Title: Left Field...something is coming.
Post by: Navin R Johnson on June 18, 2012, 11:06:34 pm
Just back from the game, snapped this picture

freshly welded brackets for some new signage video board?

Looks like it is gonna hide the train for 80% of its "trip."

I for one welcome our new huge signage overlords.

As a fan of the Bullpen Boxes, I would gladly welcome a screen I could see.

Looks to me like it's going to be some sort of banners or ads.  If the bottom three brackets are to support a video board of some kind, what is the smaller top one for?

These brackets are in the same approximate place that signage for the All Star Game was placed in 2004.  I would expect nothing more than signage.

I have heard a rumor that MMPUS is going to be "in line" for another ASG sooner than normal as part of the agreement to change leagues, but I doubt this has anything to do with that.

The ASG signage was much smaller and much less intrusive than this.

I was hoping that maybe a new video board got "lost" in transit for Crane Global....  Or maybe Jim was drunk and playing on eBay.  Sounds like it is going to be signage though.  I would imagine we will learn exactly what it is pretty soon.

Kind of off-track a little here, but I volunteer to run the video projection at church every once and a while. The person who was originally assigned to run the media program was not the best person they could have chosen (IMHO of course). One thing that this person did not like about my work was the way I used stylistic fonts to project messages for the announcements and music. Apparently, having a projection of 120' (almost a full back wall of screen space) is not enough clarity for this person. They also wanted "big fonts" every time. "Big fonts?" I asked. "Yes, make the fonts fill the screen!" - media director. "Seriously?" - me. "Yes, do it!" - media director. So the next week I did it to appease them and man, oh man, I felt bad for doing it too. It hit every nerve in my creative bones to have to go Gallery Furniture type of billboard announcement with a big arse "SALE" splashed across the screen.  So I begged to meet with the media director after the service to ask again if this was really what was wanted.

"Yes, absolutely" was the reply. "Do you mind me asking who said this was the preferred style for video projection?" - me. "Well,  no one, it's just my preference. You see, I took my five year old son and sat him on the back row one day and projected several screen with different font styles and sizes. I told him to tell me what the screen said and nothing worked until we got to this larger, bold, san serif font. Now do you see?" - media director. "Yes, you're nuts!" - me, smiling to let them know I was kidding... sorta.

A month later, the person resigned because of the complaints the church was receiving for the odd ways we were projecting on-screen. One comment was "I really like how Noe did it that one Sunday... why can't we do it that way from now on?" We do now and the media director now is the same guy who complained the loudest (our young adult pastor).

I didn't know my boss worked at your church.  He has issues about fonts and clarity as well on large formats such as banners and displays. Meanwhile I have a degree in design and have been studying art most of my life but what do I know?

I've never had a client tell me to make the logo smaller. I start so ridiculously small that when we meet in the middle it's usually just right.

JL: I believe the cover story of Sports Business Daily covered the story. There will be a release soon so stay tuned…

SBD front page says:

Quote
As part of Astros' $40M community program, 12 major corporate partners will see their names on a new sign at Minute Maid Park.

Those NL playoff pennants belong to bygone era. Only "long time" fans care about club history and we'll die sooner than all of the awesome new DH charged fans the club will acquire during those late-night games against bitter rival Seattle.

Oh it is just part one of the plan. Part two is holding them up for cash after they've gotten used to the ad if they want the nice ad to *stay* there. Things are clearly going to the highest bidder these days, so no one is safe and everyone is for sale.

Astros Owner and Chairman Jim Crane personally developed the plan with Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who has offered the club and its corporate partners many viable options of parks that need refurbishment.

Those two needed to consult an interior decorator of some sort. Or Ty in Tampa. Either way, this is what you get with "personally developed" pet projects.

My takeaway from this whole thing is that Crane is considerably smarter than Drayton. (Not much of an achievement.) Had it dawned on Drayton that he could go out to left field and suck corporate cock for money he would have soft-shoed it as 'tradition' and acted surprised that anyone objected. Crane's bright enough to seek cover in the shade of a ramshackle Fifth Ward sno-cone stand.

Rocket Ship.

Not sure if you're being facetious, but personally I am 100% in favor of this franchise shifting their motif back towards space travel.  You know... actually have something to do with their namesake.

Beyond the players and the games, anymore, it's hard for me to give a shit about how they fuck up the Astros'.
