Title: Throwing at a guy for bunting in the 1st inning?
Post by: Navin R Johnson on April 19, 2014, 11:17:09 am
I can somewhat understand getting miffed at a guy trying to bunt for a hit in the 9th inning of a 8 run game.  But to get so mad, that you try to bean a guy, for attempting to bunt in the 1st inning?  WTF.

Im not sure Porter makes it through the season, there are rumblings in the background.  Maybe the team stinks so bad that there is no point in firing him, but I can't see him being the manager next season.

He was being a cry baby, and everyone knows that there's no crying in baseball. He needs to go.

I thought Porter's dugout tantrum was in response to his players' - particularly Altuve - fraternizing with Lowry on the field after the inning was over.

I assumed it was because his pitcher couldn't successfully bean someone. Only half joking.

Basically, I assume it's just the frustration boiling over.  I like Porter and hope he can turn things around, and think he will, but am curious as to how that might occur. Having some players step up and lead would also help, but I have no idea who those might be.

It'll occur when the Astros get some Major League talent.  Not before.

This.

He only has 4 ML quality position players and 5 ML quality pitchers.  That's it.

Let me see if we are thinking alike on the ML quality players. Positionally: Castro, Altuve, Fowler and ? Springer hasn't earned that label yet.

Pitching: Feldman, Obie, Qualls, Albers, and ?

I'd throw in Dominguez, though he's off to a slow start. Not a Silver Slugger at 3rd, but he's not gong to be a liability, either. On the pitching side, I'd throw in Fields and Bass has been good. I'm reluctant to say Keuchel, but somehow, he's leading the club in K's (non-hitter division) and has been okay, overall.

If that was it, then it is even more ridiculous than the other possibility. They are former teammates. Get over it, Porter.

I'd agree with all of that.

I didn't see the Lowery play but I think anything goes against a defensive shift.

Cosart? I've been impressed by him, the other night's performance notwithstanding.

Absolutely. He belongs there, even though I'm not sure right now that his ultimate spot isn't in the back of the bully.

My original post was about Castro, Altuve, Fowler and Springer - I acknowledge that he's not been there long, but his is ML talent.  On the pitching side it was Feldman, Cosart, Obie, Qualls and Albers.

Exactly, that makes throwing at him and getting your panties in a wad even more ridiculous.  Porter looks like a fucking fool in all of this.

The Roseboro/Marichal story always makes for riveting reading. Thanks for posting it.

I wonder what kind of suspension that would draw today. Also today Marichal would almost certainly face criminal charges.

And Porter goes after Lowrie AGAIN.  What a fucking joke, Bo Porter looks like a fucking idiot in all of this.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/oak/astros-paul-clemens-tossed-after-plunking-oaklands-jed-lowrie?ymd=20140424&content_id=73278482&vkey=news_oak

"There's no other way to say it," Lowrie said. "Every perspective, every angle you look at it, it's embarrassing. That kind of conduct should be condemned.  He throws at me twice in Oakland, and then throws at me again today. For a number of reasons it's embarrassing. I had him in an at-bat before, I hit a double off him, and then he throws at me the first pitch. I've never seen anything like it."

Hard to disagree with any of that.

This all stems from a guy bunting in the 1st inning.  Unbelievable.

Lowrie is trying to make Porter look like an idiot, but what I read from various blogs, tweets and garbage I read instead of doing useful things, I'm pretty sure that he isn't a complete idiot and there are a couple of extra variables that aren't being aired in public.

Here is what Astros County has to said that sort of covers some of it (http://www.astroscounty.com/2014/04/on-retribution-and-astros.html), but I'm choosing not to get too worked up about it and hopefully it will go away.

Agreed.

It is also kind of embarrassing that there appear to be roughly 25-30 people - total - in the stands.

What else could it be? Porter is a sniveling whiner on this one. End of story.

If Clemens did what Singleton said he did, I can see why Porter wouldn't talk about it.

It's not like Clemens is the most controlled player on the team, either. I remember him having to tone down his emotions last season. So, it is possible that he was acting on his own.

The whole drama is ridiculous and a diversion from a real crappy start, and while the Astros certainly look small in this episode, Lowrie should just shut the fuck up.

Yep, it is time to move on.
