Title: Emeril's NOLA
Post by: Andyzipp on December 08, 2014, 01:57:03 pm
I may end up being "required" to eat at NOLA this weekend.

Is there anything redeeming about this place, or should I start scheming now?

I've eaten there a couple of times.  It's actually very good.

That's good to hear.  I've eaten at a couple of his Vegas restaurants, and wasn't blown away.

It's hard to get away with shoddy food in New Orleans.

I wouldn't say I was blown away either time I went, but everything was good. It's not on my short list of restaurants in the quarter to go back to, but I certainly didn't consider it to be a wasted meal.

In my experience, high-end restaurants in Vegas aren't as good as restaurants in Houston, despite wildly higher prices.  Seems to me that the first, second and third ingredients in every dish is salt.

Best item on the menu is the Vieux Carre. Have a couple and you won't care if the food is any good.

Venue has been changed to Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse.  I feel like I upgraded.

Excellent choice. I've eaten there many times.

My only experience with Emeril and his restaurant was a friend of mine who wondered why he always got a great table there until his wife divorced him to marry Emeril.

Can't go wrong there.

The place highest on my list to hit again next time I'm in New Orleans is Adolfo's in the Marigny.  We had dinner there a couple of years ago, but after a many drinks during the couple hour wait at the Apple Barrel downstairs (which included a tequila shot with Rick Reilly who shockingly is not less douchey in person) I have only hazy memories of a veal drowned in ocean sauce that was absolutely awesome.  I need to confirm my memory, but the way the place is set up it's difficult to make it to the meal with faculties intact.

I am not familiar with Ocean Sauce..is it a proprietary recipe? Looking at their website it looks like they will put it on about everything.

It's their specialty.  Basically a shrimp, crab, crawfish, shit load of butter, white wine sauce that tastes like heaven.

This has nothing to do with anything, but I was in the San Francisco area this weekend, and I ate a shit load of fresh crab (Dungeness season started last week).  It was probably closer to two shit loads.

Where did you eat it? I'm looking for some new spots in SF

Certainly looks good in the photos. I'm thinking about, when I retire in a few years,  to rent a house or apartment for a month or so in favorite cities and N.O. and San Francisco are the first two places I would go. I'd probably gain fifty lbs. though.

Crabs are everywhere.  Crab season just opened, and it's apparently the best year in many years.  We bought some right off the boat in Half Moon Bay, and there was a restaurant right there at the pier that cooked them for us.  Also at some place on Pier 39 in SF.  But you can get them anywhere between now and the end of the year.

I always suspected San Francisco was a great place to get the crabs.

Apparently, since landscaping has become the norm, crabs are a dying breed.

Had to try this last night at Julep on Washington...  I concur to its awesomeness.

It's my go to drink this holiday season.
