BYU looks ready for the "upset" so far. Mack looks ready for another round at the alumni buffet.
-
Rice must really be awful to have lost to this team.
On a positive note, they kept the rugby punt. It is freaking ingenious.
-
Are Longhorn fans booing #7 or are they booing Mack Brown for continuing to play #7.

only mack can engineer a 3-man QB controversy. people think it's easy too, but it takes foresight, strategy, and dedication for such a scenario to plausibly occur.

Hey, they survived against Purdue today!

What do you reckon BYU tailgaters get up to? I can't imagine they're all that exciting. At least you'd know everybody's name right off the bat.
-
Is there any reason that Gilbert should play in the second half?

i can't imagine a worse way to spend a meal than dinner at applebees with chris berman and carson palmer's brother. an hour of shitty food while listening to berman talk about his golf swing and constantly complaining (intentionally loud and beligerently) about the waitress (who palmer's brother would talk intentionally loud and beligerently about fucking).

Twelve dollars a person? That could get very expensive.

yes.
-
Has Mack Brown lost his fucking mind?
-

All the lemonade you can drink.
-
Guys who should touch the ball more: Goodwin, Brown, Monroe, Johnson.
-
Will Gilbert get on the field again this year?
-
Has Mack Brown lost his fucking mind?
I really, seriously, have no idea what is going on here.
-
UTSA got beat, I guess they couldn't stay undefeated for ever. They had over 50,000 for their first game (a record), more than 30,000 today.

Do you know where the stadium is?
-
You need 1 yard against BYU and can't get it? They really need to concentrate on O line recruiting.
-
Do you know where the stadium is?
Alamodome.

Most of the time they'd make that, but sometimes the defense wins those too.
-
I think the offense, sans Gilbert, looks promising as they seem to execute pretty well. However, I don't know shit about football.
-
There's a new Shipley too?
-
Alamodome.
It's nice that somebody is playing football there.
-
There's a new Shipley too?
Yes. You have to like the "McCoy to Shipley" call.

execute like in the public hanging sense?

Probably not.

Probably not.
Ash and McCoy seem much more productive.

Like night and day. If it was anyone but Mack, one could assume one of the QB questions was answered. Namely, Gilbert is done.

I'm probably in the minority, but Gilbert is the only guy who looks like a real QB to me. I know he makes stupid throws, but he's got serious skills. You can't give up on him at the beginning of his second year as starter.

Can we give up on him after 15 games? Yes? Good. Help him fill out the transfer paperwork. Enjoy Northwestern State, GG.

I've watched very little UT football over the last few years, so I admit I know as much as I sound like I know. Gilbert looks like a first round draft pick. Yes, I know Chris Simms did as well. Either way, kids are in bed and I'm just killing time until the kickass Strikeforce card in an hour.
-

The same could have been said about Jevan Sneed. I thought it would come a lot easier to Gilbert, but it's not. And the difference is becoming apparent.

Yep. I don't know what the problem is or whether it can be fixed, but Gilbert simply doesn't produce. He looked like Peyton Fucking Manning in high school, but something has happened.

He had a fetus for a head?

Having not watched a second of him in HS, I can't tell you how impossible that is to believe considering his terrible mechanics, weak long tosses, and total inability to figure out which team to throw to.
-
holy crap! genuine offensive creativity. rest assured, mack brown will have his ass after the game
-

That's why it's so baffling. But he looks like a middle-schooler out there now. Go figure.

You are clinically insane.

They can only bring one wife to the game.

every singe person who booed Gilbert last night is a no class fucking loser. i was furious and embarrassed, and it cheapened a great, great win for the team.

Last night should be Garrett Gilbert's last start at Texas. He may "look" like a QB to you, but looks can be deceiving. In 15 starts, he often helped out the opposing team far more than his very own.

fuck this.

I'm in favor of moving forward.d with McCoy and/or Ash, but agree with Jim 100% that anyone that booed Gilbert (all 75,000 ofthem) are low-class pieces of shit.

I don't know what happened to him over the course of a year but he looked good against Bama in the BCS game. And that was against 8 guys drafted in the NFL, most in the 1st round, and will soon be 10 as 2 of them are still on the team and are projected as 1st or 2nd rounders. I don't follow Texas very closely but he had a white guy that night, can't remember his name, that none of those NFLers could cover or seemingly catch and what looked to be a great OL and a decent running game. Does he still have those or comparable weapons and still screwing it up or has the rest of the team regressed with the QB taking most of the blame?
-

Texas has had top 3-5 recruiting classes for the last umpteen years. They are dripping with top flight talent at every position.

You enjoyed writing this.
JC, I don't know what happened last year. It was obviously way more than a quarterback.
After the first quarter or so, they looked like a team that will compete. Gilbert just didn't play well, it wasn't the players around him.
-
every singe person who booed Gilbert last night is a no class fucking loser. i was furious and embarrassed, and it cheapened a great, great win for the team.
And to all the people that claim to have been booing Mack, not GG: bullshit.
I'm glad to see McCoy and Ash get a shot, but I have no ill will towards GG; I think the coaching staff did him a terrible disservice last year, and I put his shortcomings at their feet.

Leave it to the Aggies to point out how highly rated recruiting classes can founder.

Agree with this 100%. It was really embarassing. On the bright side it was loud in the 4th quarter when it needed to be.

I know most of you probably aren't fans of barking Carnival, but I wholeheartedly agreed with Scipio Tex's post today re: Gilbert:
Gilbert tried his best. And seems like a good guy. If you can point to lack of effort anywhere in Gilbert’s game, I’m happy to concede. Not lack of performance. That’s clear enough. Lack of effort. I’m not aware of any off-field issues either. So when a good citizen tries his hardest and doesn’t pan, he’s an object of personal scorn? Really?
I don’t mean a choice curse word after an interception, an expression of desire for another signal caller, or a detailing of his deficiencies. I’m talking about the hyper-personal garbage we’ve all seen or heard.
Newsflash: Garrett Gilbert plays for Texas.
He’s OUR guy as a member of the team, even if he’s not your guy or my guy at starting QB.
You either get that at some fundamental level or you don’t. And if you don’t, I can only speculate on the cause. Maybe you’re a jerk. Maybe you revel in the failure of others in all aspects of life. Maybe you don’t know any better. Maybe the commercialization of college football and absurd ticket prices have created a professional mindset in fans. Maybe you like attention, whatever its form. Maybe it’s exciting to boo.
Except that is all trumped by this: The Longhorns are our team. Our players – at least the ones who conduct themselves with class on and off of the field and play their hardest every Saturday – are our guys.
If you’re one of the people booing him, luxuriating in Gilbert’s failures, or writing personal attacks, this isn’t the place for you. We generally give people all the rope necessary to hang themselves and our moderating touch is light, mostly because our readership is smarter than the average bear. At some level, stupidity is self-evident and is its own caution to others.
But QB controversies have an amazing attractive ability. It’s emotional flypaper. Idiots emit some sort of clustering beacon to attract others where they try to find some collective purchase like viruses trying to take over their host. Then it becomes a game of one-upmanship for who can top the others for shock, hatred, and cowardice. Thankfully, that number has been small here, but it’s not going to spread.
The nasty stuff - I mean, the really hateful, personal vitriol - that gets posted on message boards drives me crazy.

According to the rankings of those particular years, yes they were, including the top linemen in the state, year after year.

And this is what I'm saying. Aggie recruiting "rankings" were high too. The rankings aren't especially indicative, especially if your coaches don't coach them effectively.
I maintain that Searles was the most important hire Brown made.

McCoy and Ash co-starters.

A&M ALWAYS gets third pick on talent in Texas. Any recent success is because A&M has started getting second pick on a few guys (mainly because OU has taken small classes). Our coaches are...a work in progress.
-
McCoy and Ash co-starters.
I don't know much, granted, but what's the benefit of that? Ash looked better to me in most facets. I'll hang up and listen.

Just not true.
Example one: Jake Matthews chose A&M over UT. His dad watched our practices and basically said that there was no way in hell he was letting his kid get "coached" like that.

Ash is the definite long-term guy, but I don't know how much better Case has mastered the offense right now.

Isolated case. Our other tackle, you guys didn't want. The rest of our O-line recruits didn't even have offers from Texas. In fact, outside of Matthews, I don't think Mack has offered a single player currently on scholarship for A&M.

I just hope that McCoy and Shipley haven't gone in on a bass boat together.

I kept waiting for the Bengals to play Shipley at safety for a guaranteed interception.

That's kind of a technicality. MB holds offers until he's certain they'll be accepted.
-

They are roommates.

I'll give you UT boys something to fire away at...
Texas needs GG to win the Big XXII. There you go. The other two are absolutely serviceable, Ash being better than McCoy, but they need GG at his best to get where they want to go. He has not looked good thus far, but he has the highest ceiling of anyone on the roster. Can you guys really see Ash or McCoy beating OU? Not sure how Texas coaches will get him turned around, but that is my .02 (probably worth about that much)
-

That guy who follows Texas recruiting...Ketchum, I think, seems to be pretty adamant that no one on last years A&M roster had an offer or interest or could play for Texas. And he's an expert.

This isn't high school anymore. Ash has the most upside of the three. Be interesting to see where he stacks up against Brewer next year.

his talent. Ash will be the guy next year, but he will not be totally ready until then, imo.

nothing at all, that is why my .02 is worth about that much. He has had some bright spots, against good teams, and I cannot get myself to disregard his HS record. He just looks like a high profile QB. Ash looks the part as well, although I would take an experienced GG over Ash right now. McCoy should not even be in the conversation, IMO. Maybe GG's experience is working against him...or he has lost the locker room. Who knows...

If you believe a lot of what Shuttlesworth writes over at Recruitocosm, Gilbert HAS lost the team. According to his insider, they rallied around Ash during fall camp.

The team he inherited last year had a poor offensive line, no running game, no tight ends to speak of, and no proven wide receivers. He didn't have a good sophomore year, but there were a lot of problems with the team last season. Greg Davis did him no favors, either.
That said, at some point, he has to produce on the field. He struggled to consistently do that.

Gilbert got replaced because he makes too many poor decisions with the football. His second interception vs BYU is a perfect example. He forced a deep ball to Mike Davis into the teeth of double coverage. It was a low percentage pass that someone with his experience should know not to throw.

Chuy Sanchez was the best QB I ever saw in Jr High and I went to two games.
I don't understand why he's not starting at UT this weekend.
Fuck you guys.

He would've, but he should've laid off huffing the paint, ese.

Because when you huff you don't care which color anybody is wearing and when you play with the big boys, they like that shit nice and neat. It's not my fault Krylon took him away dude.
You know how touchy Mack gets, man. Ain't never gonna be no Aztlan QB at UT.

i know college football doesn't have the complex presnap reads and route options that pro offenses have, but you still gotta wonder about the coaching gilbert's received in his 2+ years on campus. most of the mistakes outlined here seem easily avoidable with basic coaching.

i believed that he has been coached down, but he obviously gets rattled also. i think he puts so much pressure on himself to turn the fans' opinions around, that the pressure overrides what he has been taught to do in his football programs. much of it is stress/mental, imo.
-
I agree that it is mental stress issue, not a physical tools issue. I think him being part of a rotation in the short term, is the best way to resolve who should warrant the lion's share of snaps in the long term.
-

The complexity from last year to this year has increased significantly, and Gilbert seems to lag as a distant third in really getting a handle on it. At this stage I don't think we can blame "poor coaching" for his deficiencies. And to be honest, inability to develop quarterbacks was not Greg Davis' major woe.
-

Disagree. IMO, the spring and the first six quarters of this season resolved who should warrant the lion's share, and that individual is not Garrett Gilbert. He may yet get another chance, should the McCoy/Ash rotation falter, but his performance has warranted the depth chart change.
RE: physical tools... He has a cannon, but also a slow release and poor touch.

Supposedly it's OU, OSU, Tech and Texas to the PAC-12 and it'll be four pods, nine conference games. The LHN is essentially untouched if it makes more than 1/16th of the PAC-12's third tier rights. Not a done deal yet though.
Also some rumblings of Notre Dame wanting to go B1G with Texas, but not much else about that.

I'm hoping that the partnership/rev-share aspect of this would drive some more palatable start times. PAC is going to want to have financial interest in Texas watching its games. I'm assuming that's not the case with pro sports

If we could buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you think you're worth SnS could outbid Crane and keep the Astros in the AL. You add nothing to this site, and the character you play is more tiresome than Frieda. In short, you're a petty caricature of every wannabe Internet celebrity out there, and the fact that you regularly out-do the Shaggy/Orangebloods/HornFans crowd in the category is your only impressive accomplishment.
But hey, you got me, chief.

And you are a total pussy. Pussy pussy pussy.
Worthless pussy. Witless pussy. Tiresome pussy.
Yawn.
-
Very funny. Aren't you about ready to go back into retirement?
If we could buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you think you're worth SnS could outbid Crane and keep the Astros in the AL. Fuck me. Yeah, I should re-read my rants before hitting Post. That was the only thing I take back.
-
Sounds like someone's got a case of the Mondays.
-
Maybe I'm just down from Man City blowing that 2-0 lead.
Anyway... I don't really think the late start issue is such a big deal. In the pod system Texas will play three road games to west coast venues. The higher-caliber games aren't going to be relegated to the late-late slot. My guess is that Texas plays a 9pm game once or twice per season. If that's cause for complaint then I think you're just looking for a reason to be contrary.
-
Watch out now, one of the relatively anonymous posters who otherwise brings almost nothing to the site may call you a pussy.
actually, i have seen him many times. he exists and is a good guy.

Tech/UT split on the LHN?
-
The Chronicle article, which referenced an AAS article, stated:
But according to the American-Statesman report, the deal currently being negotiated would allow UT to keep the Longhorn Network if it adds Pac-12 programming to its schedule. The report said UT would keep all its LHN revenue if it is greater than one-sixteenth of the Pac-12's third-tier media rights, and if it was less, all revenue would be divided evenly.
-
Tech/UT split on the LHN?
i would be beyond shocked.
ETA: the AAS is reporting this, but i'll watch and listen.
-
i would be beyond shocked.
Good. Thanks.

In actual football news:
Chip Brown reporting that Gilbert is undergoing shoulder surgery and is out for the season.
-
Says he injured his shoulder against Rice. I don't remember hearing anything about that.
-
And now the Big 12 is merging with the Big East.

It certainly casts the move to pull him in a new light.

I'm not crazy about a quarterback tandem nor do I care for the Wildcat or Wildhorn or whatever it is.
The Red Zone futility is definitely getting me in the mood for the Texans game tomorrow though.

Sure doesn't feel like a 20 point lead.

The management has the Florida - Alabama game on at your sports bar, yes? That was a fairly entertaining beginning.

Gus Johnson; good for college basketball, horrific for football. This broadcasting team is terrible.
-

No, we had the baseball games on. What happened?
-
I seriously don't know what to make of this game. This is the least satisfying 27 pt lead I can remember.
-

Florida came out and immediately threw a long TD pass.

I liked his NFL work, but he's really off tonight

Hard to say a team should be up by 40 at the half... but they should be up by 40 at the half.
-

I didn't know he did NFL. Maybe it's Davis that brings out this side of him. It's almost like they're not even watching the game.

Wow.

49.

So that was awesome.

34 ain't bad.

I sure hope the voters aren't watching and just see the score.

Not so impressed with the D.
-

He was CBS's C or D team, so we saw a bit of him on the Texans games. His emotion sets him apart, but he can't that alone carry him. He seems very unprepared tonight.

Goddamn.

We lost to this team. In Austin.

Wait; they got to count wins from last year in this year's total?
Can we use 2005 wins?
-
This is funny
I know they haven't scored and I can't really see it, but I'm leery of a defense that gets gashed on blitzes by design. Better teams turn that shit into points.
-
Florida came out and immediately threw a long TD pass.
10-3 Fla but Bama is in the red zone.
-
We lost to this team. In Austin.
The word lost doesn't quite capture it.
-
After last season, I'll happily take a 4-0 start heading into OU week. This is a young team that has a lot of room to grow.
-
Can't wait til tomorrow.
It's 12:52pm, and...
-
OU SUCKS!
-
TEXAS!
-
What the fuck was the O-line doing there? How can you just stand there and look at a ball on the ground?
-
Blake Gideon may bring some good things to this defense, but pass coverage isn't one of them.
-
Well that was a slaughter.
-
I can't believe OU could hang over 50 on us.
This defense can't stop anybody.
Mack can't win the big one.
And what on earth is the University of Texas doing playing a freshman at QB, anyway?
2003, or 2011? You make the call.
-
not ready for prime time. my worst case scenario prediction was 45-10.
-
TCU to the Big 12 today.

Oh great! Matt Millen and Marty Brennaman's son... Thom.

Only 11 points behind at half. Moral victory!

And there's the Statue of Liberty. Wow!

There are a lot of things about this team to be disappointed with but Malcolm Brown is a lot of fun to watch.

If this team has to have an MVP I think Foswhitt is it at this point of the season.

Other than the DE play, I can't think of any. They are what I thought they would be: young, learning, and inferior in talent to OU and OSU.

So tonight's game is pretty much blacked out in Houston, right? Anybody know of a way to watch it?

I finally gave in and unmuted your game and whaddaya know Musburger said something profoundly stupid literally within thirty seconds. Stupid enough to have me shouting at full volume at a television set. Either he needs to go or I need some help.

I don't understand why those choices are mutually exclusive.

My friends border between wild laughter and staring in horror while watching football with me. The cavalcade of idiot announcers that the sports networks trot out is about 99 percent dog shit. Brent Musburger is at the very top of the awful list. Retire, Milo Brent!

Milo Hamilton is fucking Albert Einstein compared with that fuckwit. Milo knows baseball, he's just an egomaniac who's 98 years old. If I happen by some odd chance or miracle of medicine to make it as long as Milo I will certainly be a permanently disoriented egomaniac, too, so I can scarcely fault him.
Musburger is a fucking idiot. He understands so little of what he sees on the football field it is simply astonishing. I would love to meet his bosses. What a bunch of hollow entertainment business dickwits they must be. They have no fucking idea that he's an idiot. I'm sure they think he's great.

Several years ago I heard him call a basketball game, I think it was a college game, on the radio. He was terrific, had a great knowledge and feel for the game but could call it, play by play, keep track of the movement and passes, and made it interesting as hell. After that, I always wondered if that was his true specialty and the rest of it was built on that proficiency but I have no idea. He's become an awful caricature of the competent broadcaster he once was.

I know you're not crazy about football but do you ever listen to him call football games? He literally does not know what he is watching.

I'm not sure what he's worse at, baseball or football. He works so hard at being upbeat and filling air with his presence. I don't know if it's just words to him, sound without much thought or meaning or if he's straining but yeah, I've heard him do football. Excruciating.

This is what he does. Something will happen and he'll shout LEMME TELL YA WHAT JUST HAPPENED, FOKES! and then he proceeds to describe something that is completely unrelated to what's just transpired and when the replay shows conclusively that he has no fucking idea what he's talking about and when Herbstreit gently tries to shepherd him back in the general direction of reality he shouts WELL, FOKES, WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IS!... and then he acts like he's the first one on earth to figure it all out. He does that fucking ten times a game. I mean, what the fuck is he doing when the game is taking place? What is he watching?
I'd like to sit next to him on a plane. I'd luxuriate in the three hours to tell him what a fucking douchecicle he is. Of course what would end up happening is he'd shout OK FOKES THE STEWARDESS IS BRINGING US OUR LUNCH! and then the row in front of us would squirm around to see who the idiot is and then he'd shout IT'S NOT LUNCH FOKES IT'S DRINKS! and I'd be like, Yeah, when she showed up with a tray with cups of water and orange juice rather than a fucking cart with sandwiches that was my first solid clue. IT LOOKED LIKE LUNCH AT FIRST FOKES BUT IT WAS HARD TO TELL FROM THAT INITIAL ANGLE!

i think you are exactly right. he is intent on being the Personality he thinks he is. the game is a faint afterthought to The Brent.

Damn, what a great half.

If you outrush your opponent like that you're going to win a lot of games. I think most experts will agree.
Am I crazy or did I just see ABC give the Texas score as 38-35 in favor of Texas? Did anyone else see that?

Yep. I figured it was just another UT hater pulling a prank. The crawl was frozen too, it held on that score for several minutes.

That was the score of the WVU (who is next in the Top 25 after TX that was playing) game. If the crawl was frozen, there was probably a snafu in switching from one score to the next.
-
Rugby punt from your own end zone. That is some serious brain power in action.
-
Ash and McCoy seem completely lost. They'll probably improve somewhat as they get older, but I'm not seeing the spark that makes me think either will ever be the answer.
-
Harsin's playcalling in the 2nd half leaves me completely befuddled. It's like a 10 year old playing Madden.
-
Conceded the game with 3:30 left. Absolutely disgusting.

Baylor is embarrassing the shit out themselves today.

Thankfully, they woke up just in time and squeaked it out.

Great night for UT tonight in the Under Armour All-America Game: Connor Brewer left with a concussion, and Jonathan Gray just went down holding his knee and then hopped off the field. I guess the football gods have run out of targets on the Texans.

According to Jonathan Gray's father, it was just a minor ankle sprain. (Tweeted to Hook 'Em.com)
