Armando gives up his first long ball to Pressley. 1-0
-
Dear Santa: please give me a game in which the Astros don't give up a first-inning run (or three).
-
Triple for Jones to Tal's Hill. Galarraga better get the ball down, or this will get out of hand in a hurry.
-

Dear Austro:
You got your allotment for the week last night. Keep those cards and letters coming!
Love,
Santa

Hey, this means he's Road Wandy tonight, right?
-
Wandy amped? He just hit 92 on the gun. I've never seen him get there before.
-
I'm listening to the KDKA feed while I'm in the kitchen. What a relief to not have to listen to those fucksticks DoRay. It's refreshing.
-
Hey, this means he's Road Wandy tonight, right?
We can only hope.

He's been getting there this year. Or at least I'm pretty sure I remember seeing that number on several occasions. Of course, I'm getting old.
-

Normally, that would be right, but this is the Astros, who are a great remedy for whatever ails a slumping pitcher.
-

I've seen every one of his starts for the past four seasons, and I've only rarely seen him even hit 91. He sits between 87-90 usually.

Mr. Happy, you're getting your wish in Chicago, they're twirling around like they've got St. Vitus' Dance:
“Dempster will have to answer some tough questions if he is still a Cub after the deadline,” one executive told me. “That will be one press conference I would want to see. He will have to explain to the fans why he chose to stay on a team that is going nowhere when he could have been in Atlanta and possibly pitching in the playoffs. That will be interesting to hear.”
That's from some jackal at CSNChicago.com, who thinks it's up to Dempster to allow the Cubs to get maximum value, and doesn't speak to any of the other angles. What a train wreck (http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/27/dempster-will-have-to-answer-some-tough-questions-if-hes-still-a-cub-after-the-deadline/).
-
At least I'm getting different commercials. Something about treatment for brain tumors is a little maudlin...
-
Maxwell's gonna get Eny here.
-
Well, if a walk constitutes a 'get.'
Don't you need a rabbi for that?
-
Come on. It's only the second inning and already Milo and DoRay are ignoring the action to blather on about nothing
-
Wow. Jeff King. I had completely forgotten about him.
-

That'll be something to see.
-

The Pirates announcers are just talking about the game. It's heaven so far.
-
Man, game reset coming out of the station ID, right into a crisp call of the action, then some salient color and then to setup for the next batter. That's how you call a game, dammit.
-
The light has come on for Carlos Corporan.
-
Pearce replacing Bixler?
-
Someone please settle a domestic bet:I say the roof is closed; Mrs. Happy says it is open.
-
Someone please settle a domestic bet:I say the roof is closed; Mrs. Happy says it is open.
It's closed, per the Astro web site.
-
Why didn't Galarraga bunt?
-
Wandy spots us a run on a couple of walks and a hit. 1-1 Top 3
-
Ennis whoring with one of the "community leaders." Get used to this. There's more coming.
-
The Pirates announcers are just talking about the game. It's heaven so far.
Wow, I switched over to the Pirate broadcast. The Pirates can have Grossman back. I'll take the broadcasters instead
-
Nice walk to get to Superman.
-

Isn't it great? No bullshit, no preaching, no moronic stories, just baseball.

Pitch around Pressley to get to Superman? Really?

Tempting fate.

Tempting fate.
hi, guys! are we winning?

Be careful on the 3-1, or it'll be

CJ turns back into a pumpkin August 1.

Better still for the guys who listen to the radio broadcasts this sort of corporate schlong gorvelling will soon be handled by an American Idol style contest winner!

Who is NOV?
-

All the hoopla, none of the talent. Yeek.
-
hi, guys! are we winning?
1-1 BOTTOM 3 , Coach.
-
Corporan No. 1 catcher? He's barely average defensively but he's better than Snyder and light years ahead of Castro.
-
Hi guys, are we not losing?
-
And Mr. Geezerdonk is in da house!
-
Johnson a trade possibility? That would make the season.
-
It's Coach!
-
Johnson a trade possibility? That would make the season.
I'm sure he's a possibility, but not a likelihood.

It's still early.

Brownie and JD were talking about rumors to the Yankees.
-
Brownie and JD were talking about rumors to the Yankees.
Oh please. Please.
-
That Walker guy can hit the ball.
-
And the second lefty to go deep. 2-1. SECOND DECK SHOT
-
Oh please. Please.
A guy can dream.
-
CJ turns back into a pumpkin August 1.
What does this mean, RB?
-
Galarraga has a nice easy motion and works quickly.
-
I guess that Bixler will stay until Lowrie gets back because he can play SS. Nice play there to end the frame, with an assist to Downsie. 2-1 Bottom 4
-
What does this mean, RB?
It means his effectiveness (and trade attractiveness) will vanish after the deadline.
-
What does this mean, RB?
It means that CJ has been hot through the trade rumor to the YANKEES.
-
It means that CJ has been hot through the trade rumor to the YANKEES.
I'd let him go for a hot towel.
-
Wandy is not sharp today, and the plate umpire has a fire sale going on the outside corner. I'd live out there.
-
Galarraga has a nice easy motion and works quickly.
He may have forgiven that cocksucker Joyce, but I didn't.
-
It's Coach!
yessir, Mr. B. just another day in Paradise for me.
-
Five walks for Wandy so far.
-
NOV is National Oilwell Varco, a huge, Houston based oilfield services company. They are one of the corporate sponsors that occupy a position on the large sign in left field that is a real plus for the city.
The fat CEO (sitting in the Diamond Club while his employees sit together somewhere in the upper deck) said they'd all grab shovels and go repair little league fields in Alief.
-
I'm trying something new tonight - baking a Nutella cheesecake. Won't eat it until tomorrow though. Hope it works out.
-
Hey you Apple IPhone folks: does Siri really work like it does in that spot?

There's money to be made on the backs of the proletariat.

I haven't read anything about the Yanks being interested in CJ. Where's that coming from?
-

Brownie on the broadcast is where I heard it.
-
This isn't the time to play fuckaround. Of course, anytime is the time for this team to play fuckaround.
-
Much, much rather have McCutchen leading off an inning.
-
Nice pitch from Galarraga on the swing-and-miss T5.
-
Hey you Apple IPhone folks: does Siri really work like it does in that spot?
In my experience, not in the slightest. I'm actually surprised every time it gives me what I want.

Pirates announcers gushing over Barmes' defense.
-
Pirates announcers gushing over Barmes' defense.
'Twas a damn fine effort from Barmes' there!
-
Maxwell!
-
I was not necessarily counting on that.
-
I KNEW THAT WE HAD a shot against Wandy today. He has no command of his hammer. None.
-
I was not necessarily counting on that.
Who was?
-
Couldn't keep Superman off base forever. Be careful with Jones.
-
Did you know? Chris Johnson is 7th in batting average among ALL MLB THIRD BASEMEN. (Do you think the Yankees read the GZ?)
-
Tough Luck there for Downsie after a nice play. But that chases Galarraga.
-
Did you know? Chris Johnson is 7th in batting average among ALL MLB THIRD BASEMEN. (Do you think the Yankees read the GZ?)
He is also 6th in doubles, and 3rd in triples!!! What a player!!!
-

That doesn't surprise me at all, especially given his recent streak. But he's clearly a .265 hitter.
-
Well, fuck me. Hits the guy on the 0-2. Bases drunk with nobody out to Alvarez.
-
That could've been even better if Corporan had thrown to 3rd. Still, not bad at all.
Awww, shit. Tying run.
-
Just your average 2U3 double play. And now a fuck up allowing the tying run to score. Fuck.
-
Let's get those signs straight, men.
-
That doesn't surprise me at all, especially given his recent streak. But he's clearly a .325 hitter.
FIFTY
(Fixed it for the Yankees). C'mon, we've all gotta work together here to make this trade happen!
-
Nice play by Altuve to end that inning. 3-3 Bottom 6.
-
FIFTY
(Fixed it for the Yankees). C'mon, we've all gotta work together here to make this trade happen!
Chris Johnson is the heart of this team. He'd be the kill shot in the AL East. I hope no one steals him away from the Astros.
-

And he's so AFFORDABLE! And he'll be under club control for like, a lonnngg time! No rental-type here.
-
Fick looks like another EDR. He better get the ball down though.
-
Maxwell saved Fick there. Another hanger.
-
Another hanger, but right to Altuve on one hop. Scoreless frame! Halleleua!
-
CJ just misses that one. He's really been hitting the ball well.
-
Oof. 10-pitch AB for JD, and he ends it by missing a fastball right down the middle.
-
Oof. 10-pitch AB for JD, and he ends it by missing a fastball right down the middle.
He battled, but no banana.
-
Guess folks actually go to the Coushatta casino. I don't get it.
-
Be careful to Jones here. Damnit. Runners on the corners with nobody out and the Angel of Doom coming into the ballgame. Pray for a miracle, but it'll be a miracle if at least one run doesn't score here.
-
What a pitch to Alvarez off the corner, which has been a strike all night from Rackley.
-
Well, the cheesecake LOOKS good, anyway.
-
Fuck. I tuned back in just as the pitch was being delivered to whomever singled into LF and scored McCutchen.
-
Another prediction comes through, so they score? Well, fuck me; I'm so rarely right. 4-3 Bottom 8
-
Fuck-a-duck. Another jam allllmost wiggled out of, but then not.
-
Guess folks actually go to the Coushatta casino.
I'd go if I thought there was a chance of meeting the woman who was leading in the commercials a couple of years ago.
-
Fuck. I tuned back in just as the pitch was being delivered to whomever singled into LF and scored McCutchen.
Jones out going to 3B, which was ill-advised.
-
Lincoln kinda looks like Jason Marquis. Here's hoping he matches Marquis' usual performance tonight.
-

Dude, he's pitching to the Astros.
-
There's the obligatory strike out from Bogusevic. Two outs to Corporan.
-
Surely we'll DFA Snyder and keep Corporan when Castro comes back?
-
Schreefer has found his niche-a new Ron Washington.
-
Surely we'll DFA Snyder and keep Corporan when Castro comes back?
Huh?
-
Who comes into pitch here, or does FeRod stay in there? I vote for FeRod.
-
Huh?
I haven't seen anything from Snyder-a subpar receiver and his stick ain't good.
-
At least we have our best sticks coming up in the bottom of the ninth.
-
We have sticks?
-
All right guys, go get 'em.
-
We have sticks?
Kindling, anyway.
-
Grilli on to face our best in the bottom of the ninth. Pray. Hard. Put on a rally cap. Spank the rally monkey. Anything for a win. I'm doing the recap tonight and would love to write about a walkoff win.
-
Fuck.
-
Time for CJ to deliver us.
-
12 straight.
-
And Grilli closes it out. 4-3 BALLGAME
-
Most of it was a very entertaining ball game.
-
I didn't really believe people who said this was an historically bad team. I was wrong.
-
Most of it was a very entertaining ball game.
I thought all of it was, even though we lost again.
-
I didn't really believe people who said this was an historically bad team. I was wrong.
It's a little like chemo. You've got to almost kill yourself in order for it to work.
-
I didn't really believe people who said this was an historically bad team. I was wrong.
I thought that LSU baseball was bad in the spring of 1979 (12-34). I think that this team is worse, relatively speaking to the level of competition, not a comparison of the two teams.
-
I haven't seen anything from Snyder-a subpar receiver and his stick ain't good.
But... you're talking about Corporan. Maybe he's improved a lot since he was up last year - I've barely seen him this stint - but if not, I don't see what he's got going for him except his bat's fairly hot right now. Snyder at least has MLB experience, and seems like the pitchers trust him. I know he hasn't thrown out many guys this year, but is he really a "subpar receiver"?
-
I know he hasn't thrown out many guys this year, but is he really a "subpar receiver"?
He's terrible. The Astros are literally the only team he could play for. I doubt most organizations with decent farm systems would consider him as a AAA catcher.
-

I didn't say that Corporan is good; he's not. He has hit a little bit this season, which is unexpected. Snyder is an awful receiver. About the only thing that Snyder does well is handle the pitchers, but his actual work behind the plate? Dreadful. Hell, throwing out a runner? Snyder has trouble enough just catching the baseball. Snyder's bat has been much worse than I expected. It's very slow; he hits only mistakes. I think that his back is a problem for him, but to me he's done as a big league catcher, which is why he's an Astro this season.
-
By the way, I saw that the Brewers just signed Quintero... which is odd, since he was just signed by the Marlins a couple weeks ago, and bb-ref makes no mention of him being released.
Anybody know anything about Powell's defense? Last I looked, he'd hit pretty well vs. lefties at OKC, which would seem to make him a good platoon partner with Castro.
-

I saw that too. He must have asked for his release, because that was quick. I don't know a thing about Powell.
-
I'm trying something new tonight - baking a Nutella cheesecake.
Tastes good, and you can illegally download mp3s from it.

I only saw one game with Powell and remember the scouts behind me derisively calling him "Tubby". He certainly looked that part, but not the part of a backup for a MLB team.

Well, not all catchers are shaped like Ausmus or Castro or Posey, though I guess 255 lbs (his listed weight on bb-ref) is a bit heavy even for a 6'3" catcher.
Numbers-wise, he's thrown out 40% of runners in his 107 MLB games at catcher, and 45% in the minors. So it seems he's got a pretty good arm back there, plus he's only allowed 3 passed balls in the majors, but obviously there's a lot more to being a competent catcher than just those things.
-

The criteria for catchers has changed a lot over the years. In days long gone, before, control freak coaches usurped the pitch calling (a back slide development, if you ask me), catchers were judged in part by what kind of game they called. But no more. Do they have soft hands back there? Are they "quiet"back there, i.e., how much distracting movement do they make? How well do they frame the pitches? How well do they block pitches in the dirt? How do they handle pitchers?
