Title: Astros @ Brewers 9/30/12
Post by: Ron Brand on September 30, 2012, 02:43:51 pm
Adios, mofos, after today. Just got here from feline transport and its 5-0 Good Guys in the top of the sixth. Lowrie and Dominguez both hit homers.

Welcome to no postseason play, Brewers.

Lyles makes it through six and he's only allowed two hits.

Earlier home runs by F-Mart and by Lyles. First home run by an Astro pitcher this season.

Peen hit into two double plays today before that weak chop went for an infield single.

Going to the bottom of the ninth. I think Lyles is at 90 pitches.

Complete game shutout for Lyles! He ends it by striking out The Peen.

Not a bad way for the kid to end his season today... Complete game shutout. 4 hits (all singles) by the top run scoring team in baseball.  Got his first (and likely last) home run (thought it might be his last AB as a NL'er).  Not bad, not bad at all there Mr. Lyles!(even Mr. Happy might have nice things to say about the kid today!).

And just to add, FYB!

OSF: If you've read all of my comments about young Lyles, they're far from all negative. He's got at least two plus pitches, and when he's on, he has command of four pitches, which is top flight big league material. I didn't get to see him go today, but after having read the stats, I liked his pitch count (103) and his walks (1).

I would have expected a few more strike outs on such a good day, but he apparently had such good command today that he could pitch to contact and conserve pitch count. I've loved Lyles gaining velocity on his fastball. He's only 21 and should still be in the minors. However, he's learning up here. His mental makeup will toughen too as he matures so that he won't have that tendency to fall apart somehow in the fifth inning of starts. He does need to work on how he finishes off left-handed hitters, who hit over .300 against him, but that too will come. Overall, I'm very optimistic about young Lyles. He has the talent to be great.

He said his curve and change weren't working for him today so he had to go slider-fastball and try to tease them to chase off the plate. It worked.

Only one LH hitter in Milw. lineup today.

Tony D's comments about Lyles after the game were interesting. He said he thought he had a little more fire-in-his-eyes today than he's had. He said he needs to step-up next year as the No. 1 pitcher on the club. He's had 1.5 yrs. in the MLs now and being 21 is no longer an excuse. He has the talent to get it done and it's time to show he belongs in the big leagues. He hopes finishing strong will give him confidence throughout the off-season.

I thought that the Brewers were light on left-handed hitters, which is just a part of the loss from not having Prince Fielder. It was a good fit for Lyles today.

I'm glad he thinks highly of Lyles, but how is Harrell not the #1?

Mr. Happy - Two words for you: Trolling (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trolling)

Actually, it was more messin' with you than anything (just because I could...).

Misc. aside: I found this entertaining... (Lucas via Twitter (https://twitter.com/GREGCLUCAS/status/252560023539052544)):

No respect. Lyles throws CG SHO then has to make bus trip to Chicago along with other first year Astros in speedo and swim cap...

Since I haven't had an opportunity to say it yet today (i.e. 10/01/12), let me just re-iterate FYB.  And let me add, it was damn nice to eliminate the Brewers from the playoffs!!!

More along the lines of 'poking the bear'...
