I wonder how many times in MLB a 1B has been in the leadoff spot
-
popup that should have been caught, a walk and an E4 has the bases loaded and nobody out for the M's.
-

You forgot the pickoff attempt that Carter whiffed on.
-
Bases loaded walk ties it up. Still bases loaded and still no out...M's still haven't hit a ball out of the infield.
-
You forgot the pickoff attempt that Carter whiffed on.
Hi didn't whiff. He brought the glove down and Morrison had slid to the back side and rolled over to touch the bag.
-
B1:
Morrison pops up to 3B, but Valbuena runs in a circle and it drops right behind him for a single
Morrison picked off of 1B, but it will be challenged, as he was clearly safe by a mile...yep, call reversed...safe
Jackson walks, Morrison to 2B
Cano hits a chopper to 2B, Marwin can't handle it...E4, and bases loaded nobody out.
Hinch out to the mound
Cruz walks, Morrison scores to tie it at 1
Seager strikes out
Trumbo chops one to SS, Correa can only go to first, Jackson scores, Cano to 3B, Cruz to 2B
Smith strikes out
M's get 2 runs on a "single" that should have been a pop out
After 1...M's lead 2-1
-
Not a ball close to being squared up and two runs. Pretty shitty defense.
-

And there is no defense for a walk.
-
That was a tough play for Valbuena with where he was positioned. Should have been caught. Of course that is typically the SS ball.
-
T2:
Conger strikes out looking...that's three Kc's out of the four outs
Valbuena strikes out
Marwin grounds back to the box
2-1 Hags
-
That was a tough play for Valbuena with where he was positioned. Should have been caught. Of course that is typically the SS ball.
The shift has been killing them lately
-
B2:
They still wear plaid in Seattle. Sad.
Miller pops out F2
Zunino strikes out, ball gets away from Conger, but he runs it down and completes the putout 2-3
Morrison, who was either taking a shit or forgot he was playing when it came his time to bat...finally gets in the box and strikes out looking
We've played two...2-1
-
T3:
Springer pops out F3
Correa pops out F4
Tucker strikes out
-
Valbuena not having a good game at 3B
-
McCullers really overthrowing
-
B3:
Jackson grounds out 1-3 on a nice grab by McCullers
Cano grounds to 2B, Marwin dives and knocks it down, but can't corral it...infield single
Cruz singles to LF as Valbuena just gives up on it, Cano to 2B
Seager strikes out
Trumbo with a single past Valbuena, Cano scores
Smith loops one to 3B, fine leaping grap by Valbuena
Mariners yet to hit one solid, but three little weak seeing eye grounders plate another run
3-1 Mariners
-
T4:
Gattis grounds up the middle, but with the shift, out 4-3
Carter strikes out swinging
Santana grounds out 6-3
Elias settling down nicely, retiring 10 in a row
3-1 M's

After 4...still 3-1
-
T5:
Conger grounds out 5-3
Valbuena strikes out swinging
Marwin with a rulebook double to RCF
Springer drilled right in the ass
Correa lines out to CF...
Astros leave another pair
-
McCullers looks like he just hurt his arm
-
And that's it for McCullers, he leaves trailing 4-1 with two runners on his responsibility
-
B5:
Jackson flies out F9 as Santana battles it
Cano singles to RF on the first ball that was well struck
Cruz walks on 4 pitches
Strom out to the mound, as McCullers seems to be hurting

Anybody else watching this?
-
Anybody else watching this?
Of course.
-
Just tuned in... via MLB.TV
-
T6:
Tucker strikes out swinging
Oh shit...Ashby is intrigued by McCullers
Gattis flies out F8
Carter strikes out swinging...that's 9 strikeouts through 6 innings
5-1 Mariners
-
Of course.
Well feel free to chime in here.
-
Anybody else watching this?
Yeah... Rough night so far. Defense has been subpar and M's findings holes
-
B6:
Roberto Hernandez in for the Astros
Miller walks on four pitches
Miller easily takes 2B as Conger bounces one down
Zunino strikes out
Morrison flies out F8, Miller tags and moves to 3B
Jackson grounds out 5-3 to end the inning
We've played six...5-1
-
T7:
Santana strikes out swinging
Conger flies out F7
Valbuena pops out F4
At the stretch...5-1
-
I'll chime in with the thought that Conger is an awful catcher. I don't give a shit how well he frames pitches, or even that his bat has been good lately. Having a catcher that no one respects and feels free to run at will on is unacceptable.
-
B7:
Cano doubles
Cruz singles up the middle, Cano to 3B...runners on the corners nobody out
Seager flies out to shallow LF, runners have to hold
Trumbo grounds into 5-4-3 double play, inning over
Nice job by Hernandez to come back and kill that inning
After 7...still 5-1
-
Rally time.
-

Conger has a noodle arm. With someone like Hernandez, there's no chance...runners just take bases whenever they want.
-
Rally time.
Oh, and fuck Arod.
-
There's one.
-
Marwin!!
Dinger, Donger, whatever...
-
Nice job Marwin. Hopefully, it sparks a larger rally.
-

Couldn't agree more. Castro should be the everyday catcher not the catcher against right handers
-
T8:
Blummer taking a shine to Nancy the ball girl
Marwin goes deep to CF to make it 5-2
That's all for Elias...Houstonian Mark Lowe takes the pill
Springer strikes out swinging
Correa grounds out 4-3
Tucker strikes out swinging
Astros get a run, cut the lead to 5-2
-

The problem is with the loss of Altuve and Marisnick, you're stuck with Valbuena and Tucker/Rasmus, so you can't really afford another automatic LF out.
-

I mean off the roster. Not being able to reach second base in the air is a deal breaker for a catcher, IMO. Luhnow has done a lot of great things, but seeking out a trade to get Conger is not one of them.
-
B8:
Smith grounds out 1-3
Miller flies out F8
Ashby doesn't know right from left
Zunino grounds out 5-3
We head to the 9th...Astros chasing three runs
-
Nice outing by Hernandez; he's given the club a chance.
-

Getting Conger was a mystery. You had a backup catcher who better both offensively and defensively.

Oh I'm in agreement here. One of few moves I seriously question. I never had much issue with corporon as the back up
-
T9:
Lots of Astros fans in Seattle
Gattis shatters his bat on a 6-3 groundout
Carter grounds out 5-3
Rasmus, pinch hitting for Santana, strikes out looking to end the game
Ugly game.
-
I feel like about 4 of the M's runs were more about luck and bad Astros defense rather than good hitting. Rough game for the good guys all the way around
-
I think the boys were just tired... Go get 'em tomorrow!
-

Well, the first two were unearned. The last three were bad luck. The M's hit one or two balls well all night.
-
McCullers looks like he just hurt his arm
I've looked around on astros.com to see if there is anything about this on there, but the articles just have the usual post-game quotes from McCullers and Hinch, and no mention that I saw of any issue. Hopefully it was nothing serious.

There was nothing said during the game or afterward. It was just my observation from his body language and subsequent pitches, none of which looked good or were close to being strikes. I thought he was really overthrowing last night, and that's not good.
-
I'm pretty sure his feelings were hurt.

I was watching the Seattle feed with ballpark sounds, and more than anything McCullers just looked pissed off. They showed first Hinch trying to cool him down in the dugout and then Strom. Hinch he seemed to listen to a little bit but to Strom he kind of had this belligerent teenager not-making-eye-contact-or-acknowledging-you-in-any-way thing going on. I didn't start watching until the 5th, and so hadn't seen all the defensive silliness of the first inning. But honestly for a while there I was a little worried about his mental state.

Classic "NeilT" recap! Just like him!

I think he was pissed at himself. He had great stuff but was terrible last night. No command whatsoever. I doubt he was pissed at teammates for misplays, but if he was, fuck him.

It wasn't silliness. A couple of plays didn't get made, and a couple of bad breaks. He put two of those guys on. Still, he came out of it only down 2-1. He had no reason to blow up at his teammates. If he did, then as Jim says, fuck him, and he needs to grow up.
