Personally I like Frank McHugh, the actor who played Bing Crosby's sidekick priest in Going My Way. He has a better arm than Collin.

And no decisions thus far. Hopefully the offense will give him some support tonight.

Apparently he has been on the 40-man for a while.

Here was the excitement for him in the offseason. (http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.php?topic=116309.msg487571#msg487571)

Sparks just rescinded the earlier award - JR Richards threw 15 in his debut.

I was sure that Sparks was wrong. I listened to J.R.'s debut back in 1971. I recall that it was in the second game of a twin bill against the Gints in September, who had Willie Mays, and I think that he got Mays at least three times. James Rodney Richard could flat throw.

ETA: Okay, I spiked my own curiosity, and so I went in search of that box score, which I found. My memory was correct. I just remember being riveted by that rookie who had just come up from OkC, which I think were the 89ers back then. Box Score here (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN197109052.shtml)

Especially since an unknown Jimmy Rosario was in CF. But that was at the end of Mays' career. I think that 1972 was his last year with the Gints. I think that he played for the steM in 1973 but was awful.

Did you read the Willie Mays biography from a few years ago? Great, great read. Really gets into all aspects of his life, including his relationship to the social issues of the time (like Jackie Robinson essentially calling him an Uncle Tom). And gives a good account of those sad last couple years with the Mets.

I read it, and liked itcularly.  I remember being fascinated with his early life, just because the descriptions of growing up poor and black in the South were so well done.  I  vaguely remember that his participation in racial politics were a bit like Louis Armstrong's--he just wasn't as obvious as people wanted him to be.  I don't remember any reason not to be a fan.
