Olney reports on ESPN that Maddon has opted out of his contract, effective immediately.
Following his old boss to LA, perhaps?

Good thing the Astros snatched up A.J. when they did.
-
I'm guessing Mrs. Archer isn't too happy with this message.
RT @ChrisArcher42 You're only as faithful as your options.

I heard an interview with Archer. There was no animosity at all. Said he understood how everyone must always look for what is best for them and their family.

My first thought exactly.

Moi aussi.
My second thought was that I'll bet the Rangers are also thrilled that they snapped up Bogar so quickly.

I get it! Irony and pity! You're waking up with irony and pity! I hear it's all the rage in New York.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. It seemed wrong as I was typing it, so I looked on Wikipedia (further confirmation that I'm an idiot), but the last manager listed there was Bogar, so I went with it. Of course, that's just the end of last season, and if my brain had been engaged I would have figured that out. Oh well.

Why in the hell would Joe Maddon want to come manage the Astros anyway? I mean, maybe if they paid him $12m a year, but otherwise, why?
-
My guess is he takes a year off for TV and then goes to the Dodgers, Cubs, or Cards.

same reason he may end up in Chicago?

I don't think the Cards job will be open. Matheny is going to be there a long time.

Will the Astros be open by then?

Maybe he likes the look of the talent in the pipeline? I also doubt that he'd come to the Astros, but situations like this are why I was disappointed to see them settle for A.J. Hinch so quickly. I doubt that other teams were beating down his door.

Maddon is a crusty, old-school baseball guy. I don't think he fits in with Luhnow's "we'll pick your staff together" way of thinking.
-
And Maddon to the Cubs. Fuck. I mean Fuck the Cubs.

Nothing about Maddon indicates he's old-school at all, other than that he's, well, old.

Other than the fact that he appears to prefer to think for himself.

i so totally understand

Wow, the Cubs hired Maddon before they actually fired Renteria.
