SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The Whataburger Patty Melt. The Chop House Cheddar Burger. The Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich. And yes indeed, the A.1. Thick & Hearty Burger. Whataburger’s most beloved menu items have never before shared the spotlight, each reigning supreme for a limited time only before taking a bow and letting the next shine on center stage. But no more.

Beginning Oct. 10 at 3 p.m., the four beloved sandwiches will appear all day, every day, side-by-side on Whataburger’s new All-Time Favorites menu. The only question for Whataburger fans now is: how to pick just one?

And I applaud you on your losses.

On the other hand, this season's flu bug can make you lose 7 pounds in 4 days of misery!

If you get anything other than the Chop House Cheddar Burger, you fail at life.

I'm a fan of green chile cheeseburgers.  You might even say an aficianado.  Whataburger's ain't half bad.

For some reason I think I know the answer but asking anyway.  Have you spent much time in West Texas/New Mexico?

Some would say too much.  Been working out there for years and lived there for a couple as well.

Right... that was a mostly rhetorical question.  I have family and friends from the area.  They all LOVE green chile cheese burgers.  Is that something you picked up before working out there?

They had a grilled chicken with a ton of grilled peppers and onions a year or so ago that was very tasty.

Had my first when I was in school, traveling to NM for geology field work.  Never had one before college though, so you could say my taste was acquired as an adult.  Now I get one (or two or three) every time I'm in NM, preferably from the Bobcat Bite when I'm in Santa Fe.  But Lotaburger works well too.  Also, lots of little oil field cafes out in the part of the world, most with pretty darn good burgers.

Some people I know went full retard when Whataburger made a huge deal about the A1 burger disappearing "forever".  They didn't believe me when I told them it was 100% marketing and that it would be back eventually.

Bonus points to those of you who correctly guessed that those people are all giant, rotund fatasses.

Goddammit, the closest Whataburger to me is in Texarkana. I have to drive more than halfway there to get to my deer lease, and I keep saying I'm going to go the extra 50 miles but haven't gotten around to it. I might do it this time.

Do people really like A1?  Serious question.  Can't say I've ever had that burger, patty melt & chedder chophouse are solid.

The green chile "Poodie burger" at, yep, Poodie's on 71 around Paleface is damn good.  The one at Alamo Springs Cafe outside Fredericksburg is probably my favorite in Central Texas.  Whataburger's is not bad at all, on wheat + grilled onions.

I love the Patty Melt, but the regular double with cheese and jalapenos is my fave there.

I was bad this past weekend and ate two.

I've never had any of the specialty burgers.  The rare times I go to Whataburger, I get the normal cheeseburger.  Sometimes with jalapenos.  And it is awesome.

How could someone not like A1??  Mix it with ketchup for fries and with cream gravy for chicken fried steak or rice.  If you cook smothered steak, add a bit to the gravy before simmering...reaaaallllly good stuff.  My 6 year old eats it on damn near everything.

A1's all right - it works well with lemon, butter, garlic, etc., if you need a really quick seasoning sauce/marinade for beef or chicken.  In quanity, it's a little tangy, though.

Anyway, if you take the paragraph you posted and if you replace all the A-1 references with "Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire Sauce", you have a pretty good picture of how it is around my house.

No love for the Pickapeppa Sauce (http://www.pickapeppa.com/)? When my funds were low, on many a humble night of yore, my dinner would consist of a bowl of rice with some Pickapeppa added in for flavor.

I would seriously enjoy a Pickapeppa Whataburger with cheese and grilled jalapenos.

I have this thing, when I go grocery shopping, regardless of what I have in stock at the time at home, I always buy a half-gallon of ketchup, I think it is . . . the big economy family size, anyway; and a fifth or whatever they call it of L & P worcestershire sauce.

The top shelf of my pantry looks like the back stock in a grocery store; but we ran out one time, which was very traumatic.

I know exactly where you are coming from! my wife is to buy mustard and Louisiana hot sauce every time she goes to the store. I feel you should never run out of essential condiments, especially when they cost less than a dollar

That reminds me of the time a few years ago that I was sitting with my dad and we were both in the mood for a martini.  He started mixing them and added the usual slightest touch of vermouth and it emptied the bottle.

My dad was absolutely shocked.  He looked at me and said, "I can't remember the last time I had to go buy a bottle of vermouth.  This bottle is probably older than you."

Non-food related, but every time my wife goes to Sam's or Costco she can't help but peruse the dog beds.  I know, weird.  Sure, our mutt chews hers up and it looks tattered, but every freaking time we get a new one it gets torn apart within days.  I have to write on our lists "No Dog Beds" just to keep her honest.  That's what kind of stickler I am at home.  Iron fist.

That, and we have about 3,000 boxes of Ziploc baggies of all sizes, in case anybody needs some.

In my house, asking why something was bought gets the automatic "You go next time"-card played.  We perpetually have one two many loaves of bread and the cereal boxes have begun taking over an adjacent shelf, but I don't dare say a word.

If you're in Houston I recommend the Hatch green chile burger at Little Bitty Burger Barn in near NW (on pinemont between Antoine and TC Jester). I assume that's the Buckhorn Tavern.  I've never eaten there, but it's rumored to be outstanding.  Bobby Flay showed up there for a green chile cheeseburger throwdown and got seriously punked.  Which isn't saying much as Flay's a complete hack.  But I've heard the burgers there are quite good.  Not as good as the Bobcat Bite, but pretty fucking tasty.

The other is at the Little Bitty Burger Barn--they don't serve it all the time, just when Hatch Chili Peppers are in season. Are there places in Houston you recommend?

The fruit, not the burger. And no they are not named after the country. They have no relation to the country. It's still spelled with an "e".

ChilEs are not pepper either. Another common mistake.

So you will willfully wallow in culinary ignorance?
I said nothing about not eating it.  :-)

You see! Chili, Chile, Chilly... This is the kind of shit that happens when you start mingling cultures. They never should have hired a cat from Ohio to pose as a Texan.

Not many places in Houston I know of serve a green chile burger, at least not regularly.

BTW--Thread got me craving a Green Chile Burger and I went to Little Bitty Burger Barn. Great, as always, and it's not just a seasonal thing anymore. Two guys own/run the place (Jay and Ricardo) and Jay says that he can now get Hatch Chiles year round (from a distributor who cryovacs them). So if you ever go there and you don't see it advertized on one of their signs try asking for it anyway.

The Patty Melt is quite fun.

Holy shit.  Grabbed one of these on the way home.  Had to pull over to finish it, it was so messy.  Nice call.

Downside was getting home and finding out it has 1050 calories, so I'll be on the elliptical a bit longer than normal tonight...
