Am I correct in my assessment of the pros and cons of calling up a pitching prospect before he's ready:
CONS:
-stunts his development by forcing the young pitcher to rely only on the skills he first mastered and feels comfortable with (i.e. that one pitch that befuddled guys in the low minors)
-can lead to bad habits if the young pitcher has to overcompensate to hide his deficiencies and/or to deal with situations he might not be ready for (pitching with runners on, late into games, etc.)
-can expose the young pitcher to arm injuries by bringing him up before he's mastered his mechanics, and he might be prone to 'overpitch' in order to secure his spot in the majors, and/or not report minor arm trouble in an effort to keep his spot
-can kill the confidence of a young pitcher if he struggles too much and gets sent down
PROS:
-the pitcher has the opportunity to learn against top competition, especially if he has the right make-up to deal with the inevitable ups and downs
-the pitcher is exposed to mlb coaching, which, in theory, is better than what he gets in the minors
-the pitcher can receive valuable 'side coaching' from veteran teammates
-the notion argued by some that modern prospects are too babied in the minors, and so a talented player (especially a pitcher) should have the opportunity to take the training wheels off and really compete before these modern player development systems can finish sewing on his vagina

Just checked the roster to see what number they gave him, nothing yet. But I did notice he was born Oct 19, 1990. Wow I feel old. I assume he is the first child of the 90's to wear an Astros uniform in an MLB game.

Correct. I feel old, too. He's the first Astro who was born after I was.

This is surprising. When they sent him down to start the season, and didn't bring hm up for Figgy's spot, I just assumed September. Looking forward to seeing him though.

It's not surprising to me. Lyles was always the next guy to get called up when he was needed. Figuerora was the first option, then Aneury, then Lyles. It seemed to me that was the plan going in. It was just a matter of when he was needed, not whether he would be.

And people think I'M the whippersnapper around here.

Yeah, this makes me feel old.

I have older children.
Coach probably has older grandchildren, though Mark may not be sure.

Me, too. I now share a birthday with 2/5 of the starting rotation, though (Lyles, Happ).

Quick Lyles scouting report from John Sickels (http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/5/31/2198011/prospect-of-the-day-jordan-lyles-rhp-houston-astros)

Lyles doesn't have exceptional velocity, working at 89-93 MPH. However, the fastball works well due to the contrast with his slider and changeup, both of which are excellent. His command is very sharp, and his strong overall level of athleticism helps him repeat his mechanics and stay healthy.
A pitcher! Nice.

I just realized that I'm anticipating tonight's game more than any since opening day.

Per Steve Campbell (via Twitter):
Astros GM Ed Wade said that based on Wandy Rodriguez's elbow tenderness, Jordan Lyles likely will get a third start next week at home.
