CBSsports.com is doing this series (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25062727/franchise-bestsworsts-houston-astros) on each franchise. Fun read. (h/t Greg Rajan)
I do not remember (thankfully) that Reds game.
-
I remember that game. It was very ugly. There are some good memories there. Hopefully the team will make some more this season. Didn"t Bob Knepper have a similar outing?
-
I still think Kent's walk-off was more exciting, regardless of what happened the next night.

As far as excitement, Hatcher's Homer is the most I've ever been over a baseball game.

Hard to believe a game started by the inimitable Jim Clancy would end so badly for his team.
-
remember chris holt and the alarm going off and no one got up to leave..

Agreed... and the foul ball he hit just prior to the homer made it even more enjoyable.

I think this is the 22-7 game Bob Knepper started in 1987. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN198706030.shtml) Really a team effort.

The weird things you remember... I was a kid, and it was an afternoon game on Channel 20. I had the TV on while cleaning my room. That sort of task can take a long time when you're 10, but I remember I was still done before the first-inning ended.
Amazing to see that, even with that crazy inning, the game still took just 2:16 to play. Also, note that the Astros only used 3 pitchers in the game.
-
As bad as the Pujols v Lidge moment was, the Astros won the pennant the next day. It cannot compare in my mind to Game 3, 1999. Nothing out-devastates Game 3.
-
To me the Leyritz homer off Wagner in '98 was worse than Pujols off Lidge in '05.

Thanks for the reminder, asshole. I knew there was a reason I was glad when he went to jail.

The Astros were still the 60% favorites (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU199810010.shtml) to win the game after the Leyritz home run. Not so after the Pujols bomb, when they went from 93% winners to 19%, making the Pujols home run the largest single game impact play in Astros postseason history.
My worst moments are the Kevin Brown game (so I guess after Carl Everett's flyout to end the game), as that was Houston's best chance to win the World Series, and the Pujols home run.
Yes, they won 2 days later in St. Louis, but the 33 minutes of euphoria after the 7th inning Berkman 3-run homer and the Pujols homer, juxtaposed against the silence afterwards just sucked. Would have been nice to win it at home, a la the Rockets, especially since I was there.
Best moment was Jeff Kent. The most I've ever felt MMP was like Yankee Stadium. Fans throwing beers in the air in jubilation ... just crazy. And it was to win a game, so you could let completely loose.
-
Funny how stuff sticks with you but the worst feeling I've had as an Astros fan by far is when Bass K'd in the bottom of the 16th.
-
And as bad as I felt after Pooholes' bomb, they had another shot and they got it done. While it certainly impacted the pitching rotation for the Series, I wouldn't label it as the worst post-season moment ever.

I'm still going with Walt Fucking Weiss for that one.
-
And I think Brandon Backe deserves a shout-out for his performance in the Jeff Kent game, too. Maybe it wasn't the best moment, but it was sweet nonetheless.

Well see, I couldn't watch that game since I had to work so in my mind, it never happened.

This is my "worst" Astros moment as well. I distinctly remember the feeling to this day, 28 years later. Just sucked the life right out of me... A close 2nd was when I heard the Astros were moving to the AL although that is a malingering, despondent suck that is not really getting any better with time.

I truly felt that everything that had happened up until that point meant the Astros were destined to win that game and game 7 as well. I was young and naive but I truly felt it. Completely fucked me up for a good bit of time.

I confess... I've come to accept this.
-
One of my worst moments as an Astros fan was the trading of Lance Berkman. Not because I wanted to keep Berkman, necessarily, but because I realized what was about to happen...complete tear down to the studs and starting over. And 100-loss seasons for a while.

I still look at the NL standings first and get confused because I can't find Houston.

Me too. I actually kind of enjoy the AL (ducks).
-
The bully melt down against the Phightins in 1980 has to rank up there.

Same here, but for some reason I don't check the standings as often as I used to.

I believe to this day that a healthy J.R. and they would have won the WS.

I believe the same with Pettitte in 2004.

WTF!!!??? Where are your priorities, man?

I don't know if its worse that I have come to accept the AL Astros or that I agree with roadrunner.

Wait, the AStros weren't always in the AL?

you tend to forget...wonder if mmpus has mind control

It's not as important when "last" is a given.
ETA: I still look to see if we won, etc, but checking to see how many games we are out of 1st on a daily basis is the kind of self-destruction I reserve only for things that come in bottles.

Yep. By a wide margin. I don't think I've ever seen it on TV but I can recall the image from my right field line lodge seat of that swing and a miss in my mind's eye with excruciating detail.

I will be looking to you for backup for all of my hot takes this year.

Didn't know Clayton Williams posts here.

me too, Mike, and I had a ticket to Game Seven.
