Title: Chronicle of the season
Post by: djmutto on May 20, 2013, 04:13:00 pm
Due to a silly bet with a friend, I've been following the Astros this year. Since they are pretty much a triple A team it's been rough. I've been chronicling the season and it' s brutal. I'd love to have some real Astros' fans check out my site, and tell me what they think. I look for new and interesting Astro related stuff every day, and it looks like this message board can definitely help. Click the link and tell me what you think. I'm just happy to find some people to share in the pain.

What was the bet?

If you're going to write about the Astros, you shouldn't write about extraneous stuff that has nothing to do with the games.  Just stick to what happens between the lines.

That's my advice.

Astros' total wins over 58.5. I took the over and we've been going back and forth all season. It started with emails and texts, but then I upped the Annie and made the website

Just don't believe any of it.  I enjoyed the website, but in a season like this you take your amusement where you can get it.

If you place the Astros into a personal context of heavy drug and alcohol use and casual sex, it seems to help.  At least that's our experience here.

Well, before you get too comfortable, I need to tell you that this isn't the place to pimp your site, no matter how good you think it is.  Please remove your link.

No worries, I'll remove the link, but you can't make me leave. I heard there were lines of some sort.

I don't know, but I've learned that the most negative and/or inane posts I've seen the last few years about the Astros often tend to begin with, "I've been an Astros fan for XX years, but..." or "I'm the world's biggest Astros fan, but..."

I kind of like the development of ironic Astros fans.  Between the haplessness of the present, the colorful uniforms, and the sabremetric promise of the future, there's just enough room on the bus for the whimsical internet-hipster contingent.

I played baseball in juniors and preferred it to cricket which made me a minority.  The sport was really hard to follow here because of the lack of information, sometimes the weekend papers would have scores or a very occasional article.  The WA Baseball Association used to get films of MLB and show them over our summer and I started liking the Astros mainly because of the uniforms and the dome.  When they started putting the www on computers it became much easier to keep up with the sport.  I started checking scores daily and eventually bought the radio subscription and then MLBtv.  My wife in convinced I bought a Dodge because of all the years listening to the radio where they said numerous time that ‘this broadcast is brought to you by your Texas Dodge dealers, remember, bigger in Texas better in a Dodge.’  She may be right.  What was strange was when I was reading this day in Astros history on the Astros Daily site, I was born on the day the NL Commissioners voted to allow Houston to join the National League.  Strange huh?  Probably wouldn’t get an X Files episode out of it but it is a little weird.

If you're in WA, I'm assuming you're in Perth (cause there ain't squat else in WA), and I think Houston and Perth are about as far apart from each other as two points on the globe can get.  So there's probably some cosmic ying/yang/north pole-south pole/180-degree psychotic thing working for you too.
