I know many of you are history buffs, fans of the series, or simply patriotic so I wanted to share something as soon as I read it. Sadly, Dick Winters has passed. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110110/ap_on_re_us/us_obit_winters
What an incredible individual.

He lived a great life. RIP.
Also, I never understood why Damien Lewis didn't become more of an acting success. He was terrific in that role.

He's British...and ginger. Having said that, he's not been idle (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0507073/).

BoB to Dreamcatcher is about as far a drop-off in quality as you will ever find on an IMDB page.

I liked "Life" but NBC jacked around that schedule, postponing it for what seemed like 6 months, at one point. Dreamcatcher, like all Stephen King movies, is more miss than hit. Having read quite a bit of Stephen King when I was younger, the screenplays rarely capture the action of the book. It comes across as cheesey and formulaic. On the other hand, when it works, it's awesome. Examples of good King movies are Stand By Me and The Green Mile. Some of his earlier movies are so bad, I think, they have become cult classics. Unfortunately Dreamcatcher was just plain bad.

The movie had no prayer, because the book made me actively embarrassed for King. I can't believe he actually published that shit.

...until they make the first Jack Sutherford movie.

Other than The Green Mile, I haven't read any King since I read IT in the 7th grade. Needless to say, I did pick up a couple king books, read a few pages, and put them down. He's gone a bit beyond predictable.

His short stories and novellas are still going strong. And I didn't find Under the Dome to be predictable at all.

Ahem...four words: Shawshank...Shining.

Agreed. I was thinking Maximum Overdrive, maybe Carrie and Christine. It's hard to categorize Carrie and Christine given the movies of the same era, but I think they definitely can be described as cult classics.

Didn't Stephen King hate Kubrick's version of the Shining and throw his weight behind that terrible TV version with the dude from Wings (no, not that guy, the other one)

I'm not a fan of the movie but it definitely captured the creepiness of the book. There's something about the actress playing the wife that bugs me.
There was a TV version? Is that like the Dead Zone series with Anthony Michael Hall?

how did a tribute to Dick Winters take this turn?

"My grandson once asked me: Grandpa, were you a hero in the War? "Hero? No, I wasn't a hero. But I served with many of them". RIP Major Winters.

I've been tackling the Dark Tower (on #3 now). I know it's not typical King, but it's great reading.

I've read each of the books multiple times.
The Dark Tower series is amazing, but the end sucks.
