Title: GCL Astros 2015
Post by: Nate Colbert on June 21, 2015, 01:33:18 pm
A roster is up at milb.com (http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=milb&cid=1998). Notable assignees from this year's draft include Kyle Tucker and 6th-rounder Nestor Muriel. WTHB has a further breakdown of the roster here (http://whattheheckbobby.blogspot.com/2015/06/meet-gcl-astros.html).

Season starts tomorrow afternoon.

Interesting factoid--there are four Aussies are on the roster:  RHP Lachlan Madden,  C Jake Bowey, 1B Connor MacDonald and INF Jared Cruz. The first three were all originally signed by the Astros and played last year in the DSL. There was a bit of a discussion about a couple of 'em in last year's DSL thread (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=116908.0).

The age thing was widely reported at the time of the draft in regards to Nestor Muriel. Still, it's kind of eye-opening to look at this GCL team and see that the next-youngest player on the roster (Jonathan Matute) is actually 14 months older than Muriel.

Dropped first game this afternoon by a 4-0 score. Just 1 hit. Kyle Tucker in the #2 spot (and playing RF) went 0-3 with a walk. Nestor Muriel out of the bottom of the batting order (and playing CF) went 0-2 with a walk.

Kyle Tucker picks ups his first professional hit and drew a walk as the Astros offense again stuck in the mud, scoring just a run on seven singles in the loss.

Man, the offense really continues to struggle. Just 20 hits thru the first 5 games (all losses), 18 of which have been singles. Of the 2 XBH, both have been doubles including one today from Kyle Tucker. He's 3-17 with 3 walks vs 2 strikeouts.

Eshelman signs and will go to the GCL.  He will pitch very little as he has already racked up more than 130 innings pitched this year.

Daz Cameron makes his first appearance. Batting leadoff, he goes 2-4 with an RBI and swipes a couple of bases (though he is thrown out once).

The baby stros win just their 2nd game.

19-year old DR righty Hector Perez, who ranked 8th in the DSL with a 0.88 WHIP and had racked up a 32/6 K to W in 29.2 IP, makes his stateside debut.

Kyle Tucker with his 2nd dinger in today's game. Daz Cameron swiped a couple of bases yesterday and already has 6 SBs (in 8 attempts) and leads the club in that regard even though he's played just 10 games.

Although nothing ever showed up on the transactions page, Dylan James was activated out of EST and pitched a scoreless inning today in his pro debut. Signed out of a tryout camp over the winter after pitching at West Texas A&M.
