A double OT game and now this. I will say it's fun to see capers fuck up his own plan time after time.

I don't recall it being that much fun.

Once upon a time I was sure Vic Fangio was an incompetent. It turns out he's not, at all. He just needs to work in a competent organization.
-
Great games. Kapernick presents serious problems.
-
I had to go to a thing with my wife last night, so I missed the end of the DEN-BAL game and all but the last 3 minutes of the SF-GB game. I was listening to the DEN-BAL game on the radio while we were on our way, and just before we reached our destination I heard the 70-yard pass to tie the game with 30 seconds left. When I head that it was Jacoby Jones on the receiving end, I just started laughing. Fortunately, my wife was driving, or we probably would have had a wreck.

Second year in a row he's come through big for the Ravens in the playoffs.
-
Texans take note: it is possible to come back if you're down by 20 at the half.
-
Brian Billick: what a fucking genius. Seattle's down at the Atlanta 25 (or whatever) on 3rd-and-10 with 40 seconds left in the game, down by 6. Billick let's us know that they're probably in 4-down territory. No shit; really?
-
I noticed that, too. Just shook my head.
-
Matt Schaub is useless.
-
3rd and 12? 6-yard pattern sounds good to me.
-

Baffling. play calling has been a head scratcher and Schaub's reads at the line have been awful. Throw in Barwin's inability to tackle in the backfield for a bonus.
-

Not if you've been watching the Texans the last seven years.
-
Kareem Jackson's continued presence on this football team angers me.
-
I liked Schaub audibiling right into the run blitz. Genius.
-
I liked Schaub audibiling right into the run blitz. Genius.
He's done that several times today.
On the other hand, this current drive has shown what I always say. When the Texans run the ball out of passing formations they have excellent success.
-
Well, they did better there, and they're showing some spine today. We'll see what happens in the second half.
-
Hell of a kick there!
-
Hell of a kick there!
Yup. And I hope that Carroll's brain-cramp today is the end of the "ice the kicker" strategy. All you're doing is giving the guy an opportunity to sight things in.
-
Grouse all you want about Schaub. Defense has been horrendous today.
-
Grouse all you want about Schaub. Defense has been horrendous today.
I'll grouse even more now: that was fucking pathetic. He manages to bounce out of the pocket and he's clear of any trouble and just flat-out panics and throws the ball out of bounds. He's scared shitless, and no team with Super Bowl aspirations can put up with that.
-

He has no confidence at this point.

And apparently no grip.

Incredible. What a dork.

Schaub was so surprised he actually scrambled out of the pocket he dropped the ball.
And suddenly the offense is moving!

The Patriots consistently field the whitest fans in the NFL.
-
And the team is stuck with this fucking pussy for the next four years.
-
And there's the Schaub we've been waiting for...
At least he hit a wide open guy.
-
All 4 TDs have been pretty much untouched.
-
I guess it's time Kubiak throws in the towel
-

NFL contracts seem to be very voidable. Maybe the 49ers would be willing to send us Alex Smith.
-

If the towel looks anything like a challenge flag he'll be throwing it all over the fucking place.
-

Did you measure against Seattle?

The Texans already have a guy who's not good enough to get to the Super Bowl, why the hell would they want another one?
-

Shiny bauble?
-
Kubiak should be fired for that play call alone.
-
Nice gutty effort on 4th-and-1 there, Schaub. Ridiculous.
And there goes the game.
-
Jesus, how many times are we going to try to cover running backs with linebackers?
-
Brady is as good as Schaub is bad. That's a tough obstacle to overcome.
-
Jesus, how many times are we going to try to cover running backs with linebackers?
Shit like that makes me wonder about Wade's supposed genius status.
-
Kubiak is just saving Foster for the playoffs.
-
This could be Kubiak's first good challenge.
-
Kubiak can't even throw the red rag like a guy.
-
This team is impotent.
-
This could be Kubiak's first good challenge.
Holy shit.
-
This team is impotent.
Welcome to Houston.
-
How about some pressure on Brady here guys?
-
Does any other team have more 2-yard patterns in their playbook?
-
I don't think Kubiak understands that down 18 points means 3 scores so maybe you should pick up the pace a bit.
-
That's high comedy: Schaub on a QB draw. Because he's so fleet of foot.
-

He knows he has a free play so he decides to shake and bake his way into the end zone. Awesome.
Their goal line formations are so fucking ill-conceived it is absolutely incredible.
-
Man, they had a real chance on that on-side kick. Too bad.
-
If this game had been at home, they might have won. Too bad they spit the bit down the stretch.
-
Well, in spite of everything else, they had a pretty good season and went about as far as they could with the personnel involved.
-
Well, in spite of everything else, they had a pretty good season and went about as far as they could with the personnel involved.
True, but AJ is probably on the downside of his career, so we'll need to find somebody who can take his place in a couple of years, we need to find at least one CB who can actually cover, and we probably need to find a QB who isn't scared of his shadow. That's going to take a while. They're going to get a tough schedule next year, so I wouldn't be surprised if they miss the playoffs next year.
-
Pretty good is not nearly good enough with the talent the team has somehow assembled. They did the same fucking thing last year with a third string quarterback.
-
If this game had been at home, they might have won. Too bad they spit the bit down the stretch.
They spit the bit at home by losing to lesser teams than New England.
This team will never succeed with Kubiak and Schaub protecting each other.

Bingo!

Did you think this team had much of a chance today? Schaub and Kubiak don't really stack up to Brady and Belichick, and they never will.
-
Well, in spite of everything else, they had a pretty good season and went about as far as they could with the personnel involved.
No they didn't. That's the sad part. They went as far as they could with Matt Schaub. Huge difference.
Funny thing, after last season, people were thinking "with a healthy Matt Schaub it might be a different season". No it wouldn't have.
-
Did you think this team had much of a chance today? Schaub and Kubiak don't really stack up to Brady and Belichick, and they never will.
But it's not because they don't have as much talent as the Patriots.
-
Did you think this team had much of a chance today? Schaub and Kubiak don't really stack up to Brady and Belichick, and they never will.
They had a chance, sure. A real chance. Although they would definitely have had to overcome the obstacles you mention.
That fucking Cushing injury was a season-changer. It completely changed the complexion of the defense. I'm not whining about it; everyone has injuries to play through. But man, that hurt.
And I'll never understand how the offense just withered over the last two thirds of the season. Or why. Schaub looked like a totally different guy in 2010. I wonder if his injury totally changed his bearing.

A torn vagina is quite serious, I'm told.
-

I'm still laughing at that self-directed quarterback draw on the play with the defensive offsides penalty.
-
If this game had been at home, they might have won.
And if the Golden Globes had been held in my home, Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry might have double-teamed me.
-
Man, they had a real chance on that on-side kick. Too bad.
Two Texans had their hands on the ball. That and Schaub's hideous interception were plays that this team could not afford.
-
Schaub's hideous interception ...
That was gobsmacking. He stared at his receiver for an eternity, the safety stepped in front and set up for a catch, and Schaub threw it right at him.
I seriously think that Schaub's brain simply cramps up in big games. The overall level of his dumbfuckery was off the charts yesterday. 3rd and goal at the 1, and his pass doesn't make it to the endzone. Prior to the the no-hope charge at the end, his longest completion was to Foster - in the flat, which Foster ran for 22 yards. Prior to their death rattle, the Texans never threw deep. Even at the death, with no time and down by 2 scores, they were still throwing 5 yard crossing patterns.
I should've turned off the TV when they were gifted a 1st and goal off the opening kick return, and turned it into 3 points. Way to make a statement!

They didn't know what to do in the red zone on either side of the ball. As everyone's stated, this team has reached its apex with the Kubiak/Schaub.
-
Wade shouldn't be left off the hook. How many times in the red zone did N.E. catch them asleep at the snap?
-

The potential for an upset was there, which is what makes it so frustrating. Casey never drops a pass, and yet he did on the first possession. The defense makes a stop the next possession, and the Texans start marching down the field throwing the football. I assume Kubiak sticks with his script rather than continue doing what has been working, and the drive stalls.
If it's 10-0 or 14-0 after a couple drives, maybe NE starts to have familiar feelings about past playoff failures. Maybe not though considering how Belicheck obviously made adjustments at halftime and came out slicing up the D, while I can only presume Kubiak and Schaub sat in a corner of the locker room biting each other's nails.
-

Yep. They owe me a beer for that one.

The difference between Schaub and Brady is enormous. The awful interception followed by a perfect Brady strike for a TD couldn't have expressed it any clearer.
It's time to draft a Russell Wilson/Kapernick type QB in the 2nd or 3rd round.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing what TJ could do. I know jack shit about football, but TJ does appear to have an arm, and can move more than Schaub. Not that drafting a QB is a bad idea anyway...

I'm not crazy about those kinds of QBs. I don't necessarily want a running QB, just one who isn't glued to the ground.

Hey, we saw Bad Schaub for the last month or so of the season. He's the number one reason why they lost their playoff bye. When TJ was forced into the mix last year, everyone raved how TJ was similar to Schaub, but younger and with a better arm. Just wondering if anyone thinks that's even remotely true.

They aren't the same quarterback. But to be fair, I'm struggling to understand what Schaub's strengths are anymore. The things he does well were not in evidence after the Detroit game.

I was watching a re-run of the Detroit game a week or so ago (it was playing at the Texans Grill). It was the same Scahub in that game that we have now, so it's at least since the Detroit game, but probably back to the Jag-bacle the week before or even beyond that.
-
Weird. I just looked at the box score for yesterday.
Houston had:
* More time in possession
* More 1st downs
* More plays
* More completions at a better success rate
* Less penalties with almost a 1/3rd less yardage lost
* Only 22 yards less total and only 1 yard less passing
* The same number of sacks for the same lost yardage
* The same number of punts
How the fuck does that turn into such a beating?
-

I'm not looking for my team to make an occassional run...I want them to be perennial contenders. I don't see either of those guys having much success four or five years down the line.
-
They also need a WR, OT, TE, multiple ILBs, a CB...
They also need a new special teams coach, a new kicker and a new punter. Special teams killed them in the last 6 weeks when they were playing good teams (though ironically it was one of the bright spots yesterday).
-

Their new kicker was "injured" this year. Completely agreed on the special teams coach, the Texans were far and away the worst in the league.
-

One team scores and the other team doesn't.
-

You also have to look at guys like Trindon Holliday and the success he had in Denver. He didn't suddenly become a good returner. You have to seriously look at the coaching and scheming going on in Houston.

You can. Jones had his ups and downs in Houston, as he did in Balt. I think Holliday was a bigger miss for the Texans. But both are evidence that it was coaching, not a lack of talent, that hurt the return game.

Quick scores. Brady and the Pats attack so much faster with bigger plays. A comeback was never going to happen because our offense is so slow and methodical. That Posey play was an anomaly.

The things that stand out in the numbers is that:
* Patriots got more yards per completions
* Patriots got more yards per run
* Patriots had zero interceptions (and never "went for it" on 4th deep in their own half - which is like an interception)
* Patriots average more than 20 yards extra per punt
This last item is quite staggering - it meant that the Texans had to go an extra 100 yards just to get back to even on punts. In itself, it can explain how the statistical superiority in possession time, 1st downs and completions was not turned into points.
So the numbers support the above criticisms of the special teams' performance.
-

This part is indeed irritating, the lack of situational understanding by Schaub. Down three scores yesterday, he's still huddling them up. With a free play from the 3 yard line, he tucks it and hits the ground, wasting another 50 seconds. There is no situational awareness and no sense of urgency.
-
And why didn't Kubiak challenge the spot on the 3rd down play (or was it 4th down?) that was close to a 1st? If anything the spot would've moved up. The second half was incredibly frustrating.

He injured his delicate wrist flicking the flag out earlier in the game.

That was on 3rd down. And I guess he figured timeouts were too valuable, when he's going to go for it on 4th and inches anyway. The 4th down play was ridiculously stupid, of course, but not challenging that play is defensible.

Pendergast nails the Schaub era. (http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2013/01/matt_schaub_is_the_worst_kind.php)
Well worth the entire read, here are a few highlights:
****
For the foreseeable future, Texan fans, this is your quarterback and this is your head coach. Save the "What if we cut Schaub?" and "Fire Kubiak!" phone calls to talk radio. The former is locked in courtesy of a four-year, $62 million extension that he was gifted the day before the 2012 season started, and the latter is locked in thanks to a culture that, top down, handsomely rewards being "pretty good," eschews change and craves comfort over conflict.
****
But to me, the coup de grace on the day that Schaub finally lost me occurred with 9:58 to go in the fourth quarter. The Texans were trailing 38-20 and any chance of fishing this game out of the fire required a quick score, replete with long strikes down the field and a palpable sense of urgency.
What we got instead was an 11-play, 73-yard dink-and-dunk fest that, while ultimately successful on the scoreboard in cutting the Patriots' lead to 38-28, was an abject failure in clock management in burning 4:47 off of the clock.
That drive was the perfect Schaubian metaphor with seemingly gaudy statistics (9 of 10 for 61 yards, a touchdown pass, 125.4 passer rating) masking his glacial pace getting to the line play to play, his methodical instruction to everyone in the huddle, and his utter disregard for a dwindling game clock. ZERO game-management chops.
In short, those nearly five minutes perfectly encapsulated the Matt Schaub Conundrum whereby his ever shrinking number of supporters will cite his career statistics, his passer rating and his list of largely meaningless wins over the last two seasons, but his critics will know what they see -- a plodding, deliberate, decidedly average quarterback to whom his head coach delegates almost zero freedom.

Spot on. And Pendergrast is right - we're stuck with Kubiak/Schaub for awhile.

Agreed. That article just described perfectly - in non-expletives - the issue about which I have only ever been able to splutter expletives. In random combinations.
-
I'm not football maven, but to me watching the Texans makes me think of George McClellan...hurry up and wait, careful now, stay the course, the other guys are bigger/stronger/faster...

Re: questionable arm strength. There's a commercial running currently in which Schaub extolls the virtues of some medical establishment or other. I rarely pay it any attention.
Last night, Miss Limey - in the midst of doing her free-weight arm reps - points out that the dumbbell Matt's slinging is a might 10lber. A massive 2lbs heavier than the one she was curling.

It's so hard to get excited about next year.
Go....Rockets?

Other than the last few games, the Rockets are quite an enjoyable team to watch this year.
I've been critical of him, but Morey deserves awards. Quite an amazing transformation of the team in one year.

I have no doubts Schaub is a big strong guy. I just think he's a puss on the field.
-
The Texans remind me of the late 80's - early 90's Saints... a roster filled with All-Pro talent but with Just Some Guy playing QB and Whoever That Is coaching...

If it makes you feel any better, it's supposed to be when he was rehabbing his broken collarbone last year and the exercises he was doing were much more strenuous on his shoulder than curls and would require him to use less weight.
I doubt it though, since it doesn't throw Schaub under the bus and back over him a few times.

Gary Kubiak Congratulates Houston Texans on Yet Another Houston Texans Season (http://www.theonion.com/articles/gary-kubiak-congratulates-houston-texans-on-yet-an,30934/)
HOUSTON—Following his team’s loss to the New England Patriots last weekend, Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak reportedly gathered players and staff to congratulate them on engineering yet another Houston Texans season.
“I know some of you are still disappointed, but no matter what, we can hold our heads high for putting together back-to-back Texans seasons,” said Kubiak, adding that after winning 11 of their first 13 games, the team’s ability to succumb to crucial injuries, totally lose momentum, and eventually bow out of the playoffs in the divisional round made it “one of the most Houston Texans seasons in franchise history.”
“Things didn’t always go our way, and plenty of people doubted us, but we came together when it counted and finished with a classic Houston Texans run down the stretch. And I’m proud of each and every one of you for that.”
According to team sources, Kubiak singled out quarterback Matt Schaub in particular for having the most Matt Schaub season of the nine-year veteran’s career.
-
Yeah, I don't think that was meant to be taken literally.
That a way to keep defending him HH. To the death! Or at least to the pain.

Yeah, perhaps I'm just a Limey apologist, but I honestly believe his comment was meant to be a pejorative dig at Schaub's toughness in general, not that Limey was literally suggesting that Miss Limey was physically stronger than Schaub.
It's kind of like when I refer to Kubiak "stepping on his dick". It's a figure of speech. I don't really believe that Kubiak's dick actually measures 48-60 inches in length.

Yeah, perhaps I'm just a Limey apologist, but I honestly believe his comment was meant to be a pejorative dig at Schaub's toughness in general, not that Limey was literally suggesting that Miss Limey was physically stronger than Schaub.

You're correct, although I would say that her intestinal fortitude is way stronger than his (there's a lay up there for someone who wants to take it).
However, I do think that he has a water barrel of a torso and then these two thin noodles handing from his shoulders. It's a bizarre physique, especially for a quarterback. It also may be the reason he has to hurl his whole body into even short throws, and why they all are slow, sometimes wobbly and with an exaggerated arc - all of which contribute to incompletions and interceptions.

Every time he throws the red flag.

Noodles? The guy is what, 230? He is not buff by any stretch, but let's not get carried away. His arms don't look like those of say, Aaron Rodgers. You would never want your QB to have those teeny tiny arms like that guy has...
Fucking bicep size has jack shit to do with how much zip you put on a football. His "barrel torso" would have a far greater impact. Bash him because his decision making sucks or he cannot run a two minute offense...any football related reason, the negative statements made in regard to his physique are weak.
-

How's the golf game? FH and GiR still for the most part? Bastard! And none of that Patton/Rommel magnificent shit, either.
Our best to Mrs. Sporadic. Later.

He's listed as 6' 5" and 240lbs. My bashing of his physique is that he clearly does not have the arm strength to throw the football like an upper echelon quarterback. Rogers doesn't have arms like tree trunks either, but he throws the ball with incredible velocity and reportedly has the quickest release in the league (NTTAWWT).
Schaub is only an average at best QB because of his inability to get much on the ball, even when he has time to set, and zero on the ball when he doesn't. His slow release, a result of his need to set those cinder block feet of his and heave his dustbin body (http://www.telewin.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/dustybin.jpg) into the throw, make him easy prey for a savvy secondary.

I have seen Laurie Schaub. You, sir, are no Laurie Schaub. Intestinal fortitude, forsooth.

My point is his physique has very little to do with the veliocity of his passes...you seem to be trying to connect the two. Now, his apparent lack of fast twitch muscle fiber is another story. Mechanics and release give you zip...that downward flick of the thumb and forefinger. I am weak as well water, but can throw a football pretty well because I made countless throws up against a wall, on one knee, both knees, feet together, etc growing up...learning the appropriate release. I can tell you these are things Schaub has done as well...but at the end of the day you either have that explosion in your release or you don't...and the size of his arms (or the size a dumbell he lifts with them) does not have much to do with that. Also, Schaub is no more a rag arm than Peyton Manning currently is. Or Joe Montana and Roger Staubach were. I think ragging on his physique is a stretch...especially when there are other, more important, things you could be ragging him about!!!

Don't just stand there,
Let's get to it,
Throw a pick,
There's nothing to it,
Schaub!

Entirely possible. I have more windmills at which to tilt than Holland.

Actually pretty well, better than it has been in about 15 years (went through a TREMENDOUS slump about a year ago). Trying to not give a shit...seems to be working. Mrs. Sporadic is great, just had baby Sporadic(a) a couple of months ago. Life has given me more great things than I deserve.

Yes, yes they apparently can. I thought that the clock management at the end of the first half cost them a chance to score a touchdown.

The Harbaugh brothers face each other in the big game. Cool.

Yes, take away the regular season wins, the records, the pro bowls, the playoff wins, the Super Bowl rings and the MVPs, and Tom Brady is basically just Tony Romo.

Mmmmmm....Underwood [/homersimpson]

The one he knocked up and had to marry.

No way. Jessica Simpson has to be about three times larger than Gisele now.

Of course, I was referring to the regular theme of the fake Facebook threads in which losing qb's are often defined Romoetically.

Jessica Simpson looks like she ate Gisele Adele.

Gisele runs her own business (actually several businesses), is at the very top of her industry and makes $45 million dollars a year. That's a lot more than just a pretty face. She's a force to be reckoned with.

sure, but this whole thing came about as to Giselle being "hotter". I disagree with that...although I would not kick either of them out of bed - unless they wanted to do it on the floor, of course.

To me "hotter" includes what that person does with their life. I also loved when Gisele bitchily defended Brady after the Superbowl. "My husband cannot throw the ball and fucking catch the ball at the same time!" Now that is hot.
But, yeah, they both seem very happy with their respective marriages and I wish them all the best.

Proud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!

That's probably the best website I've ever seen about soccer. I guess it's important to have something to do between goals.
