The Astros start the second half of their season with the best record in the American League and Alex Presley in center field.
-
I guess in MLB the rover goes in right field.
-
Astros down 2-0 in the middle of the third
-
I'm getting the vibe from the TV crew that Springer isn't playing.
-
i wish tat goofy bastard with the Astros cap would get tired of being on camera.
-
I forgot that Singleton runs deceptively well.
-
Singles by Valbuena and Gattis and an RBI groundout by Singleton make it 2-1. Double off the wall by Castro plates Singleton, and now a single by Presley plates Castro.
Astros take a 3-2 lead!
-
Tie game, baby! Whoops, now 3-2 lead!
-
Masterson is a huge guy.
-
Tucker with a double off the Monster...Presley scores, Altuve scores, and the Astros now with a 5-2 lead
-
Masterson is a huge guy.
6'6" 260lbs. from Kingston, Jamaica.
-
6'6" 260lbs. from Kingston, Jamaica.
And after the Correa single/error, that's it for Masterson. Five runs, all earned in 3.2, with two runners on.
-
Hit or Error? I say error. Blum says hit.
-
List of things Ash hates:
Barehanded plays.

Ruled a hit, but I think I'd lean towards error too.
-
Valbuena with a walk to load the bases for Gattis, the 11th hitter this inning.
-
Gattis with a bouncer up the middle, but fielded behind the bag for a FC.
But the Astros string some hits together...score 5 runs to take a 5-2 lead.
-
List of things Ash hates:
Barehanded plays.
Baseball games that last more than two hours.
Possibly, baseball.
Pitcher moves to second without making a throw.

He'd better include tomato hornworms. Everything was fine in the garden last time Iooked, either yesterday morning or maybe Wednesday. Then I looked out the window this afternoon, and the Chinese pepper plants were down to one leaf between the two of them, and the poblano plant was down to about half of its leaves. I went out there, and there was a 5" long tomato hornworm chowing down on the Chinese peppers (literally, it was apparently also eating the peppers). It's my own damn fault, because last year a similar thing happened with all of my thyme plants, so I should have been more vigilant. But nature still pisses me off sometimes.
-
Fuck. That was a lame hit.
-
5-3 now, with two on and one out. Sox getting some good swings on Straily.
-
Grounder to 3B, turn at 2B, and throw nails Ortiz in the head, run scores to make it 5-4.
That's it for Straily.
-

How many teams does that happen to over the course of a season?
-
Sandoval with an RBI single, and we're tied back up at 5.
-
How many teams does that happen to over the course of a season?
Happens every once in a while. Not sure they'd have gotten two anyway.
-
T6:
Single by Presley
Single by Altuve
Tucker strikes out
Correa strikes out
Valbuena strikes out
Ugh.
-
With leadoff batters on first and second, why wouldn't you try to bunt them over? Too early?
-
With leadoff batters on first and second, why wouldn't you try to bunt them over? Too early?
I would have. But it's the American League...nobody bunts.
-
Nice stroke for Gattis, lead off double.
-
OMG, I was driving home an hour or so ago and head the Red Sox announcers say they were going to trade for Sonny Gray. Inhalant abuse is a terrible thing.
-
Come on, Presley.
-
Detroit's Sanchez took a no hitter and an 8 to 0 lead in to the top of the eighth inning. It's now 8-6.
-
T7:
Gattis with a leadoff double
Singleton pops out to SS
Carter singles to RF on a blooper...Gattis has to hold, so only gets to 3B. Runners at the corner, one out
Castro...works the count to 3-0...draws a walk to load the bases with one out
Presley...battling, fouling off some touch pitches...and finally strikes out
Altuve...a lifetime .180 hitter with the bases loaded...singles to CF, just out of reach of the SS...Gattis scores, Carter scores! Astros take a 7-5 lead!
-
Altuve! Altuve! Altuve!
-
Altuve with another three hit night.
-
Tucker swings at a lot of really bad pitches.
-
Tucker swings at a lot of really bad pitches.
Unlike any other Astro.
-
Fields in to pitch the 7th. Let's hope he doesn't become eligible for the win.
-
Unlike any other Astro.
Actually, the only other hitter that swings at as many balls is probably Gattis. The difference is, Gattis can hit them. Everyone else just swing and miss at everything. I think being a little more disciplined would really help Tucker.
-
I was actually thinking of Altuve, who is a great bad ball hitter.
-

And that's one of the things that I found most impressive about Tucker when he came up: he seemed to be willing to let balls go if they were out of his hitting zone. But lately he seems to be a lot more anxious.
-
And Fields promptly gives up a single and a walk
-
Fields is making a mess.
-
I can't stand David Ortiz.
-
And another walk loads the bases with nobody out.
-
And that's it for Fields. He's been awful his last two outings. Thatcher in. Living on the edge.
-
This is officially a mess.
-
And Thatcher promptly serves up an RBI single, it's now 7-6, bases still loaded and still nobody out.
And Thatcher is out, Harris in to try to clean up Fields and Thatcher's steaming pile of poo.
-
And that's one of the things that I found most impressive about Tucker when he came up: he seemed to be willing to let balls go if they were out of his hitting zone. But lately he seems to be a lot more anxious.
The 180-degree change is certainly intriguing.
-
Harris gets a punchout for the first out of the inning.
-
This is fascinatingly compelling.
-
DeAza with a grounder up the middle, but with the shift on, no possibility of the double play, Correa can only run to the bag himself. Run scores to tie it up, but now two outs.
-
This is fascinatingly compelling.
It's bordering on intriguing.
-
Ground ball ends the inning, but the Sox get a pair to tie it back up. Astros just can't stand having a lead.
-
It's thought provoking how enthralling and yet still beguiling the nature of FIELDS past two outings.
-
And after all that shit, and Harris coming in to work a fucking miracle...he's the one who gets the blown save.
-
Anybody know how many outs there are?
-
Correa!!!
-
Correa dinger!!
Astros grab the lead back 8-7
-
Gripping.
-
Santana entered the game for defensive purposes. It's officially a train wreck in the outfield.
-
Santana entered the game for defensive purposes. It's officially a train wreck in the outfield.
It's like a Sesame Street episode: which of these things is not like the others?
-
Neshek in for the 8th.
-
I don't think Santana is as horrible as he seems. He's not good out there but I think he's not as bad as he seems.
-
I think it's sad that there are more than one person inn the world named "Mookie".
-
Correa now with an error to lead off the 8th.
-
Man, this is some spellbinding shit going on here.
-
Correa now with an error to lead off the 8th.
Rookies
-
Neshek isn't exactly "cat like" off the mound.
-
And Betts is gunned down trying to take 3B. Nice throw by Castro.
-
Damnit, stop walking guys.
-
Followed by a walk. Ortiz up. This is a real nail-biter.
-
Followed by a walk. Ortiz up. This is a real nail-biter.
Nail biter? That's intriguing.
-
Goddammit.
-
Fuck, can't they get a regular bounce off the wall.
-
Ortiz doubles off the wall, Bogarts scores...another blown save.
-
It's not like we're playing the '27 Yankees. These guys suck.
-
Insidious bastards.
-
I am goddamn riveted to this fucking shit.
-
Well, two blown saves so far, and another blown lead that would qualify as a blown save, except that the starter couldn't qualify for the win. Can't blame this one on the offense. The bullpen has just shit the bed.
-
The bullpen has just shit the bed.
First they crapped their drawers, then they shit the bed.
-
Shift takes away a hit for Carter, after it fucked the Astros in the 7th. Karma hates the Astros.
-
Karma, you hot little bitch.
-
This game is totally engrossing.
-
It's going to be a beguiling finish.
-
Hernandez in, and he's got to go for as long at it takes to get another lead. Only Gregerson left.
-
This is already nearly a four hour game.
-
Nothing specific, but I wish Ashby would just shut the fuck up. Four hours of all his stupid questions and observations is much too long.
-
This is already nearly a four hour game.
Intriguing.
-
This is already nearly a four hour game.
But it's captivating.
-
And apparently four hours isn't enough. Extra baseball.
-
Motherfucker.
-
leading off the 10th, Altuve drilled in the elbow.
-
Altuve's gotta take a bag here.
-
hell yeah Carlos, and Tucker. Get some more
-
For some reason I had always thought Napoli was a good player.
-
Tucker hits a liner right between the first baseman's legs. Ball kicks off the wall perfectly to the RFer, and Altuve has to hold at 2B. And now Correa with a single to LF, Altuve scores to give the Astros a 9-8 lead!
-
For some reason I had always thought Napoli was a good player.
Isn't it puzzling how shitty he is this year.
-
Valbuena flies out, and Santana with an infield single to load the bases and one out for Singleton.
-
Singleton green lighted on 3-0?
-
Singleton works the count to 3-0...fouls off three consecutive meatballs...and finally singles to RF...Tucker scores, Correa scores, Santana to 3B...Astros now lead 11-8
-
Finally, he squared one up.
-
Singleton green lighted on 3-0?
With the bases loaded and a lead in the 10th on the road? He'd better be getting the fucking green light.
-
Man, they are one shitty defensive team.
-
Carter down on strikes
Double steal...Singleton takes 2B as Santana steals home.
12-8 Astros.
-
Castro flies out to end the inning, but the Astros take a 4-run lead to the bottom of the 10th.
I assume Hernandez will stay on.
-
I guess not. Gregerson in. Not a save situation.
-
I guess not. Gregerson in. Not a save situation.
He likely got fully warmed up during that. Might as well use him
-
Absorbing.
-
<Spock eyebrow> Fascinating </Spock eyebrow>
-
He likely got fully warmed up during that. Might as well use him
Well, except if this inning goes to shit, you've got no one left.
-
And we're coming up on the 5 hour mark.
-
Stimulating.
-
Great win. Lots of contributors.
-
1-2-3 for Gregerson...and FINALLY!
Astros take the series opener 12-8.
-
Great win. Lots of contributors.
The inclusive behavior of the aggregate exudes teamwork.
-
What a game!
-
What a game!
Agreed. Baseball is cool.
