Nice to see Lowrie back in the lineup instead of back on the DL.
-
Astros plate two in the first frame, and they're still hitting.
-
Gomez stayed on that pitch nicely instead of swinging out of his heels. Good job of hitting.

Smoltz took a couple of jabs at Gomez for styling.

Yeah, you know how I feel about his on-field behavior.
-
Smoltz took a couple of jabs at Gomez for styling.
I bet no one had seen Smoltz and HH in the same room.
-
RBI double by Valbuena and single by Marwin make it 5-0.
-
I like this game so far.
-
My first trip to New Yankee stadium. Quiet here so far.
-
My first trip to New Yankee stadium. Quiet here so far.
Let us hear you!
-
Altuve swings at the first pitch after the walk to end the inning. Guy throws 40 pitches in the inning, but Altuve only sees two of them and makes two easy outs.
BUT....Astros have a terrific inning, hitting the pay station five times, all with 2 outs.
-
I was the only guy clapping.
-
Does Keuchel wear hiking boots? He's not related to Sid Finch is he?
-
See if I can recap...
Altuve flies out F9
Lowrie strikes out looking
Correa walks
Rasmus triples, Correa scores
Gattis walks
Gomez with a hustle double, Rasmus scores, Gattis to 3B
Valbuena doubles, Gattis scores, Gomez scored
Marwin singles, Valbuena scores
Castro walks, Marwin to 2B
Altuve grounds into FC, Castro out 3U
Astros 5. Yankees 0
-
B1:
Ellsbury singles to LF
Young lines out to CF
ARod grounds into FC, Ellsbury out 5-4, but turn pulls Valbuena off the bag
Texeira strikes out
After one....Astros up 5-0
-
T2:
Lowrie flies out F8
Correa lines out to 3B. That ball was smoked.
Rasmus flies out F8
-
B2:
Beltran flies out F8
Headley strikes out swinging
Murphy singles to CF
Gregorius, who was born in the Netherlands, strikes out swinging
End of two...5-0 Astros.
-
T3:
Gattis flies out F9
Gomez lines out to CF. Another good swing.
Valbuena lines out to CF
Every out has been blistered. Good sign
5-0
-
B3:
Ryan grounds out 1-3
Ellsbury grounds out 4-3
Young strikes out looking
Through three..5-0 Astros
-
Altuve took a pitch!
-
Altuve took a pitch!
Several of them!
-
T4:
Marwin grounds out 4-3
Castro singles to LF against the shift
Altuve walks, Castro to 2B
Lowrie grounds into FC, Altuve out 4-6, Castro to 3B
Correa flies out F9
-
Every time I see A-Rod running down the first base line all I can think about is him knocking the ball out of the glove that time.
-
Correa looked good, but Texeira surely was slow.
-
I'm thinking an outfielder might have gotten that.
-
B4:
Rodriguez grounds out 4-3, lallygagging down to 1B
Texeira grounds out 6-3, lallygagging down to 1B
Beltran doubles off the wall in LCF. Marwin looks really awkward
Headley grounds out 4-3
After four...Astros up 5-0
-
My first trip to New Yankee stadium. Quiet here so far.
What are you wearing?
-
El Oso Blanco!!
-
damn, that was a nice hit by gattis.
-
Striped astros polo. Front row of 3rd deck halfway into right.
-
I was the only guy clapping.
I saw one guy stand up in triumph after the Caveman bomb. Are you wearing a bright pink shirt?
-
More boisterous now. Mostly 'pull him already!'
-
You know I love to triumph.
-
Striped astros polo. Front row of 3rd deck halfway into right.
Camera caught a guy sitting by hisself wearing the current Astros home jersey, eye glasses and a cap I couldn't identify.
-
Marwin!!!
Two homers in the innning.
-
You know I love to triumph.
are you triumphing again?
-
El Rey!
-

Gattis homers to LF, Rasmus scores, Gattis scores.
That's it for Nova. Someone named "Remoulade" in
Gomez grounds out 5-3

Marwin homers to RF
Castro doubles off the RCF wall...inches from another dinger

Remoulade balks Altuve to 3B, Lowrie to 2B
Correa strikes out on a check swing
Halfway...Astros lead 9-0
-
I gotta go on the PBP
I'm thinking we should take up a collection to send Homer to Yankee Stadium again tomorrow.
-
You know I love to triumph.
And pink. I was sure it was a match.
-
I think Yankee fan is tiring of the triumphing
-

I'll cover a $12 hot dog.

Don't change a thing, but don't get thrown off the third level.
-
I gotta go on the PBP

I'll drop $5 on that
-
Come on, Gomez, don't be a putz. That's the kind of shit that can get somebody else on your team hurt.
-
Put some mustard on that hot dog.
-
Cargo is an asshat.
-
What the fuck are you guys talking about? He was angry that he missed the pitch and was chastising himself. McCann, the real asshat, bitched at him from the dugout because he is a stupid neck. Fuck McCann and fuck Djankee.
-
Come on, Gomez, don't be a putz. That's the kind of shit that can get somebody else on your team hurt.
He's winning friends again, I see.
-
Plus, if you're getting your ass beat you should just keep quiet.

From what I can tell, Gomez show boated his double and then told the whole dugout to shut up.

BS he does that shit constantly. He is a fucking peacock..
-
I gotta agree with Chuck. For one, I didn't think it was much of a bat flip, especially after an out. Gomez pretty much knew it was an out and was pissed at himself. I don't care if CarGo makes any Yankee friends.

Showing the other team up, whether directed at yourself or at them, will generally get that reaction.
-

Bullshit. What is up with you and him?
-
From what I can tell, Gomez show boated his double and then told the whole dugout to shut up.
I didn't see the first inning but telling Djankee to shut up seems like an eminently defensible policy. And anyway, the fracas started after a weak fly out. Djankee needs to shut up.
I cannot believe that I of all people am defending the Astros to you necks.
-
Showing the other team up, whether directed at yourself or at them, will generally get that reaction.
I don't think he showed up the other team on that play.
I get it, you don't like him. I do think you guys need to be honest about his behavior.
-
Showing the other team up, whether directed at yourself or at them, will generally get that reaction.
Yeah, if the other team is a bunch of asses. He did not show up the Yankees. He was pissed at himself. 2 or 3 of you folks are on a mission.
-

I'm on no mission. I've make no secret that I do not like Gonzalez, think he's a dick, and do not want him on this club. You think the way he conducts himself is entirely appropriate. OK.
-

Get your players right. Gomez. Unless you have a problem with latin/Hispanic players.
-
Bullshit. What is up with you and him?
I don't think it was obvious because the camera cut away quickly, but he threw his bat away very aggressively as if to say "there's no way you should have got me out with that pitch". That may or may not be true, but when you're up by a bunch, it's just not bright to show up the other side. Especially when they may still have Oberholtzer in the back of their minds. I don't want anybody else taking inside pitches off of their wrists.
-
I don't think he showed up the other team on that play.
Being that demonstrative when you make an out is considered so.
I get it, you don't like him. I do think you guys need to be honest about his behavior.
I've never hid my feelings about him. You're off base here.
-

That was just a dig to make it a little lighter. If I really thought you had a problem like that I wouldn't have tossed it out like that.
I just disagree with you about Gomez. Go figure, someone disagrees with you.

Hey guys! Did you see that Gomez bat flip! Man, that was some great stuff!

Accusing someone of racism generally doesn't lighten the discussion. And I get that you don't think there's anything wrong with the way he conducts himself.

That was a pretty good at bat by Carter until he reverted to his natural suckitude.

I have no problem with Gomez did. Guys throw bats, beat the ground, ect after an out all the time

I love how the Astros having a 9-0 lead against the Yankees and everyone seems to be pissy.
I know HH is not a racist. I apologize for offending him and anyone else.

Bases loaded for Rasmussen.

Per Jayson Stark, Keuchel trying to become first pitcher to throw back to back shutouts vs Yankees since 1981.

Why? You can't be playing the Intriguing Ashby Drinking Game.

Keuchel's at 87 pitches? He better not bitch about run support.

maybe McCann will pitch the 9th.

Tools like McCann are a part of the problem, not a part of the solution.
White good ole boys have their own special ways of showboating and attention whoring.
But they do it "for the good of the game" so that makes it OK...

Ryan forgets to cover first.

What a refreshing way to win. They should try this more often

Baseball Gods hear that shit.

7 or 8 runs in the top of the 9th ought to do it.
To be extra safe, Gomez can hit one into Monument Park and then circle the bases on a unicycle...
-

I thought it was 8, but who knows? After a while the pain is so intense that the details blur.

I think it's time to discuss the guitarists in the Yardbirds. Apparently Clapton left because he was at that time a blues purist, and was replaced by Beck, who fit in best with their direction. An argument can be made that Beck was the best Yardbirds guitarist, without being the best guitarist.
-

As a lawyer, you know that an argument can be made for damn near anything. That doesn't mean it's a winning argument, or even a rational one.

And apparently they all have hardons. Or at least semis, I reckon.
-
Get Carter off the fucking field before he hurts somebody.
-
15-1. All right Pots. Next no-hitter, you have to post it's a no-hitter every inning.
-
if correa got injured with those throws then I'm blaming pots.
-
The idea that Chris Carter puts on a uniform and occasionally plays for the Houston Astros is bizarre and a real testament to either the stubbornness or the arrogance (or both) of the front office.
He is statistically the worst offensive player in baseball and I have seen nothing to disabuse me of the idea that he is (by far) the worst defensive player.
-
Is Carter trying to kill Correa?
With a 15-run lead in the 9th, just get the easy out.
-

No, that's Carter. And I like Carter.
-

I think he's usually a dependable defensive first baseman. Neither of those two plays were smart given the situation, however.

LaTroy Hawkins just came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th for Toronto against Texas. Apparently his middle name is Methuselah.

I thought maybe the first throw he was trying to turn the double play. Except for the throw of course.

LaTroy Hawkins played with Kirby Puckett, who played with Chris Speier, who played with Willie Mays.

Carter has been a good defensive player. You cannot play once a week and stay even close to sharp.
I do not give a fuck what you folks think of Gomez' "reputation." He is on the Astros now, and his team obviously accepts him. Maybe some of you hardasses should too.
-
Good grief Rangers fans are irritating. They seem to think every pitch is a strike.

There are also lots of people who think Gonez is potentially a great player. Hope so.
-
Carter is a terrible defensive player. It amazes me that people want to believe otherwise.
Of course with his offense there is no debate. He is the worst hitter in baseball.
If he were the best defensive first baseman in history there would be no reason to carry him.

rangers have lost the lead with two outs in the 9th.

In other words, the bad news is as a ballplayer he's no Keith Hernandez.
On the other hand, the good news is as a human being he's no Keith Hernandez.
I can only assume they're keeping him, at this point, because he's a popular teammate and it's almost September.
-

I would much rather see the Yankees win that division. The Jays scare the shit out of me.

Everybody has their own opinion. That's fine; different strokes for different folks, and all that. It's possible to recognize that he's an Astro and hope that he does well (which I do) while still being concerned that his behavior is unnecessarily antagonistic and may set a bad example for the many young guys who will be coming up over the next few years (which does concern me). What I don't understand is why the discussion has become so mean-spirited. If I contributed to that, I apologize.
-

I think they realize that if Springer returns to form it will only take one or two other guys getting hot and they will win a lot of games and a lot of series. For some reason they seem to think that Carter is more likely to get hot than a guy who's abusing AAA is to stay hot. They know a lot more about these guys than you or I do so if they want to have Carter in the lineup that's their business. But when his oafishness risks getting someone like Correa hurt that's when it's no longer cute.
-

Me too. I think the Jays will pull away, and that's not a good thing.

It's the players on the field, Jim. Pitchers don't like being treated like they're simply out there to throw batting practice. Dallas Keuchel yelled at Delino Deshields to "sit down" right from the mound for Deshields's behavior. Right or wrong, that's the reaction you're going to get when you're that demonstrative on the field.

Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges.
Why?
-
Why?
A rookie was rung up and stood there like he's Mike Trout in disbelief at a bad strike call. A veteran hits a lazy fly ball, gets pissed at himself, runs the bases anyway as the fly ball is caught.
I think it's quite clear DeShields was showing up Keuchel and the ump. Gomez wasn't. He didn't stare down the ump or pitcher as if to say throw a better pitch. IMO this was a carry over of Gomez's and McCann's feud.

What Gomez was saying was "this was all on me, the pitcher didn't have anything to do with it". Pitchers don't like that. And who made Keuchel guardian of the game?

Or possibly just the Yankees being a bunch of whiny bitches.
The fact that all of the national pundits were dogging on Girariadiria and his merry bunch of dickbags on the radio next day should be all you need to know.

Did he? Or was he saying he couldn't believe he swung at a pitch he couldn't hit. Either way he ran down the first base line and did not look at the bench or pitcher. The bench was running its collective mouth while its team was down 9 runs.
I have no problem with pitchers being the guardians of the games they are pitching.
-
Did he? Or was he saying he couldn't believe he swung at a pitch he couldn't hit. Ei
He was saying "I can't believe I didn't crush that pitch". I think that's beyond obvious. And you keep ignoring the flip of the bat towards the Yankee dugout in disgust.
I have no problem with pitchers being the guardians of the games they are pitching.
So if Capuano had gotten into it with Gomez, you'd have no problem with it?
-
Valbuena flips the bat and watches nearly every ball he hits.
Damn right, Gomez was pissed because he did not hit the ball better than a popup. that shows up no one.
this "respect the game" stuff is bullshit. the Mighty Yankees were getting their brains beat in and were angry. there is that and the McCann v Gomez past.

The pitch was a breaking ball under his knees on the inside corner. I don't know that his being pissed that he swung at all or thought he missed a meatball is obvious. If he hadn't swung I don't know that it would have been called a strike.
Had Gomez stared at the point of contact in disbelief or at the pitcher then I'd have no problem with it. If DeShields had barked while walking to the dugout without hesitation I'd think Keuchel was out of line for yelling at him.
HH, I have no problem with your general stance on Gomez, but sometimes assholes don't act like assholes. I don't think he acted like an asshole.

I think that kind of behavior is acting like an asshole, regardless if the other team gets upset at it. I realize some people like the bat flipping, sky pointing, home run admiring pirouetting in the box, chest thumping, angry hat adjusting, etc you see so much of today because they think it shows "passion". I think it's acting like an asshole and I'm a "act like you've been there" kind of guy when it comes to professionals' on-field behavior. I get that most people here feel differently.

I do NOT feel differently, as anyone who ever played for me will tell you. I never said I condone bat flipping or slamming helmets or throwing stuff. I said Gomez was pissed at himself and not showing anyone up. McCann started that shit, and once more, this "respect the game" piety is bullshit.

Would it have killed Gomez to not acknowledge the yipping from the Yankee dugout? Did he have to respond? Did he not tell them to shut up? I don't know, maybe he's got some uncontrollable neurological disorder and can't help himself. I'm sure he didn't give it much thought.

oh, hey. he's a dick, right? that is what they do.
Keuchel has that same neurological disorder?

Many on this board can't turn the other cheek, yet, many on this board expected Gomez to do so.

So he was just emulating the dick Yankees. Well, okay then. Alright. That's a thing.
-
I for one like Gomez and what he brings to the table. He may act like an asshole and actually be an asshole (which I seriously doubt), but he's our asshole. And why shouldn't pitchers be the guardian (and enforcer) of the game while out on the mound? That's not a license to act sanctimonious. It is about reminding the other club to respect the game. DeShields was being a prick, possibly due to his past with the club, and Keuchel simply told him to grab some pine, meat. I've got no problem with that.

Some of us like Gomez and the excitement he plays with. some of us like him but don't like some of the things he does. Some of us don't like him and hate the way he acts. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong. It's all a matter of opinion and no matter how much arguing and bickering goes on here, opinions probably won't change. I think it's time that we as a group agree to disagree on whether he's an ass or simply someone who plays with emotion. This shit is getting us nowhere and only creating tension. It's time to move on.

Nobody is right, nobody is wrong.
You're probably fine except for this. Nobody here will ever agree with this.
-
And you keep ignoring the flip of the bat towards the Yankee dugout in disgust.
This is a pretty big reach. Obviously the bat would end up on the first base side because he was headed to first, which happens to be the home team dugout in Yankee stadium. To act like he was throwing the bat at the Yankees in the dugout is silly. If it happened at MMPUS he would be flipping the bat towards his own dugout in disgust.
I'd much rather hear your interpretation of him tapping his helmet when he stepped on second and third when he homered in the next at bat.

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with this site's manifesto...it's a place for Astros fans to come and fight like hell.

No it's not! You take that back!

I didn't see it. I know he homered, but didn't see his trip around the bases.

Oh I think a good fight, just tire of this one

Actually, he was on pretty good behavior. He circled the bags quickly and didn't really admire the shot, which was gargantuan to dead CF.

Tapping your helmet as you step on each bag isn't exactly putting your head down and hustling around bases. It's doubly insulting because he was making a big show of the fact that he was wearing a helmet, whereas the Yankees because they were on the field were not wearing helmets.* So he was basically just rubbing his home-run hitting helmet in all of their faces. Highly unprofessional.
* I note that this would not have been true in 2004, but back then it would have been obvious that Gomez was mocking Olerud.

I can't tell if you're serious or not about this.

CG: I do this (taps head) when I'm a little kid when I started hitting home runs. Everyone has their home run style so that's what I do, you know? Every base, touch it, drop my helmet, like remind me. (Edwin) Encarnacio have the "wing," Dimitri Young have the "wing," too – everybody have a different style. To run the bases, I like to run 'em fast and tap my helmet.

Who? - Rickey Henderson

You were so pissed you turned the TV off.
-
I do not give a fuck what you folks think of Gomez' "reputation." He is on the Astros now, and his team obviously accepts him. Maybe some of you hardasses should too.
Wouldn't be the first time. I once went 3 years without calling Roger Clemens a raging jackass.
-

Actually, I was on a conference call. I'd done 4 1/2 innings of PBP beforehand and had to follow the last few looking around the corner and on the MLB app.

Great example. Me too.

What Gomez was saying was "this was all on me, the pitcher didn't have anything to do with it". Pitchers don't like that. And who made Keuchel guardian of the game?
Doesn't Gattis essentially do this every time he misses a pitch? He gets fairly animated. I would assume it's the same thought process ("It's all on me, had nothing to do with the pitcher").

I was not being serious, but thank you for that story. I did not know that.
