Title: Chavez Ravine
Post by: NeilT on May 28, 2014, 09:14:52 am
I'm supposed to go to Los Angeles for an exciting set of meetings between now and Sunday.  Every hour is jam-packed with my colleagues, and it just doesn't get more exciting than that.  I thought though that maybe Saturday I would disappear for an hour or three and go to Chavez Ravine, where two NL teams are playing.  I've never been.  Any thoughts on transportation (I think I'm at a downtown Marriott), food, beer, life.

You're in LA, do it right. Either rent a convertible sports car or a vintage ride and spend some time showing it off on your way to the game and back. Top down, shades on, big nasty redhead by your side is part of the LA Way, vato.

Cruise Sunset, drive to the beach and head to Malibu and back. Catch a flick at the Cinerama Dome. Get a burger and banana pie at the Apple Pan. Check LA Weekly to see who's playing and go, maybe see some comics at one of the clubs if you don't see music you're interested in.

LA is the King of kickass strip mall restaurants. They all look like shit on the outside but the food is amazing.

Downside of Chavez ravine is that there is nowhere proximate to the stadium for food or beers.  Even of you were open to walking a few miles, it just isn't really possible.  The stadium is more or less its own exit off of the freeway, and, as the name indicates, is in a little ravine surrounded by parking lots.

Other than that aspect, which I love about the older stadiums and the movement towards relocating new stadiums in more urban settings, the experience at the stadium was very enjoyable, so cal weather playing no small part.  Dodger dogs occupy a tier below the gas station hot n ready, so skip that unless you're purely pursuing palliative measures related to high levels of beer consumption, although that too may be unwise.

My information is based solely on Curb Your Enthusiasm, but you can pick up a hooker to provide a passenger so that you can take the HOV lane to the ballpark.  Hilarity may or may not ensue.

Maybe the Saturday night dinner at the Marriott is sounding better.

Do not go walking around downtown LA at night. A corollary to this is: spend as little time either sleeping or in your room as you can. LA is a great city with an endless series of options available to you. Make some personal history while you're there.

Dang.  I thought that was going to Chavez Ravine.

It can be, if you follow the instructions above. Taking a cab or the bus is so pedestrian, and LA is best enjoyed with a car.

This bit here is no joke. There are very few cities that I can think of where the good things are less obvious than LA. In my experience you really either have to know what you're doing, know someone who does, or do an awful lot of research ahead of time.

In my case it's research because I obviously don't know what I'm doing and I certainly don't have a rolodex full of porn stars to show me around like SOME people do.

Maybe I'll go to the La Brea tar pits.

Rent a convertible. Drive through the hills, drive to the beach, drive down Sunset. At least go to Laurel Canyon and cruise Mulholland.

Have a Fatburger.

This guy is not an idiot (http://ballots.latimes.com/lists/101-best-restaurants-jonathan-gold/).

If you don't have much time and don't want to rent a car, then use Lyft or Uber to get to and from the ballpark. I use both in lieu of cabs where I can and have used Lyft in LA with no issues.

I really like the San Francisco Bay Area. L.A. is a great big freeway.

Jonathan Gold is nowhere close to being an idiot. That he and Robert Sietsema are allowed to exist and do what they do is a miracle.

If you're staying in downtown hit up Little Tokyo for some amazing ramen at Daikokuya. The area is nice and safe since they've been renovating that area for the past several years. Large parts of downtown are scary though.

In a weird bit of serendipity I found this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQYPup6Ro9k&feature=kp) last night while browsing around for something else entirely.

Nice, I like that. It sure does show Randy Newman's genius - remove the joke and you've still got a damn catchy song that works.
