I can't remember: was Corporan Keuchel's catcher last year? (Do Keuchel and Castro not click like Conger and Keuchel click?)

Not sure I'd describe it as a "personal catcher" situation, but Corporan caught quite a few of Keuchel's starts last year.  This is likely as much a "day game after a night game/gettaway game" rest for your catcher as anything.

Conger's caught him every game save Opening Day so far, according to my procrastinatory researches.

Then maybe there's more to it.  I'm not aware of any issues with Keuchel and Castro, but there may be.

Padres wearing their ultra-ugly brown and orange pinstripe throwbacks...

T1:

Altuve strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt
Marwin strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt
Valbuena strikes out swinging at a slider

Why do I get the feeling it's gonna be a long day?

Padres coming to bat

B1:  Ashby bitching once again about Keuchel getting borderline calls

Myers singles to RF
Solarte, with Myers on the move, flies out F8.  Myers has to retreat back to 1B
Kemp triples to RCF wall,, Myers scores
Upton pops up F4, Kemp has to stay put
Middlebrooks grounds out 4-3

Nice job limiting the damage, but the Padres take an early 1-0 lead

T3:

Marisnick leads off with not only contact, but a double down the LF line
Conger walks to bring up Keuchel...Ashby speculating he might be bunting, but suggesting it's a lot to ask
Bud Black out to the mound, as they too suspect Keuchel might try to lay one down.  Cat and mouse, I tells ya.
First pitch to Keuchel ...catcher can't handle it, and Marisnick heads up moves to 3B on the passed ball.  Conger still on 1B.
Keuchel strikes out looking
Altuve with a sac fly to CF.  Marisnick scores.  Conger inexplicably still standing at 1B with his thumb up his ass.
Marwin grounds out 4-3

But the Astros tie it up.  all square at 1 run a piece.

I hate all this pitch count stuff unless a guy is coming off of an injury. If the guy looks good and feels good then let him keep going. You can see he isn't tired and if he's gonna be your ace(and I think he is) you have to let him go finish his work.

I hate all this pitch count stuff unless a guy is coming off of an injury. If the guy looks good and feels good then let him keep going. You can see he isn't tired and if he's gonna be your ace(and I think he is) you have to let him go finish his work.

a man after my own heart.

Keuchel still in there

Barmes...one pitch, grounds out 5-3
Nieves grounds out 5-3, another nice place by Valbuena on a slow chopper.  Really like him at 3B
Derek Norris pinch hitting for Thayer...grounds out 3U.

On to the 9th...Astros still up 3-1

Speaking of finish his work, 1-2-3 8th for keuchel and only like 11 pitches I believe. If it were me I might let him try to finish this himself.

Valid point.  Let's just hope there isn't an Aerosmith concert this summer.

And that's all for Kimbrel, Maurer in

Marwin grounds back to the mound, pitcher throws it away at the plate, Altuve scores, Marwin reaches on a FC and moves to 2B on a TE1
Valbuena flies out F7
