I can't remember: was Corporan Keuchel's catcher last year? (Do Keuchel and Castro not click like Conger and Keuchel click?)

I can't remember: was Corporan Keuchel's catcher last year? (Do Keuchel and Castro not click like Conger and Keuchel click?)
Not sure I'd describe it as a "personal catcher" situation, but Corporan caught quite a few of Keuchel's starts last year. This is likely as much a "day game after a night game/gettaway game" rest for your catcher as anything.

Conger's caught him every game save Opening Day so far, according to my procrastinatory researches.

Then maybe there's more to it. I'm not aware of any issues with Keuchel and Castro, but there may be.

Thanks, Coach.

Padres wearing their ultra-ugly brown and orange pinstripe throwbacks...
T1:
Altuve strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt
Marwin strikes out swinging at a slider in the dirt
Valbuena strikes out swinging at a slider
Why do I get the feeling it's gonna be a long day?
Padres coming to bat

we are playing possum

B1: Ashby bitching once again about Keuchel getting borderline calls
Myers singles to RF
Solarte, with Myers on the move, flies out F8. Myers has to retreat back to 1B
Kemp triples to RCF wall,, Myers scores
Upton pops up F4, Kemp has to stay put
Middlebrooks grounds out 4-3
Nice job limiting the damage, but the Padres take an early 1-0 lead
-
T2:
Springer strikes out looking
Rasmus strikes out swinging
Carter strikes out swinging
Gonna get ugly folks
Padres up 1-0
-

we got 'em where we want 'em.
-
So what is the record for strikeouts to start a game?
-
B2:
Gyorko grounds out 5-3
Barmes strikes out looking
Nieves grounds out 5-3 on a nice barehaded grab by Valbuena
We've played two...Astros chasing a run
-
So what is the record for strikeouts to start a game?
I assume this is rhetorical and you know this, but for anyone who doesn't...
Eight...by Jim Deshaies of the Houston Astros

works everytime

I hope it's more than 6.

I didn't know, but was just looking to jinx it
-
Altuve leads the team in RBI.
-
Marwin being annoying. 19 pitches in 2 at bats
-
T3:
Marisnick leads off with not only contact, but a double down the LF line
Conger walks to bring up Keuchel...Ashby speculating he might be bunting, but suggesting it's a lot to ask
Bud Black out to the mound, as they too suspect Keuchel might try to lay one down. Cat and mouse, I tells ya.
First pitch to Keuchel ...catcher can't handle it, and Marisnick heads up moves to 3B on the passed ball. Conger still on 1B.
Keuchel strikes out looking
Altuve with a sac fly to CF. Marisnick scores. Conger inexplicably still standing at 1B with his thumb up his ass.
Marwin grounds out 4-3
But the Astros tie it up. all square at 1 run a piece.
-
I didn't know, but was just looking to jinx it
I thought this was pretty common Astros lore. At any rate, you learn something new every day.

It's perfectly explicable. Have you ever tried running with your thumb up your ass?

I knew it, then forgot it, now I know it again.

B3:
Cashner strikes out swinging
Myers flies out F9
Solarte grounds out 4-3
We've played 3...
Astros 1 Padres 1

Keuchel settling in now
-
That's Astros baseball! Rasmus 2 run dinger!
-
Maybe they were just getting the strikeouts out of the way early
-
Maybe they were just getting the strikeouts out of the way early
That's the pattern.
-
I'm slowly coming around on this Rasmus guy.
-
Rasmus!
My wife thinks Rasmus looks like someone you'd find in a public library in the 1970s. We've started referring to him as "the Library."
-
Never mind haha just Astros baseball as juliogotay says. Might strike out 3 times in an inning but might have a 2 run Jack also
-
T4:
Valbuena flies out F9, as Kemp really battles the sun
Springer doubles to LF
Rasmus HOMERS to RCF...Springer scores, Rasmus scores!
Carter strikes out looking
Marisnick strikes out swinging to end the inning
That's 9 strikeouts through four innings, BUT...the Astros pick up a pair on the Rasmus big fly
Astros 3 Padres 1
-
Rasmus!
My wife thinks Rasmus looks like someone you'd find in a public library in the 1970s. We've started referring to him as "the Library."

It's brutal when you know that one ER is going to up your ERA.

The look on uptons face when he saw marisnick caught it haha
-
Rasmus!

He looks like an extra from the movie Urban Cowboy and that maybe he drives a 75 Ford Torino.
-
She's pretty weird.
Don't get me wrong I was 6 in 1979. But I grew up in the country. I remember going to the library once or twice. there was never anyone else there other than the librarian.
-

Doyce, you gotta stop with the haha thing.
-
B4:
Kemp grounds out 4-3, nice play by Altuve on a slow chopper
Upton flies out F8 as Marisnick makes a great catch, crashing into the wall
Middlebrooks grounds back to the box...1-3
Astros throw some leather around, keep it a 3-1 lead
-
I was thinking Randall Pink Floyd

This exactly.
Extra from Dazed and Confused.
-

I went to public libraries a good bit in the 70s, and I probably looked a bit like that then. What's your wife's name?
-
Marisnick has been a revelation.
-
This exactly.
Extra from Dazed and Confused.
I got one right!!! I win.

I assumed something with a KLOL sticker.

Rasmus strikes me as less of a stoner extra and more of an uncanny resemblance to whatever this guy was http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/screenshots/10_things_i_hate_about_you_2.png (http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/screenshots/10_things_i_hate_about_you_2.png)
(although my street cred wishes I was linking Dazed and Confused, and not 10 Things I Hate About You).

Would it be more acceptable if I admitted to be drinking more than I probably should this early in the day?

The Joker?
-
T5:
Conger lines out to SS in CF (shift on). Score it F6
Keuchel strikes out looking
Altuve with an infield single to SS.
Looking for Altuve to try to take a bag?...guess not
Marwin pops out F6
Astros 3 Padres 1
-
I assumed something with a KLOL sticker.
KIKK more likely.
-
Would it be more acceptable if I admitted to be drinking more than I probably should this early in the day?
No. That's a commonplace.
-
B5:
Gyorko lines out F4
Barmes strikes out swinging
Nieves flies out F7
Stros lead 3-1, after 5
-
No. That's a commonplace.
My bad. At least this year it's been happy drinking
-
Chris Carter wouldn't know a quality at bat if it swung and missed at him.
-
T6: Cashner took the throwback idea a little far, with the perm and mullet
Valbuena with a lead off double over Kemp's head in RF
Springer flies out F9, Valbuena moves to 3B with one out
Rasmus pops out F5 in foul ground
Carter grounds out 6-3...Valbuena leadoff double wasted...
Astros 3 Padres 1
-
Chris Carter wouldn't know a quality at bat if it swung and missed at him.
His OBP is .280+, so he's walking with some power.
-

While I did enjoy that movie (and agree that is a good one also), I'm sticking with Dazed and Confused because Mark agreed with it.
-
B6:
Cashner, who looks a little like the late Leon Wilkeson from Lynyrd Skynyrd, with a leadoff single to CF
Ashby simply will not shut the fuck up about balls and strikes
Myers called out on strikes, Ashby continues to whine
Solarte flies out F9
Kemp grounds into 4-6 FC, Cashner out at 2B
through 6...Astros still lead 3-1
-
Hey keuchel got a hit
-
T7:
Marisnick flies out F9
Congere grounds out 4-3
Keuchel with a single up the middle
Altuve flies out F8 to end the inning
At the stretch...Astros still holding on to a 3-1 lead
-
B7:
Upton pops up F4
Middlebrooks pops up F4
Gyorko grounds out 1-3
Through 7...Astros still up 3-1
-
I assume that's all for Keuchel. Nice job.

Anybody up in the bullpen? That's usually a sign I think.
-
Anybody up in the bullpen? That's usually a sign I think.
Neshek and quals both got up in the 7th. Neshek seemed much closer, quals I think was just getting loose
-
T8:
Thayer in to pitch for the Padres...
Marwin draws a leadoff walk
Valbuena pops out F4
Springer flies out F8
Rasmus flies out F9
Astros 3 Padres 1
-
I'm guessing Keuchel will want back out there.
-
Keuchel continues in the 8th. I'm glad to see it
-

yeah, boy.

I hate all this pitch count stuff unless a guy is coming off of an injury. If the guy looks good and feels good then let him keep going. You can see he isn't tired and if he's gonna be your ace(and I think he is) you have to let him go finish his work.

a man after my own heart.
-
B8:
Keuchel still in there
Barmes...one pitch, grounds out 5-3
Nieves grounds out 5-3, another nice place by Valbuena on a slow chopper. Really like him at 3B
Derek Norris pinch hitting for Thayer...grounds out 3U.
On to the 9th...Astros still up 3-1
-
Speaking of finish his work, 1-2-3 8th for keuchel and only like 11 pitches I believe. If it were me I might let him try to finish this himself.

how many pitches? will they let him try for CG?
-
Keuchel ERA sits at 0.73 after the 8th.
-
While I did enjoy that movie (and agree that is a good one also), I'm sticking with Dazed and Confused because Mark agreed with it.
Valid point. Let's just hope there isn't an Aerosmith concert this summer.
-
this is the kind of situation I like to see Kimbrel.
-
how many pitches? will they let him try for CG?
115 pitches, 73 strikes according to MLB app
-

Currently at 115 i think

i'm sending him back out, but I will not be surprised to see the closer.

could get pinch hit for. now likely as carter moves to second, no one out and Dallas in the hole
-

My thoughts exactly. He's earned a chance to finish this game. I'd be surprised if he pitches the 9th though
-

Well unless they just wild pitch carter home
-
Who is this Marisnick guy?

a man after my own heart.
We all are. You formed us as youths.

makes me proud, I tells ya.

Lack of DH ends Keuchel's day
-
Astros running wild!
-
Lack of DH ends Keuchel's day
I hate not having a DH.
-
there is this thing called the score. what is it?
-
Closer in a non-save situation
-
there is this thing called the score. what is it?
5-1 Astros.
-
there is this thing called the score. what is it?
5-1 Gattis on first, no one out. Kimbrel pulled
-
5-1. Gattis just swatted one backhanded. It didn't have as much power as his overhead slam.
-
When you have speed and you use it, you force teams to make plays. This team doesn't know how to not force the issue. I love it
-
5-1 Gattis on first no one out. Kimbrel pulled
how did all these wondrous things happen?
-
Marisnick just scored after Nieves tries to throws Marisnick stealing 3rd, but throws into LF instead.
-
Carter also scored from 3rd on a Marisnick single to RF.
-
ok, I checked my Score app
-
Hoes just scored on an Altuve triple.
-
5-1. Gattis just swatted one backhanded. It didn't have as much power as his overhead slam.
POTW if we had such a thing.
-
Good lord. This implosion is UH-GA-LEE.
-
Good lord. This implosion is UH-GA-LEE.
break 'em up
-
Un-be-lievable.
-
Altuve scores from 3rd on dribbler by Gonzalez. Bad throw from pitcher trying to throw Altuve out allows Gonzalez to reach 2nd safely.
-
Springer flies out to end the top of the inning. Astros 7-1. Bottom of the ninth.
-
T9:
Kimbrel in for the Padres...
Carter draws a leadoff walk
Carter moves to 2B on a wild pitch
Carter moves to 3B on a wild pitch
Marisnick singles to RF, Carter barely beats the throw in from RF, but scores
Marisnick steals 2B, as Nieves can't seem to catch anything
Conger pops out F2
Marisnick steals 3B, throw goes into LF, and scores on a TE2
Gattis, pinch hitting for Keuchel, singles to CF
And that's all for Kimbrel, Maurer in
Altuve doubles, Hoes pinch running for Gattis scores, Altuve to 3B on the throw
Marwin grounds back to the mound, pitcher throws it away at the plate, Altuve scores, Marwin reaches on a FC and moves to 2B on a TE1
Valbuena flies out F7
Springer flies out F8 to end the inning, but the Astros tack on 4 runs
Headed to the bottom of the 9th....Astros now lead 7-1
-

-
You mean I've been sitting here doing PBP all afternoon for nothing?
No, for us, which is next to nothing.
-
Carter lazy assholes his way in to an error on a popup behind first.
-
How's Springer doing?
-
Blum cracks me up.
Padre hits a screamer foul up the 3rd base line. Fan reaches over the railing to try and make a play and it clanks off his hand and/or the wall.
Blummer - "What are you DOING, man?"
-
B9:
Myers with a popup to 1B, Carter nonchalantly let's it bounce off his glove, Myers to 2B
Solarte grounds out 6-3, Myers to 3B
Kemp grounds out 5-3, Myers scores an unearned run
Upton flies out F8 to end the game...
Astros sweep Padres with a 7-2 win

No, for us, which is next to nothing.
Apparently so.

Thanks for doing it though. It's the only way I kept up with the game.
Who won?

Apologies, HH. I thought you had gone away. I did not have TV. Outstanding pop.

No worries. We gotta figure out a better system for long innings where a lot of things happen.
-
This has reached ridiculous levels. Ridiculously Awesome.
-
I hope they keep it up at home.

This has reached ridiculous levels. Ridiculously Awesome.
The scary part is we were an eyelash from going 9-0 on the road trip. That loss in Seattle was a bitter one, missed late opportunities.
-
I hope they keep it up at home.
No shit. 16 of the next 20 at home, with a weird reach around series in Los Angeles of Anaheim squeezed in there. Perfect opportunity to crush some spirit.

That seems like too much work. I'm just glad there seems to be renewed interest in the GZ. It can be a ton of fun when we have a full house.
-
meant to say this earlier, glad you are back posting.
+1
-
Half any summaries are great, but it is tough with no TV when something obviously is happening, but no one says what. The top of the 9th was like that.
-
You mean I've been sitting here doing PBP all afternoon for nothing?
Maybe he has you on ignore.
-
Thanks for the pbp, I'm not allowed to watch tv while I work. Bastards.

Book closed on Kimbrel; He allows 3 earned runs. Before today, he had NEVER allowed 3 earned runs in an appearance (dating to 2010).

Yeah, there was a shot of Hinch talking to Keuchel after Keuchel's day was already done. Ashby asks Blum, "What do you think Hinch is saying to Keuchel at this point?" Blum: "'I love you'"

Personally, I post each at bat what happens. But it's a lot more of a commitment, especially when there are a lot of posts happening.
