He was from my wife's home town.  One of their two claims to fame.  the other was former tough guy boxer Eric Butterbean Esch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Esch) who went to high school with my wife.  Goober was something to be proud of.... Butterbean...not so much.

Goober was a lovable rube. He'll be missed. I didn't think about it enough and was a bit stunned that he was 83. I guess that he is still as he was on Hee Haw in my mind.

His steakhouse on Park in East Memphis had a nice run--not as long as the one in Nashville but we went there as kids hoping to see him (or Andy or Barney or Floyd or even Otis). We figured Aunt Bea was in the kitchen helpin' out. All we ever heard about him from the staff was that he was good people, even though they told my folks they saw him when it opened and not since.
