez with a soft liner right at second baseman
3 hours later, we're finally at the stretch...A's up 8-6
-
He really is amazing. Twenty years old.
-
He really is amazing. Twenty years old.
The scout that got him signed should be really proud.
-
These walks are fucking killing me
-
These walks are fucking killing me
So are the homers.

Seriously?
Fuck you, bullpen.
Fucking brutal.

Phegley with a 2-run homer...lead back to 10-6

Bullpen has been brutal.

Butler walks on four pitches
Crisp flies out F7
Phegley homers to LF, Butler scores
Semien walks on four pitches
That's it for VV...Feliz in
Burns grounds out 4-3, Semien to 2B
Canha strikes out swinging
10-6 A's
-
They'll need to burn the tapes of this game.
-
So Villar is PHing for Carter?

I still can't understand Carter's purpose on this roster.

T8:
Pomeranz in for the A's
Gattis pops up to 2B, Lawrie drops it, E4...Gattis ends up at 2B because he ran it out all the way
Marwin flies out F7, Gattis tags and moves to 3B
Villar grounds out 4-3, Villar scores
Lowrie, pinch hitting for Stassi, singles to LF
Marisnick homers to LCF, Lowrie scores
That's it for Pomeranz, Mujica in
Springer pops out...Canha runs it down somewhere in Nevada
But...Astros cut it to a one run game
10-9
-
It would be nice if the bullpen put up a zero here.
-
In case you were wondering, the A's first baseman can catch foul pop ups.

Conger needs to settle the fuck down back there. He's all over the place.

How exciting was that?
I noticed all the lights were flashing on and off the it popped and there was a flash of light, then it died.
-
B8:
Feliz still on the mound, Conger now behind the dish
Reddick pops out F5
Valencia with ANOTHER walk
Lawrie lines out to RF
Butler grounds out 5-3
We head to the 9th...Astros chasing a run
-
Bah.
-
T9:
Doolittle on for the A's
Altuve pops up the first pitch, F4
Correa pops up the first pitch, F4
Gomez...takes two meatballs right down the pipe...strikes out swinging at a pitch over his head
Astros get 11 hits, including 3 HRs, score 9 runs....and lose.
-
That was the single shittiest ending to a game I've seen in a REALLY long time. Altuve's lack of game/sitautional awareness just breaks my brain sometimes.
-
Well, that one's on the bullpen. You shouldn't lose when you score 9 runs.
-

I was almost disappointed that Altuve was leading off that inning. I knew he'd be hacking at whatever was thrown up there.
-
Well, that one's on the bullpen. You shouldn't lose when you score 9 runs.
Nope, but you look back on a couple of plays...the RBI "triple" that Gomez let get past him cost a run. The "single" by Burns that snuck past a hesitant Altuve after you bring the infield in because you don't think you can double up Burns cost two runs. The double play you didn't get on a bad throw that scored a run...there was only one error, but they didn't exactly throw the leather around today.
-
That place is kind of a house of horrors for the Astros. When I was young it was Connie Mack Stadium in Philly were they could not win.

And I seem to remember San Diego being a disaster in the 80s, but that may be selective memory.
