Title: May 24: Astros at Tigers
Post by: HudsonHawk on May 24, 2015, 12:45:51 pm
Astros plate 3 in their half of the first, but Hernandez was a disaster in the bottom half.

Walked three, forgot to cover 1B on what should have been the third out, then gave up a 3-run double.

Astros trail 5-3 after one.

I was watching the Cougars in the AAC championship game, but they started giving up runs and I thought since I hadn't seen any of the other tournament games I should watch the Astros.  Then the Astros started shitting the bed and now I don't know what to do.

Failure to cover first two days in a row. This one was a killer.

I'm flipping back and forth too. Neither look promising.

This is like the third time this season for Hernandez. I hope he likes the view.

they had runners in so many of the first inning and now nothing.  just all went away.  so much for hosting.

Probably wouldn't have hosted anyway, but winning today was their only shot.

Sanchez strikes out the side in the 5th, two of them called (lots of called third strikes this series)

Halfway...Astros down 6-3.

Through five innings the Astros have 17 strike outs, Carter with nine of them.

JD Martinez just struck out. I'm going to add that to the Astros' total.

You would think if Karter had that many strikes outs in five innings the Astros would be leading.

Gattis with a solo dinger to cut the lead to 7-4 in the 6th.

Tucker didn't go wildly out of his way to step on home plate. I think he happened to catch it with his heel but wouldn't swear to it.

I've seen plenty of one-handed swings from this team, but Rasmus swung at strike 2 there and somehow his bottom hand came off the bat. Not sure if I've seen that before.

Ok, they've got to figure out how to keep Tucker in the lineup. Do you sit Carter, and have Gattis or Tucker play 1B?

Marwin singles to RF...Tucker stops around third, but then starts again....good base running by Marwin to draw the throw...he's in a pickle, but the Tigers fuck it up, and Marwin is safe at 2B.

10-7 Astros.

There are a number of things going on that you won't see every day. Springer with a sacrifice bunt, a catcher covering second...

I thought for sure Marwin was going to leave the game with a dislocated shoulder.

Nobody else was covering the bag at 2B. Not sure where the SS or 2B were on that.

10-7 Astros.

One of them was chasing Marwin back towards first. The other one, well, you've got me there. Maybe the first baseman took the cutoff, the second baseman covered first, the shortstop ran Marwin back to first and the first baseman stayed where he was in the infield watching the play unfold with keen interest leaving second base open. You'd think the third baseman would be faster to second than the catcher but I guess not.

Went back and looked at the replay...the throw came all the way to the plate and the first baseman is the cutoff man for that,  The catcher threw to the SS covering 2B, who then threw back to Cabrera who'd gone back to 1B.  But Kinsler was no where to be found, I guess he was getting a hot dog.  Thirdbaseman sat there with his thumb up his butt.

Now I'm going to have to go back and look at it to try to figure out where the hell Kinsler was.

Now I'm going to have to go back and look at it to try to figure out where the hell Kinsler was.

He was wandering around shallow right field on the hit, and I assume he went to cover 1B as Cabrera is the cutoff man.  But he was out of the picture, so I don't know for sure.  At any rate, the catcher should never have to cover 2B, especially on a play where there's a play at the plate.

That's silly. Romine did his job, got on base to bring the tying run up, in the person of a hot hitter at that.

At least only the SS dove for it that time. Other two were perfectly in between 3B and SS.

Something special is happening. I have never seen a team with such timely hitting. They went four years without the kind of good fortune they are getting now on a regular basis. The team average isn't any better than it was last year, may be a little worse. The pitching is better, the bullpen is much better. It defies logic the way this team is consistently winning. I don't know how they are doing it, but they are, and I love it.
