I tell you, they're messing with you.
-
When was conger last in the lineup?
-
When was conger last in the lineup?
Every time he plays?
-
Hey, send us some of that rain!
-
Every time he plays?
No. To get to the other side.
-
The combined age of Rollins and Utley makes me feel young.
-
When the hell did the Doyers get Chase Utley?
-
Yesterday.
-
Justin Turner is having a hell of a season.
-
Clapton delivers.
-
When the hell did the Doyers get Chase Utley?
They're at something like $298.5MM payroll now. Almost makes you pine for the days of Steinbrenner.

They're lineup is looking like some kind of weird video game lineup from 2008.
-
I'm watching the game on mlb channel, and it's the Astros feed. I'm already sick of Ashby.

I rely on illegal streams and rarely are they the Astros feed...I wonder why?
-
That was promising, until the dp and ground out.
-
Ethier - BB
Grandal - K looking
Crawford - Grounds to 2nd, Ethier out on force, Crawford safe at 1st
Hernandez - Flies out to 1B foul territory
Middle of the 2nd. No Score.
-
That was promising, until the dp and ground out.
They're in their rhythm now.
-
I'm sorry, on this team I love Carter, Marisnick, and Castro.
-
Marisnck with 2-run HR. Astros 2-0, 2 outs.
-
Carter and Marisnick get a hit. I could learn to enjoy this.
-
Gattis - Deep fly out to LF
Rasmus - K looking
Carter - Liner single to LF
Marisnick - HR to LF
Castro - Double to LF
Altuve - Grounds out to 2B
End of the 2nd. Astros 2-0.
-
I'm sorry, on this team I love Carter, Marisnick, and Castro.
I'm not as in love with the other two (although I don't hate them), but Marisnick is one of my favorites, too. Every team needs the unheralded guys who nonetheless make important contributions, and he's definitely one of those.
-
Carter and Marisnick get a hit. I could learn to enjoy this.
Castro, too. Gattis's fly out was hit really hard as well. Good to see a pitcher who isn't Archer I guess.
-
Castro, too. Gattis's fly out was hit really hard as well. Good to see a pitcher who isn't Archer I guess.
No shit. I'd love to see one of the next two games go really well.
-
Good grief, the offense finally puts up two runs, so let's walk the lead-off guy in the next inning.
-
Carter and Marisnick get a hit. I could learn to enjoy this.
After you get over the shock?
-
Uh oh, I agree with Ashby.
-
Good grief, the offense finally puts up two runs, so let's walk the lead-off guy in the next inning.
I wish I wasn't lagging so far behind this conversation, but yeah...
-
Pederson - BB
Rollins - Flies out to 2B
Utley - Grounds in to FC
Turner - Lines out to 2B
Middle of the 3rd. Astros 2-0.
-
Uh oh, I agree with Ashby.
Law of averages or blind squirrel? He has to get it right occasionally, there must be some explanation.
-
Gomez - K swinging
Correa - K swinging
Lowrie - Grounds out to 3rd
End of the 3rd. Astros 2-0.
-
Law of averages or blind squirrel? He has to get it right occasionally, there must be some explanation.
I think he is good at the techncal part of the game and I like his connection to Astro history. Besides that he has many faults.
-
Is the poster 'Houston' named Melvin Edwards? They just showed a tweet by him.
-

Yes.
-
Is the poster 'Houston' named Melvin Edwards? They just showed a tweet by him.
That's our guy!
-
Gonzalez - K looking
Ethier - Grounds out to 2nd
Grandal - 1U
Middle of the 4th. Astros 2-0.
-
These back-of-the-rotation guys have been nails recently (all year, really).
-
Fiers has some strong breaking stuff.
-
Gattis - Grounds out to SS
Rasmus - 3U
Carter - Grounds out to SS
End of the 4th. Astros 2-0.
-
Fiers has the same release point on all his pitches with the over-the-top delivery. I think it makes it harder for hitters to pick up what kind of pitch he is throwing. But he's a bit up a nibbler too.
-
I think he is good at the techncal part of the game and I like his connection to Astro history. Besides that he has many faults.
I had a number of years listening to Astros radio back in the days when we had dial up modems with long lags and incoming phone calls would bump the feed. I actually liked Ashby on radio but when you can see what is going on you realise what he says doesn't always line up with what you see. Not sure but I think he inserts a lot more of personal opinions these days and perhaps tries to come across a lot more intellectual than he used to.
-
I wonder if Lasorda has any kind of conversation that isn't animated.
-
Crawford - Flies out to 3B foul territory
Hernandez - Flies out to 2B
Pederson - K swinging
Middle of the 5th. Astros 2-0.
-
I walked back into the room and thought they were replaying Marisnick's first AB.
-
Nice steal of 3B, too.
-
Marisnick has to score on that fly ball.
-
If there's a pitch in the left handers batter's box, Altuve is gonna hack at it.
-
Well that fizzled quickly.
-
That's fucking pathetic. Three tries with a man on base, and none of these fuckers can come through.
-
Marisnick - Double to LCF
Castro - (Marisnick steals 3rd) Flies out to RF, Marisnick stays
Altuve - K swinging
Gomez - Foul tip strike out
End of the 5th. Astros 2-0.
-
That's fucking pathetic. Three tries with a man on base, and none of these fuckers can come through.
Castro came through.
-
That was pretty lonely guy on third for three outs.
-
I never realized Fiers has the bender he's got. That is nasty.
-
I never realized Fiers has the bender he's got. That is nasty.
I like Fiers. I think he's a valuable guy. I think you could do a lot worse than five starters like Keuchel, McHugh, McCullers, Feldman, and Fiers.
-
That was pretty lonely guy on third for three outs.
Altuve really pisses me off sometimes. He appears to have no idea about situational hitting.
-
You prefer Feldman over Kazmir? Or making an assumption based on current contract status?

Rollins - K
Utley - Grounds out to 2B
Turner - Grounds out to 3B
Middle of the 6th. Astros 2-0.
-

I knew I was forgetting somebody. I'm a dumbass. But it strengthens my point nonetheless.
-
Bad challenge there. Jed is clearly out.
-
Bad challenge there. Jed is clearly out.
Yeah, Hinch is usually more objective than that. I think he got some bad advice.
-
I knew I was forgetting somebody. I'm a dumbass. But it strengthens my point nonetheless.
. Mine was a legit question, given Feldman's recent performance and Kazmir's interesting backstory. I agree we have a very solid (and I think broadly under appreciated) staff.
-
Went downstairs to get some ice and almost missed the top of the 6th.
-
Gattis!!
-
He knocked the shit out of that.
-
Gattis with a 2 out solo HR. Astros 3-0.
-
Correa - Grounds out 1-3
Lowrie - Grounds out to SS
Gattis - HR to LF
Rasmus - Grounds out to SS
End of the 6th. Astros 3-0.
-
He clubbed that rawhide.
-
The strike zone is fixin' to get pretty large.
-
Why are Brownie and Ashby ripping open all of these old wounds?
-
Invoking Joe Niekro vs, Dodgers giving the Astros power here.
-
Fiers isn't exactly a quick worker.
-
Fiers isn't exactly a quick worker.
Feldman-like. But can't complain.
-
Gonzalez - Grounds out to 2B
Ethier - K
Grandal - K swinging
Middle of the 7th. Astros 3-0.
-
Nobody better fucking move from where they are the next two innings.
-
Hatcher in to pitch for Dodgers.
-
Is that a sinker he is throwing for strike 3 on Carter and Marisnick?
-
Agent Martinez just struck out for the 2nd out with Cabrera on 2nd against the Rangers in the bottom of the 9th, Rangers leading 2-0. Detroit down to their last out.
-
Carter - K looking
Marisnick - K swinging
Castro - Flies out to CF
End of the 7th. Astros 3-0.
-
Stupid Rangers just won.
-
Is that a sinker he is throwing for strike 3 on Carter and Marisnick?
Sinker, splitter, fork ball...
-
Wow, what a curve.
-
Fiers is getting tired...curveball down, fastball up...
-
Fiers is getting tired...curveball down, fastball up...
Yup. I'd be worried about a 9th inning. Of course, Ashby isn't.
-
Great fastball for strike three there.
-
Yup. I'd be worried about a 9th inning. Of course, Ashby isn't.
Those last few pitches to Pederson looked good. But he's running on adrenaline right not. I think you gotta give him a shot in the 9th.
-
Lets have a long bottom half of the inning so he can rest and get some more runs.
-
Crawford - K swinging
Hernandez - K looking
Pederson - K looking
Middle of the 8th. Astros 3-0.
-
This is going to be a tough decision for Hinch. I suspect that he lets Fiers go back out, but tells him that he's gone as soon as anybody reaches base.
-
That's as excited as I've heard Brownie call a strikeout.
-
Finished that inning strong.
-
Garcia in to pitch for Dodgers.
-
I hope Guiness/Pete doesn't decide to show up post after a year and a half.
-
Where the fuck is spack?
-
Have a feeling Spack is watching with us this evening.
-
Yeah, I just deleted something I was going to post. I hope that Spack has mercy on my soul.
ETA: And my spleen.
-
Altuve - Lines out to CF
Gomez - Grounds out to 3B
Correa - K swinging
End of the 8th. Astros 3-0.
-
It breaks my heart to see those Kile curveballs.
-
This I ain't seen much of
-
It breaks my heart to see those Kile curveballs.
I'll drink to that guy.
-
That's why we have the Jakester out there.
-
My feed is a couple of minutes behind, so I can't look here anymore for a while. Yeah Jake.
-
Rollins flies out to LCF.
-
Utley flies out to RF.
-
126 pitches with 2 outs.
-
Man, Turner is very fuzzy, isn't he?
-
Setting him up for the change up
-
Yeah baby!!! no hitter!
-
Holy shit. So great.
-
Drink it in.
-
Who says that deal sucked...
-
Oh man, that's fantastic!!!!!! I'm really happy for him!
-
Turner K swinging
Final. Astros 3-0.
No hitter for Fiers!
-
He finished the shit out of that no-hitter.
-
You could have squeezed diamonds out of me for the last two innings.
-
First time I have seen every pitch in a no hitter, that was pretty sweet.
-
Who says that deal sucked...
I think Gomez will be good, too, but Fiers is the man tonight.
-
First time I've ever followed GZ during a game. I may have to come back if it's gonna be like this.
-
$11MM/out, in case you're wondering.
-
mlb.com had a red no hitter label on the scoreboard panel on the left to alert people what was going on. Still there now. But they had it up at least at the beginning of the 9th
-
The clever wit? Or the pbp?

Friggin' AWESOME!!!

Fiers can't complete a sentence in this interview.
-
out FREAKIN standing! What a performance by Mr Fiers. Glad to have been able to see it if a few minutes behind the GZ. Had to stop reading for the past couple innings...
-
I had my suspicions about a no-hitter this series, but that wasn't how I expected it to work out.
NOT that I'm complaining...
/still shaking
-
Last one for Astros was the six pitcher effort in 2003?
-
Luhnow looks like a genius tonight.
-
Fiers can't complete a sentence in this interview.
I really liked the post game interview, he seems like a great guy.
-
And Aaron Fucking Boone with the buzzkill on Twitter:
"Fiers just fired his glove a la Jesse Orosco in the '86 NLCS. Congrats on the no no!"
FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Yup. Last single-pitcher was Kile in 93.
-
Yup. Last single-pitcher was Kile in 93.
Doing the arithmetic on that makes me feel very, very old.

Yup. Last single-pitcher was Kile in 93.
wow. Growing up with this team in the 80's, they didn't seem all that rare. Hard to believe it had been that long.
-
Doing the arithmetic on that makes me feel very, very old.
I was 37 in '93. Except for the additional aches and pains, I still feel the same.
-
Doing the arithmetic on that makes me feel very, very old.
Yeah, and I listened to Scott's no-no on the radio back in '86.
-
wow. Growing up with this team in the 80's, they didn't seem all that rare. Hard to believe it had been that long.
There were two in the 80s. It was still pretty rare.

The 6 pitcher effort count towards the teams 11 doesn't it?

Maybe Johnson was before Nottebart and Dierker before Forsch. Too lazy to look it up.

Luhnow looks like a genius tonight.
The team's in first place. He looked like a genius all season my friend.
-
Toronto is up 3 - 0 against the LAA with the Halos about to bat in the bottom of the third.
-
I don't like the way that's narrowing toward the bottom.
We need Asher Wojciechowski to get one to balance that out.

I'd be happy adding a six letter last name. One that ends with an R.

Dodgers have a serious line-up and they are going to be pissed. Couple of great games ahead.

That's not how cakes work, Donnie. And go cut those sideburns.

Donnie Baseball fundamentally misunderstands cake.

Last time Astros no-hit the Dodgers, the Dodgers went on to win the World Series that year.

Nothing, it allows me to eat icing.

Juego sin hit!!!

I'm watching the last three innings of the Dodgers broadcast with Charlie Steiner and Orel Hirchjihseor. Tomorrow morning I'll listen to Vin's call of the last couple of innings, then Ford and Sparks.
-
I'm happy you got to see an Astro throw one for your first.
You don't get that many really memorable games and I only get to see two a week so I feel lucky. Especially seeing there were consecutive walk off wins in extra innings this week.
-
That's as excited as I've heard Brownie call a strikeout.
That was the end of the eighth? I thought at the time he was trying to choke it down but there was probably some fist pumping.

Guys
That was awesome

Also, what a fucking season this has been. Unforgettable.

Neil T heard music during the Astros game. (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/?p=12838)

Great recap.
I could only get the radio feed to stream here, so listened during the game. I'm watching the video clip of Fiers in the post game interview. Fantastic. I'm really happy for him.
-
That was absolutely fantastic. Both the recap and the game.
And to HH's point about not doing anything different the last two innings, in our house it went from telling the older kid "get ready for bed" to "just keep doing whatever it is you were doing. This is 'free time.' No explanations, just keep doing it."
-

Kris was watching some damn movie in the kitchen. I was watching the game in my study. In the 8th I made her bring me a bottle of wine. Then I told her to stop asking questions.

I was hanging out with friends tonight. Few hours ago looked and saw I'd missed a couple text messages: "You watching?" from my dad and "!!" from Spiers for Hall of Fame. So after everybody left I tucked my wife in and turned on the game.
Mostly I am thinking about Castro the Astro, who has been on this absurd train ride longer than any of them; who went from purposeless summers catching meaningless games in an empty stadium to 30,000 Astros fans on their feet for a no hitter during a pennant race in late August.
Regardless of how this season ends up, they and we and Castro have exorcised some fucking demons.

Excellent point. I will be disappointed if the Astros falter because of all they've accomplished this year. But I'm also immensely proud of them because of what they've accomplished, and that will not change. I love this team.

Except when they drive me nuts.
Last night I re-watched the first three innings before going to bed. I got up this morning and re-watched every video clip, read every article, re-read the GameZone.
The rest of the season is going to be fun.

I expect plenty of both in the coming weeks.

Did anyone listen to the Astro radio broadcast last night? I did not but they were using some audio from Ford as voiceover for ESPN clips this morning. After the K that ended the 8th he said something about it being a no-hitter through 8.

I only listened to the 9th and he said no hitter through 8. Then he would say, 2 outs away, 1 more out to go, 1 strike away from a no hitter.
-
I missed the entire game because I was flying out to visit the in-laws (ironically, to Los Angeles). Took out the phone when we landed, opened up MLB atbat, and thought "something looks odd about that box score..." I can't remember the last time I didn't get to at least check the score once or twice during an Astros game.
I did manage to witness the previous one in person, though.

Obviously what we do and say in the stands and in here means absolutely nothing. Still, you respect the tradition. I can understand, however, an announcer wanting to make it known what was going on. They do not want someone to tune in and say, "eh, games almost over" and tune away without knowing what was happening.
-
Gene Elston did not believe in the tradition/superstition. I do. Like Knox's dad, I texted Mark "Are you watching?"

I often read the GZ after the game, it is still fun even if you know the score. GZ has been a good read this last week with walk offs and all. Mind you, you need to be careful where and when you read, if you LOL on the bus or in air port lounges you get some pretty funny looks for the people around you.

Don't blame the GZ for those funny looks.

I listened to the whole thing. He first said "no hitter" at the end of the 7th, I think. Sparks seemed to be at a bit of a loss to know how to reply.
-

I didn't say they were all GZ related.

Ashby was unusually subdued the last two innings. He's been through more than most.
