Is Jesus Guzman really the leading candidate to play 1st base?

I read something about a Guzman/Wallace platoon at 1B, but I guess Amador or Singleton or whoever will probably get some time there.

Not really a better option unless Singleton scorches the ball over the next few weeks.

Carter, JD Martinez, 1 of the 3 catchers, random fan picked from the crowd?

Carter is the DH. JD has never played first base in professional baseball, and has knee issues that likely would prevent him from doing so. Why are you so down on Guzman? Whoever winds up playing first base for this club Opening Day is just a placeholder for Singleton anyway.

Guzman is 30, and has never hit more than 9 homers.  At least he doesn't K and an alarmingly high rate....

Doesn't look like they tried to rank the Bully at all.?

Then how does he fit on the Astros?

Guzman's never played a full season in the big leagues and here are his career splits:

.286/.358/.460 vs L
.238/.298/.385 vs R

Wallace:
.212/.264/.306 vs L (I'm not making that up)
.249/.324/.413 vs R

Mike Simms career totals (just for fun):
.247/.323/.464

So looking at Guzman's stats again, he did put up decent #s 3 years in a row at AAA for SFG.

wallace?

Yes, Wallace. Just because he's off of the 40 man roster doesn't mean that he doesn't have a shot at making the club.

Where's Springer?

Obviously coming in, probably around the fourth or fifth inning.

Raup, the Younger and I could platoon at 1B.  I guarantee you we wouldn't strike out any more than Wallace, Carter and Martinez.

Recapping last night's game, the Good Guys win 7-5. Good news: 12 hits, including 6-16 w/ RISP. Bad news: pitchers issued nine free passes, including four by Harrell; hitters notched 10 K's. I felt a little badly for Wallace and JD Martinez: Wallace was 0-3 with two K's and JD was 0-2 with a K. Not a good start for two guys on the outside looking in.

That's good stuff. Have I missed an announcement on whether the blackout restrictions will be eased up for the Astros on MLB.TV? Will I at least be able to watch the spring training games that are televised but not on MLBNetwork?

I'm not aware of any changes from last season on tv.

Not as good today. 5-1 Detroit in 8th. All Detroit runs scored off of Peacock in his one inning.

Good Guys lose to Detroit 5-1. We could only muster four hits, and Correa got the only extra base hit, a double. The hitters are still up to the strikeouts, notching nine. Peacock faced nine hitters in an abysmal inning. Feldman and Folty each threw two scoreless frames.

Where's Springer?

I read he'll be held off the team until May to screw up his negotiating position when his contract is re-upped. Sounds about right to me, but someone can factcheck this.

Springer is in spring training.  He pinch ran and stole 3rd in the 1st game and started and went 1 for 2 yesterday.

It will give the Astros ANOTHER ENTIRE YEAR of Springer before he hits free agency. Every single team in MLB would do, and has done, the exact same thing given the circumstances. It's just how it is. No controversy to see here, let's move along.

Those players won't be on the chart at to start the season; the first cuts have been made with no real surprises:

From the club:

RHP Jake Buchanan, RHP Bobby Doran, OF Leo Heras, IF Jonathan Meyer, C Ryan McGurdy, RHP Jason Stoffel, IF Ronald Torreyes, RHP Nick Tropeano and OF Preston Tucker were reassigned to minor league camp.  RHP Paul Clemens was optioned to minor league camp.
