Title: And so it begins
Post by: Uncle Charlie on February 23, 2013, 06:06:24 am
Looking forward to Houston Astros baseball starting today.  Harrell v Hamels.  Now just have to decide between game day and audio before noon.  Woke up early today and am anxious to hear a crack of the bat.

Yep.

Yep.

Mlb.tv is of no help in watching regular-season Astros games for us in Austin, right?

That is correct. We'll be able to listen to the audio feed of either team.

You may be able to rig some sort of proxy gateway, but it'll be likely to knock the bandwidth down pretty significantly.

Not live, at least. They archive the games 90 minutes after their conclusion, so you can watch it after that point. Not the same, but still an option.

I'm pretty psyched to hear the new radio teams debut today.

Harrell was pretty wild in the 1st.
Corporan made a horrible throw on the Revere steal.
Dominguez had a brain fart and forgot to go back and cover 3rd on Howard's AB.

The Astro hitters look mighty anxious so far.

But, it is nice to see baseball again.

There's a weakly attended GZ thread (http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.php?topic=115323.0). It's Spring Training, so no PBP going on.

Thanks for the GZ headsup, RB. I really enjoyed it.

Hello, new guy here. Been lurking here since the last quarter of last season.

The game showed promise with Barnes and Cosart, I'm hopeful that it's more than a one game thing.

On a side note, I found it interesting that the players didn't have nameplates on their jerseys. I wonder if this is a spring training thing or if this will be a regular season thing also.

Welcome.

The names on the jerseys thing is a Porter motivational device. He wants them to 'earn' them.

I guess that begs the question, how does a team earn an individual goal?

It's not like they're gonna give Barnes and Cosart nameplates, and the rest of the team goes without. Then again, I've never coached a team so I won't Monday quarterback the decision.

What is interesting is that it is only a major league camp issue. The minor league guys have names on the backs of their jerseys.  I guys part of that is the help coaches and others know who is who among the 100+ players in minor league camp.

I figure it's an excuse for management not knowing who's on the roster.

Also Luhnow can use it as subterfuge for trade negotiations.

It'll be like a livestock auction. No names, just "I'll take that one, and those two over there."

It's my understanding that not only do they black you out based on the location of your IP address, but the zip code on your billing credit card cannot be in the blackout area as well.  I might be wrong about that but I think I remember someone saying that a while back.

It's just your IP address unless they can't confirm it's location in which they use your CC address. I've run into that in the past when I was out of state and using my phone as a hotspot for my laptop.

Anyone else have a problem watching the Astros/Mets game today on MLBTV? I don't live in the Houston area right now, I'm actually in Phoenix, and there was no available video for any games other than the Yanks and the Jays.

There wasn't a problem, there was no telecast and only the Astros broadcast the game.

Roger that. Any idea on the frequency of spring training games for MLBTV? I thought most, if not all, comes with the price tag.

I think you can see more than half the games, but they don't show a lot of the split ones. Very few of them don't have at least one radio feed.
